CHAPTER 46

Deputy Ronnie Benson’s SUV crept silently up Collin Anderson’s driveway. Ronnie was a little surprised that Lucy wasn’t barking like crazy. He hadn’t had the opportunity to check on the dog since the day before yesterday.

As Ronnie and Becky Watson started up the walk, Ronnie froze in his tracks. The door to the house was open and Collin’s SUV wasn’t there.

"Becky," the deputy whispered, "Get back in the truck. If I don’t come out in 20 minutes, you call the sheriff." Becky’s eyes were wide as she gazed at the open door, but she nodded her head and climbed back inside the SUV.

Fenton Hardy glanced at his watch, and seeing it was time to head for the Wagner Ranch, went to the bedroom that Frank and Joe were sharing. He knocked and, receiving no answer, peeked inside. The boys weren’t in their room.

Mr. Hardy glanced outside and saw their rented Cherokee sitting in the driveway. He then noticed a truck bearing a sheriff’s star on the door sitting in Collin Anderson’s driveway.

‘Maybe the boys went to meet our neighbor,’ Mr. Hardy speculated, and went out the door, walking toward the Anderson home.

* * *

Joe Hardy had found the dog food and fed Lucy, just as Frank was returning to the kitchen of Collin Anderson’s house.

"Nothing seems unusual, except that Anderson hasn’t been here for a while," Frank Hardy stated, running his hand through his dark hair. "There is dust everywhere. Also, this guy has pictures of his dog on the mantle. If you loved your dog that much, would you leave it alone without food or water for days?"

Joe had silently listened to Frank, carefully watching his brother’s lips moving at the same time. "So maybe Anderson didn’t leave Lucy alone on purpose."

"But there is no sign of foul play here," Frank continued, remembering to sign this time. "We’d better let Lucy outside for a bit before we have to leave for our meeting at the ranch."

The boys took a few steps toward the door, when it suddenly opened wide. The Hardy boys froze as they peered into the drawn .45 being held on them by a young deputy.

"Freeze!" the officer said, "Get your hands up now!"

* * *

Fenton Hardy was about twenty feet from Anderson’s porch when he heard someone shout, ‘Freeze!’ He shook his head in disbelief, ‘Why do I know this has something to do with my boys?’ He dashed toward the porch, slowing as he took in the sight before him.

"Alright, you both get on your knees," an officer was ordering the boys, "Nice and slow!" Fenton didn’t dare call out, the officer’s gun might go off and hurt his sons.

Just then, a car door slammed and Becky Watson came out of the SUV. She had seen Fenton Hardy coming across the lawn and was afraid the man would try to hurt Ronnie. Then she recognized him. She’d seen this man with two younger men in the diner the previous day. ‘What in the world is goin’ on?’ the woman thought.

Frank and Joe had dropped to their knees and kept their hands laced together on top of their heads. Frank gave Joe a quick look that said, ‘This is your fault!’

"Officer, we can explain," Frank started, looking into the young man’s eyes.

"You’ll have plenty of time to do that at the Sheriff’s Office," Ronnie replied. "Now you," he pointed to Joe, "On your belly and don’t try anything funny!" Joe had watched the man’s mouth carefully, but Ronnie kept moving his gun hand up and down, making it impossible to see what the officer was saying.

Sweat trickled down Joe’s back. If he got on his belly, the deputy would know that he really can hear, but if he didn’t comply with the order, the man might shoot him, thinking Joe was defying him.

"Wait!" Frank shouted, seeing Ronnie taking aim at Joe, "He can’t hear you! He’s deaf!"

"Ronnie!" shouted Becky, hearing Frank’s last outcry, "I think those might be the boys that moved in next door to Collin. The ones Cindy Kai mentioned this morning!"

"She’s right officer," called out Mr. Hardy, "those are my sons in there and I’m sure they have a very good explanation for being in Anderson’s house."

"Who are you?" the confused deputy asked, still keeping an eye on the kneeling boys.

"I’m Fenton Fredricks," Mr. Hardy answered, "And those are my boys, Frank and Joe. We just moved in next door. If you’ll put that gun away, we can sit down and find out exactly what is going on here."

"Alright," Deputy Benson said, "Mr. Fredricks, come on inside and have a seat. You boys sit at the table, too. You got some explainin’ to do!"

Soon the Hardys, Becky Watson and Deputy Benson were sitting around the table in Collin Anderson’s kitchen.
