THE CHAPTERS

Two months later:
Frank Hardy smiled as his mother, Laura, adjusted his bow tie. "You look so handsome!" she declared. "What am I?" asked Joe, equally donned in a gray and black tuxedo, "Chopped liver?" He wore his most hurt, puppy-dog expression. "You both look stunning!" Laura replied with a chuckle. "I’m going to my seat now. Smile pretty boys, I’ll be taking lots of pictures!" As Mrs. Hardy left and returned to her seat beside Becky Watson in the chapel, the brothers glanced at their side-by-side reflections in the full-length mirror of the men’s dressing room of the rented chapel. "She’s right, you know," Joe said with a cocky smile, "We are stunning!" "Please!" Frank countered, "If your head gets any bigger, it won’t fit in your football helmet next month!" The Hardy family had returned to Silverthorne, Colorado for the wedding of Madeline Whitefeather and Colt Tanner. After all the arrests were made and Carl was officially cleared of all murder charges, Maddie had moved back to Silverthorne. A week after the arrests, at a town council meeting, Ronnie Benson had persuaded the people of Silverthorne to ask Colt Tanner to act as interim sheriff until the November elections. Colt, knowing this was where Maddie would want to live, agreed and planned to run for the sheriff position in the fall, knowing Torrey, Wyoming was in good hands with the capable staff he’d trained. As the wedding music played, the wedding party lined up in the hall. Sarah Kai and Ronnie Benson, sporting a new crew cut, proceeded down the aisle first, arm in arm. They had started dating and smiled warmly at each other as they walked. Heather Kai was next, escorted by Frank Hardy. She glanced back at her sister, Hannah, briefly wishing she could have traded partners. After all, Hannah really thought Frank was too cute, while she wished Joe Hardy would stay in Colorado forever. He was the hottest guy she ever knew. She sighed and put on her prettiest smile as she let the dark-haired Hardy brother lead her forward. Hannah looked longingly at the back of Frank Hardy’s dark hair. ‘Oh well,’ she thought, ‘Joe’s cute too.’ Joe nervously took Hannah’s arm and guided her down the aisle. Cindy Kai looked radiant as the Matron of Honor. She smiled at her tall, handsome escort. Carl Whitefeather grinned in return and walked proudly toward the front of the chapel. As the music swelled, Maddie Whitefeather moved to the doorway. She was wearing a pale peach gown that complimented her natural coloring beautifully. Her escort gave her a wink asking, "Are you ready, Maddie?" "Yes, Fenton," she said, smiling up at Mr. Hardy, "I’ve been ready for quite a while now!"
* * * At the reception that followed the wedding, Frank, Joe, Heather and Hannah spent time getting to know each other better. All too soon it was time to head back to the hotel rooms where the Hardys were staying. The family wished the newlyweds well, and bid good-bye to their other friends. The ride to the hotel was quiet; each member of the family lost to his or her own thoughts. Frank glanced at his brother and smiled. Joe’s eyes were closed but he was smiling. "What are you thinking about, little brother?" Frank asked, gently nudging Joe in the ribs. Joe opened his sapphire eyes and looked at Frank. "Ever wonder where Mr. Kai is?" Joe asked. The question surprised Frank and Joe chuckled at his brother’s expression. "Actually, no." Frank replied, "I assumed he was either dead or they were divorced. Why?" "I was curious, so I asked Hannah," Joe said. "Joseph!" declared Mrs. Hardy, "How could you?" "I was discreet, Mom!" Joe said defensively, "Anyway, Hannah was more than willing to tell me about it. Her dad was a free-lance journalist. Did a lot of work for ‘National Geographic’ and magazines like that. When Hannah was 7 years old, her dad left on a trip to inland China. When he arrived in Hong Kong, he called and said he would be heading over to the mainland the next day. Well, that was the last time they ever heard from him." "Wow," Frank exclaimed, "was he looked for at all?" "FBI, police, private investigators," Joe responded, "You name it. But no one could find a trace of him." The car fell silent again. Only the hum of the engine could be heard. "It’s a seven year old mystery," Frank said, breaking the silence. "The Mc Curdy case was five years old and we solved it," added Joe. Mr. Hardy glanced in the rear view mirror and caught both Joe’s blue eyes and Frank’s brown ones. Both pairs carried a twinkle that was unmistakable. "Alright," Fenton sighed, glancing at his wife, "Maybe, I said MAYBE, we’ll look into it when we get back to Bayport." Frank and Joe Hardy exchanged a quick high-five and a grin, knowing they’d be working on a new mystery soon.
