Ryan Wagner growled in frustration.
Things were getting too complicated. He’d decided that the Kai woman
was a liability and needed to be eliminated. He wondered, not for the
first time, why he felt no remorse for what he was about to do.
"It’s all self-preservation," the young ranch heir proclaimed. He smiled and thought about his future. Maybe he could kill his daddy and inherit the ranch now. He’d have to make it look like an accident of course, or at least frame someone else to take the fall. That made Ryan grin as he thought of Carl Whitefeather. ‘That giant retard never knew how he saved my skin!’ Ryan gloated to himself. He turned his truck off the road and headed toward the field where Cindy Kai was imprisoned, when suddenly his headlights picked up the form of someone dashing into the nearby woods. He threw the truck into park and jumped out, following the woman. It didn’t take long for him to catch up to Cindy Kai. He punched the woman in the face and dragged her back to the pick up. Tossing her in the truck bed, he quickly tied her wrists and ankles again. Ryan started to climb back into the truck, when he heard some unusual sounding voices in the clearing ahead. Curiosity got the better of him and he walked up to the clearing, staying behind a huge oak tree. Ryan watched in wonder as two hot air balloons came drifting into the area. He recognized one as being Lance Mc Intyre’s and thought that maybe Lance and Downing had come to check on the Kai woman. He began to saunter out to greet his friends, deciding that they might want to have a little ‘fun’ with Cindy Kai before he killed her. * * * Frank Hardy grinned in pure relief as a second hot air balloon floated into sight. His cell-phone chirped to life and Bert introduced himself to the dark-haired Hardy boy. Frank listened intently as Bert instructed him on how to adjust the burner and how to work the vents that controlled the altitude of the balloon. Frank did as he was instructed and felt the balloon drifting back towards the ground. Joe Hardy hurt all over. Just an over-all aching that prevailed over his entire body. His head was thumping like Indians were doing a war dance inside his brain. He slowly opened his eyes and wondered if he was dreaming. He saw his brother Frank, working the burner controls and a huge hot air balloon billowing above him. Joe tried to focus and sit up. Waves of nausea assaulted him, but he choked the bile down and looked around. He was in the gondola basket of a hot air balloon that Frank was controlling. That thought helped clear Joe’s foggy mind quickly. Frank didn’t know how to operate a hot air balloon! Joe tried to stand, only to find his ankles were taped together. He noticed Frank’s pocketknife nearby and cut himself free. Joe then stood up, hanging onto the side of the gondola for support. "Joe!" Frank cried out in alarm, "You shouldn’t try to stand! You’ve been through a lot in the past 2 hours. Lie down and rest." "You’ve got to be kidding?" countered the younger Hardy, "with you piloting this thing by yourself? Think I’ll just keep an eye out in case I need to jump out of this thing in a hurry." Frank smiled as he noticed the familiar, teasing twinkle in Joe’s eyes. He knew for sure that his little brother wasn’t suffering from any lasting effects of oxygen depravation. * * * FBI agents David Lonnett and Raven Jackson arrived at the Wagner Ranch, just as Deputy Benson and several other officers were debating about who should escort the group of conspirators to the jail. Agent Lonnett took control of the prisoners, including Sheriff Williams. He took Ronnie’s friends, Deputies Harris and Maloney, with him to the sheriff’s station in Silverthorne. Agent Jackson stayed to get statements from everyone, but realized she’d get nowhere until Fenton Hardy’s sons were firmly on the ground again. Fenton had been in contact with Artie and Bert in the rescue balloon and waited to hear where the boys would be landing. "Mr. Hardy," Bert called into the direct-connect phone line, "there’s a clearing about 7 miles north of the Wagner Ranch. That’s where we’re drifting and it will be a good place to guide the boys down." Bert proceeded to tell them in more detail, exactly where the field was located. "I know the place," Ronnie said, "It’s the back acre of the Hiller place. They used to do skeet-shootin’ out there. Don’t think there’s much out on that land but a little storage shed." "Let’s head out then," Fenton suggested, anxious to see his two boys. Fenton drove the black Cherokee, following Ronnie Benson and Agent Jackson who were riding in Collin Anderson’s SUV. * * * Frank opened flaps while Joe, feeling considerably better now, worked the burner, the hot air balloon was getting much closer to the ground and the brothers had to concentrate to keep in control. Artie Fisher and Bert Gilbert were pleased with the way the Hardy brothers were handling the craft. They continued to stay afloat above Frank and Joe’s hot air balloon. The balloon landed with a gentle
bump, then bounced up again before settling on the ground. Frank and Joe
gave each other a triumphant high-five, and then began climbing out of
the basket with mooring stakes and tether lines in their hands.
