Fenton Hardy pulled in their driveway and parked beside the police SUV. Colt Tanner and Ronnie Benson immediately greeted the Hardys. The group went into the Fredricks home and settled in the living room.
Colt had noticed right away that something was up with the youngest Hardy. He gave Fenton a questioning look. Mr. Hardy nodded and invited everyone to sit down.
Ronnie Benson was nervous. He somehow knew that he was among friends, but what would they expect of him? Why did they want to talk to him?
"Deputy Benson," Mr. Hardy began, "I’m risking the lives of everyone in this room by trusting you. What I’m about to tell you cannot go beyond these walls. If the wrong people gain this information, we may all end up as dead as Homer Chotto."
"You’ve come to the conclusion that Chotto’s death was no accident either, haven’t you Benson?" Colt asked the young deputy.
"Why do you think it wasn’t an accident?" the deputy countered.
"I talked to your friend, Becky this morning," Tanner answered.
"Okay," Benson said, understanding that Becky probably confided in the sheriff about Chotto’s conversation, "Tell me why you’re here Tanner."
"He came to offer his assistance to us," Mr. Hardy stated, "We, my sons and I, are not who you think we are."
"Officer Benson," Colt Tanner smiled, "I’d like you to meet Fenton Hardy and Sons, private detectives extraordinaire!"
Frank and Joe both laughed at Sheriff Tanner’s dramatic introduction. "I don’t think we could ever live up to that!" Frank said with a grin.
"Hardy," Benson smiled as he looked at Fenton, then the boys, "I shoulda’ known, but I’ve never seen you before. I have certainly heard of you all, though."
The group spent several hours discussing the Mc Curdy/ Whitefeather case, Anderson’s disappearance and Chotto’s death. They went over Carl Whitefeather’s list of Wagner employees and Frank and Joe carefully detailed their meeting with Ryan Wagner earlier that day.
"Where do we go from here?" Ronnie asked, gazing at Mr. Hardy.
"Just do your job and avoid drawing any unnecessary attention to yourself," advised Fenton. "Be ready to back us up if we need you."
"And don’t discuss this with anyone," added Tanner.
Benson was about to leave when he peered at Joe Hardy. He’d heard from Becky that the boy was deaf. Benson smiled at the youth, then said, "Joe, you must be the best lip-reader in the world to have kept up with all this conversation tonight."
Joe, momentarily stunned, began smiling as he knew that, while he had been carefully watching each speaker, there was no way he could have followed everyone’s mouth movements. Since Frank hadn’t bothered to sign for him either, Joe realized that Benson now knew that Joe wasn’t really deaf.
"Joe’s not deaf," Fenton said, "but no one needs to know that either. He’s faking it so he can work at Wagner’s ranch."

Becky Watson was beginning to worry. It was after nine, and she hadn’t heard from Ronnie Benson yet. What had Chotto seen at the Hiller Ranch? Was Ronnie all right? She decided to wait another 15 minutes, and then go for help. Becky bit her lower lip. Who should she go to? Who could she trust?
Mr. Fredricks face immediately came to mind. ‘Why?’ the young woman asked herself, ‘because you felt like you could trust him right away. So did Ronnie.’ Becky smiled as she realized she was answering herself. "Think I’ll head out to see Mr. Fredricks." Miss Watson picked up her keys and headed for the back door of the diner, but stopped when the phone on the wall began to ring. * * *
Cindy Kai had just finished cleaning the newspaper presses. Her back was sore and she wanted to go home and soak in a hot bathtub. Sarah had already taken the two younger girls home and the three of them would have their late supper ready when Cindy arrived.
Cindy double-checked the front door, making sure it was locked up tight. She turned off the lights and headed out the back entrance to her car. When she reached the spot in the alley where she always parked, she stared in disbelief. Her car wasn’t there.
"Gr-r-r! Colt Allen Tanner!" she growled, realizing that Colt had probably ‘borrowed’ her car, but neglected to tell her about it. Sighing in frustration, she headed back toward the building. She’d have to call Sarah to come and pick her up.
Cindy was about to unlock the door, when she felt a thick arm snake around her waist. Before she could cry out, a damp handkerchief was put over her nose and mouth. Cindy’s world began to fade and she slumped in the arms of her captor.
Half an hour later, the phone rang in the empty Sentinel office. The sound echoed off the walls, but no one was there to pick it up.
Sarah Kai frowned, staring at the telephone in her hand, as if by some miracle, it would answer the question nagging at her. Where in the world was her mother? What could possibly be keeping her?
Looking into the kitchen, Sarah could see both her sisters setting the table. She picked up the phone again, dialing a different number.
"Hello?" Becky Watson answered, expecting the caller to be Ronnie Benson, "Oh, hi Sarah. Your mom? Hang on a second, honey." Becky peered out into the alley behind the diner. There was no sign of Cindy Kai or her car.
"Sarah? She must be on her way home," Becky said, "I’m on my way out, but if you need me, call me at home later. Bye."
