CHAPTER 46

Fenton Hardy spent his day being a detective. He spoke at length with Becky Watson and the Kai girls, confiding in them who he was and what he and his sons were doing there in Colorado.

He also spoke again with Ronnie Benson, wanting to know which deputies were good cops and which ones were pals with the sheriff. He then spoke with several people around the town including the barber, a bank clerk, a mail carrier and the gas station attendant.

He’d kept his questions general and found the over-all consensus was that Sheriff Williams and a few of his flunkies were being paid under the table by Travis Wagner. No one, however, knew exactly why or what the Wagners had to hide.

He returned to his house and then took Becky, Sarah, Heather and Hannah to see Colt Tanner. The Wyoming sheriff was pale and tired, but he was sitting up in bed, eager to hear any news about his sister’s whereabouts.

"I’ll leave these lovely ladies to keep you company, Tanner," Fenton said to the man in the hospital bed, "I’ve got some more digging to do before I can give you any answers."

By late afternoon, many of the balloonists had arrived for the convention on the Wagner Ranch. The north field was sectioned off into two large areas. One area was for the balloonists to pitch their tents or park their campers, the other area was for them to set up their balloons.

Joe Hardy and Randy Sampson spent their afternoon break watching several balloons fill with hot air. Frank joined them, and signed to Joe about Mc Intyre’s invitation to go up with him in his balloon.

They all agreed that Randy would probably be invited to go as well, so the boys hurried back to their duties to finish early, in hopes of taking a hot air balloon ride before going home.

Fenton Hardy spent a frustrating afternoon, hitting brick walls everywhere he went. Newspaper stories about Jimmy Mc Curdy’s death were practically non-existent and most of the townspeople were not willing to give Fenton any information, even after he explained that he was a writer doing a book on unsolved murders, the cover he was using in Colorado. When he took Becky Watson and the Kai girls back to the Anderson house, there had been no further contact with Cindy Kai’s kidnapper.

"I’m going to pick up my sons out at Wagners," Mr. Hardy stated with a sigh, "I hope they’ve had a more productive day than I have!"

After work, Frank Hardy walked out to the parking area outside the stable doors and called his father’s cell-phone. Frank told his dad about riding the hot air balloons and Fenton said he’d not be in any hurry to leave to pick them up then.

Meanwhile, Joe Hardy headed inside the stable toward his locker. He’d worn a lightweight jacket that morning and wanted it in case they got to ride in the balloon with Mc Intyre. He was about to open the door to the employee room, when Lance Mc Intyre stepped out of the small room.

Lance smiled as an idea came into his mind. Joe, assuming the smile was a show of kindness, returned a smile to the man. Joe proceeded to reach for the door as Mc Intyre passed him.

Suddenly, Joe felt the foreman’s muscular arm wrap around him, pinning Joe’s arms to his sides. Mc Intyre’s other hand clamped firmly on Joe’s mouth before the boy could cry out for help.

Lance struggled as he dragged the blond youth away from the door and into a nearby stall. Once in the stall, the foreman pinned Joe to the floor and pulled a large hunting knife from his boot, placing the blade against the boy’s throat.

"Stop your fussin’ now, boy," the foreman glared at Joe with a wicked grin, "I’m just gonna take you on that balloon ride you wanted so bad."

Joe pretended to not understand what the man was saying. "That deaf act won’t work anymore, boy," Lance smiled at the look of shock on Joe’s face. "Yeah. I just happened to be out at the Hiller ranch the other night. Saw you and your daddy and brother savin’ ole Benson and Tanner outta that machine barn. Funny how you seemed to suddenly be able to hear everythin’ your daddy was shoutin’ out there."

"Now, Joey," the man continued, "We’re gonna take a walk out back to my truck. I’m gonna keep this blade real handy, so don’t try anything stupid." The man pulled Joe to his feet. Joe looked around quickly for an escape or possible weapon, but Mc Intyre seemed to read his mind. Joe felt the point of the blade probe his lower back. Joe sighed in resignation and walked toward the main stable in front of Mc Intyre.

Tad Creet heard a scuffle in the hall of the stable. He watched Lance Mc Intyre pull the Fredricks kid into an empty stall. Tad walked silently in his moccasins to a nearby stall and listened to Lance talking to the boy.

When Mc Intyre and the boy started walking toward the back of the stable, Tad scrunched down low in the stall and hid out of sight. He followed, staying well behind them, but heard every word the boy and Mc Intyre said. Tad Creet knew that for once, he couldn’t ignore what was going on. He needed to find the other Fredricks boy fast.
