Colt Tanner noticed immediately that the youngest Hardy was pale and stressed looking. He winced inwardly, remembering how difficult it had been to get the boy on the rescue helicopter after they had been found in the Whitefeather’s cabin. It had obviously been a difficult task for Joe Hardy to fly again, after having survived such a horrendous plane crash just over a month ago.
Tanner also noted how Frank Hardy hovered ever so close by his younger brother’s side, offering support and protection. He was as amazed at the closeness of the two brothers as he had been when he observed them at the hospital after Fenton and Joe’s ordeal.
"Tanner," greeted Fenton Hardy, extending his hand to the lawman, "It’s certainly good to see you again."
"And under better circumstances," the sheriff smiled, shaking hands with Fenton, then Frank and finally, Joe.
Colt escorted the detective and his sons to his white jeep, after retrieving the Hardy’s luggage. Frank and Joe put all of their luggage in the back, and then climbed into the back seat of the jeep, while their father occupied the front, passenger seat.
"It’s an hour drive to Torrey," the sheriff stated, putting the jeep into gear, "but I figured you’d want a break from flying after that long flight." Joe glanced at the rearview mirror and caught Tanner giving him a quick wink.
Fenton Hardy gave the sheriff a quick smile of gratitude for his consideration on Joe’s behalf. Frank was also thankful that they were driving and grinned as he watched Joe’s eyes taking in the breath-taking scenery of the Rocky Mountains.

"We might have a bit of a problem," Sheriff Marcus Williams said quietly into the telephone in his office.
"It’s your job to keep problems under control, Sheriff," stated the voice on the other end of the phone. "What seems to be the problem?"
"Anderson’s been talking to Colt Tanner in Wyoming about the Mc Curdy case," the sheriff responded. There was only silence on the other end of the line.
"You still there?" Sheriff Williams finally asked.
"Get rid of Anderson permanently," the voice calmly replied.
"What? Are you crazy?" the sheriff cried, running a hand through his thin, gray hair, "Just how am I suppose to do that?"
"I’m sure you’ll come up with something," the voice said, "The body can’t be found, Williams."

Twenty-two year old Randy Sampson wasn’t surprised when his mother told him that Travis Wagner had called, asking if Randy would come back to work for him. Mr. Wagner said that firing Randy was a misunderstanding and that the other boy, Ben Greene was responsible.
Randy, who had Down’s Syndrome and functioned at a 14-year-old mental level, had worked at the ranch for the past three years and was aware of both Travis and Ryan Wagner’s short temper. Both were impulsive men and Randy had seen many workers get fired, only to show up for work again a week later.
He arrived at the ranch early on his first day back and met Tad Creet near the stable supply shed. The elderly Native-American saw the youth coming. He too, was not surprised that Randy was back to work at the ranch. He was well aware of the fact that many people who got themselves fired, were often called back to work.
"Hello Mr. Tad," Randy grinned, "You glad to see me?"
Chee grunted in reply and handed the boy a shovel and bucket.
"Get to work, Mucker," Tad gruffly stated, "and don’t make Boss Wagner mad again!" * * *
When they arrived in Torrey, Colt Tanner took the Hardys right to their motel, allowing them to settle in a bit and freshen up before heading into the mountains.
Fenton Hardy immediately called his wife, while Joe headed for the shower, and Frank laid down on the bed for a quick nap. Laura Hardy was relieved and glad to hear that Joe had survived his ordeal on the plane.
An hour later, the Hardys were again in Colt Tanner’s jeep. This time they were heading into the mountains along a treacherous 30-mile trail toward The Whitefeather cabin.
Joe Hardy had been nervous about going into the mountains again, but much to his relief, the scenery was different than he remembered. The natural vegetation had filled in and the snow was completely gone, except on the mountain peaks that rose above the timberline.
Frank Hardy had traveled this trail before, riding on the back of an ATV quad with Jack Wayne. He remembered the roughness of the ride, but this time he could appreciate the spectacular view instead of worrying about his father or brother’s survival.
Conversation between the foursome was limited, due to the noise of the jeep’s powerful engine, but Fenton managed to question Tanner on the case at hand.
Tanner supplied Mr. Hardy by telling him of the conversation he’d had with Sgt. Collin Anderson at the airport.
"With
his help and a bit of luck," Tanner continued, "we might be
able to bring that crooked sheriff down along with Mc Curdy’s
killer."
