Lance Mc Intyre put a straw cowboy hat
over his graying hair, and rubbed a finger across his thick, matching
mustache. The man stood about 6’ 3" and had a hard, lean build.
His clear, blue eyes twinkled as he carefully eyed the boys.
"Welcome to the Wagner Ranch, boys," Mr. Mc Intyre grinned, "If you work hard, you’ll have no problems here. Come on now, I’ll show you around and introduce you to Tad and Randy. Before either Hardy boy could comment, Lance was out the door and walking toward the stable. Joe and Frank had to practically run to keep up with the man’s long strides Lance Mc Intyre talked continuously while he walked. With his back to the boys, Frank had to pretend to translate everything the man was saying for Joe, but this was very difficult, trying to sign a conversation and keep up with the fast-moving foreman at the same time. "Wait, please!" Frank finally cried out in exasperation. Joe almost laughed at seeing his usually cool and calm older brother about to explode. Lance Mc Intyre turned expectantly toward the dark-haired youth. "I’m sorry, Mr. Mc Intyre," Frank said, embarrassed by his out burst, "Mr. Wagner didn’t mention it, so you probably don’t know, but my brother is deaf. I’ve been trying to translate all you’ve been saying, but it’s hard to sign and keep up at the same time." Lance chuckled, "My apologies to you both." He looked from one brother to the other, "It’s been a long time since we’ve had someone deaf working here." The man fixed his light blue eyes on Joe’s dark blue ones, "Do you lip read, Joe?" Joe told the man that he did. "Good. I may forget from time to time. Don’t be afraid to remind me, okay?" "Yes, Sir," the blond youth affirmed, "I’m sure we’ll work it out." Mc Intyre smiled brightly. He liked these boys. He gave Joe’s shoulder a quick squeeze and said, "I’ll hold the conversation to a minimum until we get to the stable." Frank smiled. Maybe they had just made a friend on the Wagner Ranch. * * * Sheriff Marcus Williams looked up as Deputy Stu Downing burst into his office. "You better have an awful good reason to come bustin’ into my office like this, Downing!" the sheriff growled. "Homer Chotto," the man panted out, trying to catch his breath, "He’s been at the Hiller Ranch." The sheriff’s face paled. He told Stu to do what ever was necessary. "Look, Marc," the man stared at the sheriff, "I’ve done some pretty risky things for you in the past, but this is gettin’ way out of hand." "Maybe you’d like to end up like Anderson?" the sheriff hoarsely whispered to the officer. Stu Downing swallowed hard, but then turned and left the office. * * * Deputy Ronnie Benson went on his routine patrol, but his mind was far from his job. His gut instinct told him that Collin Anderson was in trouble and that for some odd reason, Sheriff Williams wanted to ignore it. He and his partner for the day, Sammy Reynolds, drove down the main street of town. Ronnie looked up just as they were passing the newspaper office, hoping to get a glimpse of Sarah Kai. "Hey, Sammy," Deputy Benson cried out, "Stop the car here." "What’s up Ronnie?" Reynolds asked, eyeing his partner. "I just wanna check somethin’ out," Ronnie replied, "Why don’t you go get yourself a coffee or somethin’?" Reynolds shrugged and headed for the diner while Ronnie Benson went to the newspaper office. Peering through the glass door, Ronnie could see Cindy Kai talking with a tall cowboy. Ronnie pulled the door opened and walked up to the counter. Cindy Kai and Colt Tanner both turned to see who had come in, when the bell above the door jingled. "Hey Ronnie," greeted Cindy, "How are you? You remember my brother Colt, don’t you?" "Recognized you as we were passin’ by on patrol," Ronnie grinned, shaking Colt Tanner’s hand. "Good to see you again, Sheriff Tanner." The two men chatted awhile, then Ronnie excused himself and went to find his partner. As he walked down the block, he thought, ‘Now that’s quite a coincidence. I know Collin was talkin’ to Tanner ‘bout somethin’ just last week, and now Tanner suddenly comes for a visit and Collin’s gone up and missin’!’ * * * Homer Chotto didn’t know where to
run. He had never been so afraid in his entire life. Deputy Downing had
heard him talking to Miss Becky, he was sure of it. Now, as he ran
through the woods on the edge of town, he had a sinking feeling that
he’d never be going back to Silverthorne again.
