CHAPTER 46

Fenton Hardy felt his heart leap into his throat as three gunshots split the silence of the night. Ronnie had stopped the SUV and was peering through the darkness.

"Shots came from over yonder, Mr. Hardy," the young officer offered.

"Let’s keep going on foot, gentlemen," Agent Raven Jackson ordered, "Hardy, you go left along the trees, Benson and I will move down the right. Keep alert!"

Fenton nodded and moved out. ‘Please God, keep my boys safe!’ he silently prayed as he crouched low and crept forward.

* * *

Joe Hardy had heard the shots and his brother’s warning. He moved off to the side of the path Wagner and Frank had made through the brush. Despite his weariness and headache, Joe picked up his pace and began moving so that he could get in front of Ryan.

"Ah-h-h!" came a piercing scream.

"Frank!" Joe cried, recognizing his brother’s voice. "Where are you?"

"No," Frank replied, "Keep after Ryan, Joe! I’ll be okay, just a scratch."

Joe reluctantly did as he was told and continued his pursuit of Wagner. Joe reached the dirt road, just as Wagner was reaching for the door handle of his pickup truck.

Joe stopped as Wagner spun around, pointing his gun at Joe’s chest. "Stay back, Kid," Ryan snarled, "I don’t know why you’re here or what you’re doin’ with Mac’s balloon, but I’m outta here and you’re not gonna stop me!"

Joe put his hands out, palms up, holding his ground, "I can tell you what’s going on, Mr. Wagner, sir," Joe offered in a patronizing tone, "Your buddies, Downing and Mc Intyre along with your daddy and Sheriff Williams, are all in police custody right now."

Ryan stared at the blond boy, his gun hand wavering slightly, "I don’t believe you! You’re lyin’!" Joe innocently shrugged his shoulders, keeping an eye behind Ryan’s truck where he caught sight of Frank moving in close.

Ryan once again steadied his hand and took aim at the younger Hardy brother. "You know what, kid? It don’t matter. I’m outta here and too bad for you!" With that, Ryan pulled the trigger, but not before Joe took a dive into the dirt on the side of the road. Before Ryan could aim again, Frank came around the front of the truck and knocked Ryan’s gun out of his hand with an expertly placed kick.

Cindy Kai, having regained consciousness earlier, had listened to the exchange between Ryan Wagner and Joe Hardy. She worked feverishly on the ropes that secured her wrists, rubbing them against a rusty hunting knife she found in the truck bed. She knew Ryan wouldn’t hesitate to kill Joe and she wasn’t about to let that happen.

As soon as her wrists were free, she rolled to the edge of the truck. She picked up the horse bridle and bit that was stowed in the truck and peered over the side of the truck bed. Joe Hardy’s eyes were locked on Ryan’s; he wouldn’t even notice Cindy. She gripped the bridle, ready to strike.

Ryan staggered back from Frank’s kick, gripping his hurting wrist. Before he could think about retaliating, he was hit from behind as Cindy brought the bridle and bit down on Ryan’s head.

Again, Ryan staggered, turning to see Cindy kneeling in the truck bed.

"You!" he growled, "I should have killed you when I had the chance!"

He lunged for the woman, but Joe had gotten to his feet and took a flying leap at Ryan, tackling him against the side of the pickup.

Both Ryan and Joe tumbled to the ground, but Joe recovered quicker, moving on top of Ryan and delivering a blow to the man’s jaw, knocked Ryan out cold.

"FBI!" called out a voice from the nearby trees, "Everybody freeze!"

Joe gave his brother a lope-sided grin, "Better late than never, huh, Bro?" Frank returned Joe’s grin, then leaned back against the truck, sighing wearily.

* * *

Later that night, the Hardys, the Kais, Ronnie Benson, Becky Watson and Colt Tanner sat in the ‘Fredricks’ kitchen. They looked like a group of wounded soldiers, just in from battle.

Frank sported a sling, courtesy of the bullet that had grazed his already sore left arm; Joe wore a gauze bandage on the side of his head where Mc Intyre had clubbed him; and Cindy was wearing the latest fashion of multicolor bruising on her cheek, thanks to Ryan Wagner’s right hook.

"Stu Downing was the first to crack," Mr. Hardy was saying, "He confessed to killing Collin and Chotto. He also admitted that he knew Ryan had killed Mc Curdy, because Ryan bragged about getting away with it, thanks to Carl Whitefeather."

"After Stu’s confession," continued Ronnie, "It was like the ‘Domino’ effect. Mc Intyre confessed to his part in killin’ Collin, Chotto and Creet, the sheriff confessed to his part in the cover-up, and even Travis Wagner admitted that he knew his son was a murderer. Ryan was the one who tried to kick Frank off the roof and kidnapped Cindy. Mc Intyre’s gonna be charged with kidnapping and tryin’ to kill Joe as well."

"That’s all great and I hope the whole lot of conspirators spend a long time in jail, but the best thing of all," Joe grinned triumphantly, "is that Carl’s a free man now!"
