“Heather honey,” Becky Watson said into the telephone, “Your Uncle Colt is with Deputy Benson. You and Hannah stay put, I’m on my way to your place right now.” Becky was out the door and into her truck less than 5 minutes later. She drove as fast as she could to the Kai family’s house, a quarter mile away. * * * Travis Wagner donned his bathrobe and made his way to the front door of the house, wondering who was crazy enough to wake him after midnight. The two men at the door smelled as if they had been in the sewer. They were both frowning deeply. “This had better be good,” the rancher stated, leading the pair into his den. The two men exchanged a brief glance. “You tell ‘em,” said Deputy Stu Downing. “Yeah,” snickered Lance Mc Intyre, “Suddenly you’re not Mister Tough-Guy, huh?” “What’s this about, Mc Intyre?” Travis asked, getting impatient. “We had company at the Hiller place tonight,” Lance began, “Benson showed up with Colt Tanner. Tanner’s a sheriff from...” “I know who Tanner is!” Wagner hissed, “What happened?” “We knew we couldn’t let them find anything, but we didn’t want to get caught either,” the ranch foreman continued, “So we ducked out of the barn. Then we shut them up inside and set a bunch of straw on fire outside the doors.” “Woulda done ‘em in for sure if Fredricks hadn’t shown up,” added Downing. “Fredricks?” Wagner asked. “Yeah,” Lance smiled, “Daddy dear and both the boys. They put out the fire in front of the barn and pulled Tanner and Benson out. We stayed around, out of sight. Saw somethin’ real interestin’, too.” “Spit it out, Mc Intyre,” Travis demanded. “If Joe Fredricks is really deaf,” Mc Intyre grinned, “Then I’m the President of the United States.” Travis Wagner let the information seep into his brain. “Who else knows about this?” he asked. “Ryan,” the foreman responded, “I called him earlier. He wants me to confront the kid without too much attention.” “Ryan doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” the elder Wagner said, “I’ll handle the Fredricks boys. We’ll find out what’s really goin’ on with them before making another move.” “Ryan won’t like it,” added Downing with a frown. “Ryan doesn’t like anything,” Mc Intyre stated. * * * “I think we need to tell Cindy Kai about her brother,” Frank Hardy stated on the ride home from the Hiller Ranch. “I think Benson will probably take care of that,” answered Mr. Hardy with a glance in Frank’s direction. Silence permeated the interior of the rented Jeep Cherokee as they continued the drive to their house. Each of the Hardy men were lost in his own thoughts, yet, had they been able to read each others minds, they would know that they were all thinking the same things: ‘Who had killed Collin Anderson? Ryan Wagner? Did Wagner have anything to do with trying to kill Tanner and Benson?’ “Dad?” Joe Hardy finally broke the silence as they reached their driveway, “There’s more going on here than just Jimmy’s murder, isn’t there?” Fenton glanced into the rearview mirror, catching a glimpse of Joe’s troubled blue eyes for just a second. “I believe that’s a correct assumption, son,” Fenton answered. He sighed deeply before speaking again, “Joe, what you did back there was...” “I know, Dad,” interrupted the blond youth, “but I knew the truck could blow and we’d never have had a chance to get Sheriff Tanner or Deputy Benson out of there. There wasn’t time to logically weigh the options. I’m sorry if you’re mad at me, but I’d do the same thing again if I had to.” Frank Hardy tried to stifle a chuckle. He knew his brother’s impetuousness well and Joe’s statement was very true. Joe usually didn’t stop to calculate the risks before jumping in to remedy a situation. “Joseph, I was going to say that, while it was extremely dangerous,” Fenton continued, “I’m very proud of your quick thinking and immediate action. For once, I’m inclined to agree with you. Your response probably saved Ronnie and Colt’s lives.” “You and Frank got the fire out,” Joe added, sharing the credit, “it was a group effort.”
