Frank and Joe ‘Fredricks’ reported
for work the following morning at the Wagner ranch. The boys were still
tired from the previous nights ordeal. They had only gotten a couple of
hours of sleep and were sore from their rescue efforts at the Hiller
ranch.
Frank, having donned a New York Yankees baseball cap borrowed from Joe, pulled out supplies from the tool shed to do some repair work on the weathervanes that graced the top of each section of the stable roof. Meanwhile, Joe began his cleaning chores for the day in the main stable along with Randy Sampson. By mid-morning, Joe was feeling really tired and couldn’t keep from yawning. He was grateful when Tad Creet said they could take their morning break. The two youths headed outside for some fresh air behind the stable. Frank was just about finished fixing the weathervane mount on the west wing of the stable and was considering taking a break himself. Lack of sleep and heat from the late morning sun were draining him. He intently set to finishing this last weathervane so he could find something to do in a cooler spot. Frank never noticed a second ladder being placed on the opposite side of the stable roof. A figure stealthily moved into a crouch behind the base of the large weathervane. He peered around at the dark-haired boy and smiled slightly. Frank Hardy shifted his weight slightly, putting his hammer in his left hand and reaching awkwardly with his right hand for another nail. He never saw the other man on the roof until the man’s black cowboy boot connected solidly with Frank’s sternum. Already off balance, Frank teetered and began falling backward towards the edge of the roof and the ground 12 feet below. Joe Hardy had just finished eating an apple and was ready to go back inside the stable. Suddenly, Joe felt dizzy, as if he were losing his balance and falling. He knew immediately that Frank was in trouble. Over the years, the Hardy brothers bond had grown so close that they could occasionally feel each other’s pain. Joe knew what he was momentarily feeling was coming from Frank and that Frank was working up on the roof. That thought brought wings to Joe’s feet as he dashed around the end of the stable toward the side of the building where Frank was supposed to be working. As Joe rounded the corner, he gazed in horror as he watched Frank’s arms pinwheeling wildly. Frank was at the edge of the roof! Joe glanced about anxiously, but knew there was no way he could reach his brother in time. To his further horror, Joe saw an abandoned pitchfork laying carelessly on the ground right under his brother. Joe poured on the speed anyway, pumping his sore muscles. "Frank!" Joe screamed as he watched his brother topple off the roof. Frank tried to regain his balance but it was hopeless. Oblivious to everything else around him, Frank concentrated on figuring out a way to survive the inevitable fall. "Too late," He thought as he felt his body carried over the edge from pure momentum. He reflexively reached out blindly for anything to grab. Suddenly, Frank was jerked to a stop so violently that he thought his left arm had been pulled out of the socket. "Frank! Hang on!" Joe called out, rushing to get beneath his brother. Frank was hanging by his left arm, his hand still gripping a hammer that had caught on the edge of the rain gutter that lined the roof. "I’m right below you!" Joe called up, "Put your feet on my shoulders!" Frank felt Joe beneath him and eased his hammer loose from the gutter. Joe swayed beneath the weight of his brother and was afraid he’d lose his balance and send Frank to the ground anyway. Remembering a stack of straw nearby, Joe slowly backed up, avoiding the discarded pitchfork. He felt the straw beneath him and slowly crouched, bending slightly so that Frank would fall backward into the straw. As Frank climbed out of the straw, Joe reached out a hand to help him up. "Ahh!" Frank cried, rubbing his left shoulder. Joe quickly pulled off Frank’s shirt and inspected the shoulder. It wasn’t broken or separated, but would probably be sore for several days from the jarring it took. Joe impulsively pulled Frank into an
embrace and felt his older brother trembling. "It’s okay
Frank," Joe said softly, feeling awkward being in this role. It was
usually Frank rescuing Joe, not the other way around.
