Cindy Kai was determined that she was
not going to die in her private prison. The floor was made of packed
dirt. Maybe she could dig her way out.
Cindy took apart her watch and pulled off the back. It was small, but would work effectively as a small shovel. Since she didn’t know how far the cement block walls went into the ground, the most logical place to dig was under the door. The hardened earth was difficult to dig, but Cindy was encouraged after several hours, the afternoon light was now showing through the gap she had created. Cindy glanced at the jug of water Ryan Wagner had left for her. The precious liquid could soften the dirt, making it much easier to dig. However, using up her water supply would mean she’d have to succeed at digging her way out or she’d die from dehydration. Deciding to use at least a little water on the ground, she was able to dig faster. In a few hours, there was a 4-inch gap under the door. She’d estimated that she’d need at least a 10-inch gap to get her narrow hips through. Cindy looked at the remaining water. She took a long drink before pouring the remaining water under the door. Knowing she had no more water to drink just pushed Cindy Kai’s determination to get out of her prison. * * * Deputy Ronnie Benson had listened intently to Fenton Hardy as he described what was happening at the Wagner Ranch. Tad Creet was dead, Joe Hardy was kidnapped by Lance Mc Intyre and Cindy Kai was still missing. Ronnie needed to make a couple phone calls. His first call was placed to Becky Watson and the Kai girls, telling them to stay put and keep all the doors and windows securely locked; No one knew where Ryan Wagner was. The second call was placed to the FBI branch office in Denver. Benson was directed to Agent David Lonnett. Ronnie told Lonnett everything he knew, starting at Jimmy Mc Curdy’s death. He also informed the agent about the Hardy’s involvement and their suspicions about Sheriff Marcus Williams. Agent Lonnett and his partner, Agent Raven Jackson, promised to head out to Silverthorne immediately and would meet Benson and the Hardy men at the Wagner Ranch. Ronnie then called Sheriff Williams and reported Tad Creet’s murder, but didn’t tell the man who was suspected of killing Creet. Neither did Ronnie bother to mention the FBI coming or the two missing people, Joe and Cindy. "You’ll be in for a few surprises, Sheriff," said the deputy as he headed out the door. * * * Frank Hardy drove furiously across the fields toward the hot air balloons. He didn’t know for sure how much of a head start Mc Intyre had on him. As they neared the balloons, both Frank and Fenton saw that several were heating up and would be taking off shortly. There were at least a dozen ready to fly. How would they possibly find which one held Joe? "Frank," Fenton ordered, "Park here. You head that way, to our left, I’ll go right. Ask for Mc Intyre’s balloon. The others will probably know which one is his." Frank nodded in agreement and headed out. * * * Lance Mc Intyre had arrived 15 minutes earlier than Frank and Fenton Hardy. He knew they were hot on his tail and he didn’t have much time. He parked beside his gondola and saw that his partner, Deputy Stu Downing had already started heating the balloon as Mc Intyre had ordered him earlier. Lance glanced in the back seat at the unconscious form of Joe Hardy. He couldn’t just carry the kid to the balloon with so many people around. He glanced to the back of the truck and noticed a heavy canvas tarp. "Perfect," the man smiled, climbing out of the cab. He hauled the tarp into the club cab, struggling with its awkward bulk. He finally succeeded in getting the tarp inside. He rolled Joe into the tarp and wound it around the boy. He secured the open ends and the edge with more duct tape, and then he hauled Joe out over his shoulder, dumping him onto the gondola floor. Joe Hardy felt his body being pushed and felt thick, heavy, musty smelling material being wrapped around him. Joe fought to climb out of the hazy, pain-filled fog that seemed to be encasing his head, but soon he felt the canvas cocooning him so tightly that he was fighting just to breathe. Joe tried to suck in some air but couldn’t find any. His head began to swim and soon he was engulfed in blackness. "Hey Mac!" called out Artie Fisher, a nearby balloonist, "Great night for a moonlight ride, huh?" "Yeah," grinned Mc Intyre,
"I’m certainly looking forward to it." He began adjusting the
burner for lift off, while Downing began to untie the mooring lines that
held the balloon to the ground.
