CHAPTER 46

Joe Hardy flexed his fingers on his left hand. He bent his wrist up and down and smiled broadly. ‘Freedom!’ he thought to himself. His left forearm was pale and the skin was flaky and dry, but the cast was finally gone.

"Well, Sweetie," Laura Hardy smiled, seeing the excitement in her son’s eyes, "you’re almost back to your old self again!"

"My arm looks really gross, though," Joe said, wrinkling his nose. Dr. John Bates chuckled at Joe’s complaint.

"Just use some over-the-counter moisturizer and let nature do the rest, Joe," the doctor said, noticing that Joe already had the beginning of a summer tan.

"All the more reason to sit out by the pool this summer!" Joe responded, rising to leave the doctor’s office with his mother.

"Well, Mr. Fredricks," Travis Wagner smiled as he spoke on the telephone with Fenton Hardy, "How did your son hear about our ranch?"

"Joe went to camp with a boy named Jimmy Mc Curdy a couple years ago," Mr. Hardy said, using the cover story he fabricated for Joe, "Jimmy talked about the ranch and some of the boys he’d worked with there. Joe was excited and wanted to work on the ranch then. Of course, he was too young and a bit far away from Colorado. He’s 17 now. He’s very strong and a hard worker."

"I see," Mr. Wagner responded, "Jimmy Mc Curdy was a good kid. He’s no longer at the ranch." Mr. Hardy didn’t respond right away, hoping Wagner might say something more about Mc Curdy’s alleged murder. When he didn’t, Fenton spoke again.

"We heard about Jimmy’s death through one of the other campers," Mr. Hardy said, "Joe was quite upset at the time." Again, Mr. Hardy paused, but Mr. Wagner didn’t respond.

"When could your son be here, Mr. Fredricks?" Travis Wagner asked, using the Hardy’s cover name.

"My sons and I will be leaving New York next week," Fenton answered, "We should be settled in within a week after we arrive in Colorado."

"Did I hear you say, ‘sons’? Plural?" Wagner asked, "You have more sons than just Joe?"

"Joe is my younger son. Frank is eighteen and doesn’t have Joe’s...disadvantage," Mr. Hardy replied, referring to Joe’s fake deafness.

"Will he be seeking employment here as well?" Mr. Wagner inquired.

"Certainly. At least for the summer," Mr. Hardy answered, "But as I said, he doesn’t have Joe’s disability."

"The job I have in mind isn’t for a disabled person," Travis stated, thrilled at the prospect of having a strong, young man to do all the repair work of the stable, "My stable is in need of repair; basic carpentry work. Do you think your older son would be interested? It would only be for the summer."

"I’ll certainly speak with him about that, Mr. Wagner," Fenton responded, shaking his head in disbelief that a job for Frank at the Wagner Ranch had just fallen into his lap, "though I’m sure that Frank will jump at the opportunity. Ever since they were small, Frank has always had an overwhelming need to watch out for his younger brother. He’ll love working so close to Joe."

"Wonderful!" Mr. Wagner enthused, "Contact me as soon as you arrive in Colorado. We’ll work out all the details then!"

Vanessa was smothering Joe Hardy with affection, which he didn’t mind at all. "I miss you already!" she cried, hugging him fiercely.

"Hopefully," Joe responded, holding Vanessa close, "We’ll get the truth about the Mc Curdy case quickly and be back to enjoy the rest of the summer before you know it!"

"I just don’t think it will be that easy," Callie Shaw responded, clutching Frank Hardy’s hand possessively. "From all you two have told us, someone doesn’t want the truth to come out."

The Hardy brothers had invited their girlfriends for a picnic on the beach to fill them in on the case they were working on.

"So when exactly are you leaving?" Vanessa asked.

"Not ‘til next week," Joe answered, "But we’ll be really busy this week getting ready to go."

"We have a lot of preliminary research done, thanks to Joe," Frank gave his brother an appreciative smile, "but we need to prepare physically and mentally for our ‘roles’ in this case."

"I don’t like the idea of you working so close to the people who might be responsible for Jimmy’s death," Vanessa stated, holding Joe even tighter.

"We’ll have a better idea of what we’re up against once we arrive in Colorado," Frank stated reassuring the girls, "We’ll just be talking to a lot of people and..."

"Asking a lot of questions! That always leads to trouble!" Callie wailed, clinging tighter to Frank’s arm.

"Yeah, we’re especially interested in talking to a certain Ryan Wagner," Joe stated.
