Travis Wagner pulled his white Cadillac up to the front steps of his Georgian-style home. The 12-room mansion was a white stone structure with a marble porch. The three story marble pillars that graced the porch made it look like a southern plantation house, not a Colorado ranch homestead.
The 54-year-old rancher didn’t stop to admire the splendor of his house. He stomped through the entrance and went immediately to his study, closing the door loudly behind him. He went right to his oak desk and sat down. Wagner pulled a flask from the bottom drawer and took a deep gulp of the fiery liquid. After his second swallow, Travis Wagner nervously wiped the perspiration from his fallowed brow.
He needed to find out what was going on between his son and Sheriff Williams. The rancher had seen the sheriff at Becky’s Diner earlier that morning and had joined the man for breakfast. The conversation they’d had over their eggs, grits and sausage had centered on a subject that both had worked hard to bury. Now Wagner was feeling very unsettled.
Wagner picked up the intercom phone and called out to the stable.

Joe Hardy stood frozen, holding the door of the diner open. His mind was racing with questions: ‘Who was this woman? How did she know him? Would she blow his cover before the investigation even got started?’ He needed to talk to his father and brother quick!
Frank Hardy had followed his dad into the restaurant, assuming that his younger brother was right behind him. When he turned to ask Joe what he was hungry for, Frank became instantly alarmed, not seeing Joe at first. Then the 18-year-old saw his brother still at the door, holding it open for three attractive, dark-haired girls and a woman with lighter hair. Frank chuckled to himself, ‘Leave it to Joe to find some pretty girls as soon as we get here!’
Frank’s grin turned to a frown as he saw the woman speak to Joe. Joe’s demeanor changed suddenly and alarms went off in Frank’s head. He tugged on his father’s sleeve and nodded in Joe’s direction.
Fenton Hardy turned at Frank’s urging and noticed his younger son coming toward them. Joe’s face was pale and his eyes were wide and anxious looking.
Joe hurried toward his father and brother, not daring to even look to where the woman and the three girls were standing.
"What’s wrong?" Frank signed, peering into Joe’s sapphire eyes, "You look like you’ve seen a ghost!"
Joe signed back, "That woman knew our name! She called me ‘Mr. Hardy.’"
Frank quickly told his father what Joe had just said. Fenton gazed at the woman and her brown eyes locked onto his.
Cindy Kai smiled at the eldest Hardy man, but his returning glare made her smile fade. She couldn’t understand his seemingly hostile attitude.
‘I wonder where my brother ever got the impression that Mr. Hardy was such a nice man,’ Cindy thought, ‘If looks could kill, I’d probably be dead!’

Ryan Wagner left the stable in a huff. His father had called looking for him and needed to see him immediately. Ryan had been planning to ride his horse and didn’t like the interruption.
Tad Creet had taken the call from the senior Wagner and now a rare smile creased the old Indian’s face as he watched young Wagner head for the house.
"In here Ryan," a voice bellowed from Mr. Wagner’s study as Ryan entered the house. The younger man walked into the study and closed the door.
"Talk, boy!" growled Travis Wagner, staring at his only son.
"Wait a minute, Daddy," the younger man started, "You’re gettin’ yourself all worked up over nothin’. The problem’s all gone!"
"That’s exactly what I’m talking about!" shouted the older man, "Did you kill that cop?"
"Now Daddy..." Ryan began again.
"How could you be so stupid?" Travis shouted, "Especially with Colt Tanner asking so many questions lately!"
"It’s self-preservation, Daddy," the young man smiled, "I guess I’m turnin’ out to be just like you!"

As soon as Cindy Kai and her girls left the diner, Fenton Hardy sprang into action. Whispering his plans to Frank, the detective slipped out the door casually, planning to follow the woman and the three girls.
Pausing outside, Mr. Hardy watched the quartet move briskly down the sidewalk. He planned to give them a head start before pursuing after them. Fenton was surprised when the four-some entered a storefront just a few doors down from the diner.
Mr. Hardy moved across the street and strolled down the walk, glancing toward the storefronts on the opposite side. Guessing about where the woman had entered, Fenton stopped in front of a hobby store and pretended to browse at the model cars in the window. In the reflection on the glass window, he noted that the building across the road was the newspaper office. He could see the woman and the three girls working inside.
Fenton
Hardy decided a direct confrontation was in order before this
newspaperwoman blew their cover completely.
