CHAPTER 46

The small, twin-engine plane landed smoothly on the tarmac of the Season County airfield. The flight had been uneventful for the Hardys. The only outward sign of Joe Hardy’s aversion to flying was the tight grip he had on his brother’s arm during the take-off and landing.

Before boarding the plane in Green River several hours earlier, Mr. Hardy gave Sheriff Colt Tanner all of their personal identification. Fenton, Frank and Joe now carried a driver’s license, Social Security card and a few credit cards, all were bearing the sur-name of Fredricks. Tanner planned to keep their real identification in the safe in his private office until the Hardys returned.

Tanner wished them well, and then headed home to Torrey. About halfway back to the small Wyoming town, Tanner realized he’d forgotten to tell the Hardys two important pieces of information. Cursing his forgetfulness, Tanner realized there was nothing he could do about it. ‘They’ll find out soon enough,’ Tanner thought.

Once aboard the small plane, Frank immediately set about the task of keeping Joe’s mind occupied on anything but flying. Already "in character", Frank discussed the case with Joe using sign language. This gave them both an opportunity to practice the deaf language before arriving in Colorado.

Fenton Hardy was seated across the aisle from his two sons. As he watched them, he was filled with pride. He felt great admiration for them both. They were doing so well at playing their roles, no one watching would suspect that Joe wasn’t really deaf.

During their previous trip to Wyoming, Fenton had gained a great deal of respect for his younger son. Joe’s usually carefree attitude and impetuous nature had falsely lured Fenton into believing that Joe was immature and irresponsible. Joe had proved otherwise when he took on the responsibility of their rescue single-handedly, after their plane crash.

Mr. Hardy watched now as those strong character traits came forth from Joe again to overcome his fear of flying. The young man’s determination to help the Whitefeathers had caused Joe to face his fear and do what needed to be done.

Fenton glanced at Frank and smiled. Always so patient and protective of his younger brother, Frank had an old soul. He’d always seemed mature beyond his years. Keeping true to his nature, Frank was now working hard to help keep Joe distracted, yet letting Joe know he was there for him without making Joe feel weak or foolish.

Joe Hardy had concentrated hard to stay in character at the busy Green River airport. He had focused on ‘not hearing’ and allowed Frank to interpret for him when necessary. He’d silently practiced lip-reading by watching other people waiting for their flights. When he spoke, he used the same slurred and guttural tones that Eric Meyer had used when speaking.

Now, three hours later in the small Colorado airport, the Hardy brothers made their way to the baggage claim area, while Mr. Hardy headed for the car rental office. Half an hour later, they all met at the front door of the building.

"Well gentlemen," Mr. Hardy smiled at his approaching sons, "I’ve secured a Jeep Grand Cherokee for us while we’re here."

"Wow!" Joe exclaimed, seeing the shiny black jeep parked in front of the terminal, "Too bad I won’t get a chance to drive this baby!" It had been decided that Joe shouldn’t be seen driving, because of his cover as a non-hearing person. Mr. Hardy feared that Joe’s natural driving reflexes might blow his cover.

Joe and Frank placed their luggage in the rear of the jeep. Fenton handed the keys to Frank, and then climbed in the backseat by himself. Joe grinned and jumped in the front passenger seat, turning around to give his dad a bright smile of thanks. Joe might not be able to drive the jeep, but at least he could ride up front! Frank climbed into the driver’s seat and gave Joe a thumbs-up, before putting the 4x4 into gear. Soon they were headed toward the town of Silverthorne, Colorado.

"I’m starving!" stated raven haired Heather Kai as she opened the door of the newspaper office.

"You’re always starving!" retorted Hannah, her younger sister.

"That’s quite enough," Cindy Kai said, following her three daughters out the door. She knew the girls loved each other, but Heather and Hannah loved to torment each other as well.

Heather and Hannah led the way down the sidewalk toward Becky’s Diner, while Cindy and her oldest daughter, Sarah followed close behind. The quartet were headed for lunch and wanted to beat the crowd that would soon fill the diner.

Cindy looked up as they neared the diner and saw a black Grand Cherokee pulling in to the parking spot right in front. She immediately recognized the three men emerging from the vehicle and she knew why they were in Silverthorne.

Fenton and Frank walked into the diner, but Joe, noticing a woman and three girls headed for the diner also, held the door open for them. Joe smiled politely as the females entered the diner, getting quite a stare from the two younger girls.

Heather and Hannah both gazed at the blue-eyed, blond boy, who held the door for them, while Sarah, embarrassed by their behavior, quickly pushed them inside.

Cindy smiled at her daughters’ reaction to the handsome young man. She looked into Joe Hardy’s blue eyes as she walked past him and paused.

"Hello Mr. Hardy," she said with a smile, "Thank you for holding the door and, by the way, welcome to Silverthorne."
