Becky Watson pulled up into the Kai driveway the same time Sarah Kai arrived home. Sarah ran to Becky and the two women embraced, then walked into the house.

"I couldn’t find Uncle Colt anywhere," Sarah sobbed, tears streaming from her dark, brown eyes, "and Mom is in trouble!" Becky explained that she’d already talked to Heather and that Colt was with Deputy Benson.

"I’m sure we’ll hear from them soon," Becky stated reassuringly. Just then the phone rang, causing Becky and Sarah to jump and bringing Heather and Hannah running from the other room. All four of them stared at the telephone as it rang again.

"W-what if it’s the k-kidnappers again?" asked Heather in a shaky voice. Hannah stood beside her sister, her eyes wide with fear.

"Let me get it," Becky offered. "Hello?"

"Miss Becky? Is that you?" asked Ronnie Benson.

"Oh Ronnie! Thank the Lord!" Becky sighed with relief, "Are we glad to hear from you! Colt needs to get here right away. I’ll stay with the girls ‘til he gets here. Cindy’s been kidnapped and the kidnapper already called here, demandin’ that Colt get outta town or he would kill Cindy."

"What!?" cried Ronnie, "Cindy’s been kidnapped? Oh Lord! Becky, take the girls out to the Fredricks’ place. I’ll be there shortly myself. Tanner’s in the hospital and he’s in pretty bad shape. Someone tried to kill us tonight at the Hiller place."

"No!" Becky cried, gripping the phone. She looked into the anxious faces of the three Kai girls. "Are you alright?"

"Yes," came the reply, "Thanks to Fredricks and his boys. They saved our lives."

"Tell the girls that Colt got hurt," Ronnie advised, "but don’t tell them about us almost gettin’ killed."

"Why’d you have to go and tell Daddy everythin’!" ranted Ryan Wagner. "I coulda taken care of that kid myself!"

"I’m just tellin’ you now so you don’t go gettin’ in more trouble," Lance Mc Intyre stated, "Ryan, let you dad handle this. You keep gettin’ in deeper and deeper." Ryan glared at the foreman.

"This is all Jimmy Mc Curdy’s fault!" seethed the young rancher.

Mc Intyre just shook his head as he watched Ryan storm away.

Frank and Joe Hardy had just crawled wearily into bed when they heard a vehicle pull into their driveway. They both threw on some clothes and ran out to see who had arrived.

Becky Watson and the three Kai girls were talking with their father. The younger girls, despite the gravity of the situation, smiled at the two brothers as they entered.

Before Frank could ask what was going on, Ronnie Benson came in, still covered with blood and soot from the machine barn experience.

"Fenton," Ronnie began, "I don’t want these women left alone. I think it might be good for them to stay over at Collin’s place for a while. You and your boys will be close and can keep an eye on them. I’ll call in the mornin’ and have the Kai’s calls forwarded to Collin’s phone."

Fenton agreed that it was a wise idea to keep an eye on Becky and the girls, especially with Colt in the hospital.

Ronnie took the women over to Collin’s house. The Kai girls went right to bed, but Becky wasn’t about to let Ronnie leave without some answers.

"Where’s Collin?" Becky demanded, "and don’t pretend like you don’t know, Ronnie, ‘cause I can see it in your eyes."

Ronnie Benson sighed. As gently as he could, he told Becky what he and Colt Tanner had found at the Hiller ranch. Then, Ronnie held Becky Watson tightly as sobs of grief wracked her body.

Marcus Williams paced his bedroom floor. Anderson was dead. Chotto was dead. Tanner and Benson were almost killed tonight. ‘Enough is enough,’ the man thought, ‘Too much killin’ goin’ on here. I don’t even know what they plan to do with that Kai woman. I’ve been coverin’ up for them for too long.’

He picked up the phone, wincing as he read the clock face; almost 3 a.m. Wagner wouldn’t like it, but Williams wasn’t going to sit on his hands any longer.

"Travis?" the sheriff said gruffly, "I’m done with this mess. Your kid has gone too far and I’m not goin’ to let him get away with it anymore!"

"Let me remind you, Sheriff," Travis Wagner replied in a menacing voice, "You can’t say anything without putting your own fat neck in a noose. You’ve been in the middle of this from the beginning and if we fall, you’re goin’ down with us. That, my old friend, is a promise."
