Fenton Hardy strode purposefully into the newspaper office. When the tinny bell above the door jingled to life, Cindy Kai called out that she’d be right there.
She glanced up and stopped as she met a glare from detective Fenton Hardy. Gathering her wits, she walked up to the counter and smiled.
"Good afternoon," she said sweetly, "How may I help you...Mr. Fredricks, isn’t it?"
Fenton was momentarily stunned. Hadn’t Joe said she used their real name? But she just addressed him as Fredricks. The man was puzzled but expertly hid his turmoil.
"Miss...?" Mr. Hardy addressed the woman.
"Mrs. Kai. Cindy Kai." she answered.
"Mrs. Cindy Kai," Mr. Hardy said, "I would like to speak with you about a very important matter," but then, glancing at the three girls he added, "alone. It’s personal."
Cindy wasn’t thrilled about the prospect of being alone with this hostile man, but she nodded and let him come behind the counter. She led him to the office in the back of the room, admonishing her girls to ‘keep the presses rolling.’
"I don’t know how you know us, Mrs. Kai," Fenton began immediately upon the door to the office being closed, "My sons and I are new to the area. We’re just settling in, yet you’ve seemed to frighten the wits out of my son the first time you’ve met him."
"I’m sorry," Cindy replied frowning, "I probably shouldn’t have used your real name. I know you’re undercover."
"What?" Fenton asked, feigning ignorance, "I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m a recent widower and I’ve moved my sons here for a new start, not..."
"Oh no!" Cindy Kai interrupted; her brown eyes wide as realization dawned on her, "That stupid, air-head! Oh, he is so, so...he must have blond roots under his stupid hat!" She turned away from Mr. Hardy and picked up a picture that sat on the corner of her desk.
"I’m so sorry," she repeated, handing the picture to Fenton, "He obviously forgot to tell you."
Fenton looked closely at the picture. The three girls were the some young ladies that were working in the other room. But it was the man in the picture that caught Mr. Hardy’s attention. Colt Tanner’s ruggedly handsome face was smiling up at him.
"My name is Cindy Tanner Kai," the tall brunette stated, "Colt is my big brother. My big brainless brother by the sounds of it! He called me yesterday. He decided that I should know who you really are and why you and your boys are here. He was afraid I might recognize you all from newspaper pictures or something."
"You’re Tanner’s sister?" the detective said, mildly shocked by the information, "No, he never told us about you."
"Oh, poor Joe!" Cindy cried, remembering the shocked expression on the youth’s face after she greeted him, "He’s probably worried sick that I’ll blow your whole operation! How stupid of me! I have no right to call my brother brainless!"

Joe Hardy was nervous and signed to Frank that he wanted to look for their dad. Frank replied that they needed to wait a bit more. Frank was trying to clearly picture the woman again. Something about her seemed familiar, but he couldn’t quite place it.
Finally, not able to keep Joe calm any longer, Frank paid for their lunch and the pair left the diner. They were about to enter the jeep when Frank saw his father exit a building a few doors away and walk toward them.
Fenton saw the boys and broke into a jog, seeing how anxious they both were. Before they could get in the jeep, Fenton filled the boys in on Colt Tanner’s sister and nieces.

Homer Chotto had holed up in an abandoned shack several miles away from the machine barn where he discovered the remains of Collin Anderson. The sight of the deputy’s mutilated corpse had left Homer physically ill.
Homer had realized right away that the mangled body was a cop; a white Stetson bearing a deputy emblem on the front had been hooked on one of the blades of the thresher.
The old man knew he should report the body to the sheriff, but Homer Chotto didn’t like the man. He always had a bad feeling about Sheriff Marcus Williams and he didn’t trust him at all.
‘A crooked cop if I ever saw one,’ the old man said under his breath, as he made his way outside into the early summer sunshine. He headed toward Silverthorne, undecided as to what to say or do about the dead cop.

Back in Wyoming, Colt Tanner had a bad feeling about Collin Anderson. The deputy hadn’t called him back after their last conversation. Colt wondered if Sheriff Williams had found out about the information Anderson had passed along to him.
"If he found out, Anderson might be in big trouble," Tanner said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Maybe I ought to take a few days and visit my sister. If Anderson was discovered, the Hardys may need some back up, too."
A
few hours later, Sheriff Colt Tanner was on a plane headed for Denver,
leaving his office in the capable hands of his deputies.
