CHAPTER 13

The figure moved silently through the dust-shrouded rooms of the old mill. He’d been there often enough, that navigating in the darkness was not a problem. He found the items he sought and left as silently as he had come.

Frank Hardy walked briskly toward the front door of their Bayport home. The doorbell rang out for a third time before the dark-haired 18-year-old pulled the oak door open.

"Hello, young man," a small man of middle-age greeted, quickly adjusting his rimless glasses on the end of his nose.

"Hello, Sir," Frank politely said. "May I help you?"

"Only if you’re Fenton Hardy," the man replied with an easy smile, referring to Frank’s private detective father.

"Do you have an appointment with my Dad?" Frank inquired.

"Yes," the visitor replied, "although I’m a bit early. My name is Percy Meadows."

"Ah, Mr. Meadows!" called a voice from the hallway behind Frank. Frank turned to face a man with the same dark hair and eyes as his own. "I see you’ve met my son, Frank."

Fenton Hardy opened the door wide to let Mr. Meadows enter. Mr. Hardy led the man into his office in the back of the Hardy home. Frank, curious about the small man, followed behind the two older men.

"Frank," Mr. Hardy smiled at his son, "would you please find your brother, and then join us in my office?" Frank quickly dashed up the back staircase of their century-old house, stopping outside his brother’s bedroom door.

Frank put his ear to the door and grinned as he heard Joe yelling at his computer. He could picture his year younger brother’s handsome face in a frustrated scowl. Working on a computer was not one of Joe’s favorite things to be doing on a Saturday morning, but Joe had a paper to write for English class.

Frank knocked on the door, opening it enough to poke his head into Joe’s room. Joe’s back was to the door and the younger Hardy was running both hands through his thick blond hair, growling at the monitor in front of him.

"What’s the problem, Joe?" Frank asked, stepping into the room. Joe glanced behind him, his sapphire blue eyes locking onto his brother’s brown ones.

"I hate this stupid machine!" Joe said, exasperation evident in his voice. "It won’t do what I want it to do!"

"Want me to take a look?" Frank offered. Unlike his younger brother, Frank found computers to be fun and challenging.

"Sure," Joe replied, rising from the chair so Frank could work. In just minutes, Frank had Joe’s program working again.

"I don’t know if I’ll ever get the hang of this," Joe said, as Frank finished.

"You were doing just fine," Frank replied, standing up and putting a hand on Joe’s shoulder. "It was just a glitch in the programming. Just call me when that happens and it’ll save you a lot of frustration." Joe gave his brother a smile and thanked him for his help.

"What did you come up here for anyway?"

"Whoa! I almost forgot!" Frank answered, "Dad’s got a new client and he wants us to sit in on the meeting!"

"Wahoo!" Joe shouted exuberantly. "Let’s go!" There was almost nothing the Hardy brothers liked more than solving mysteries; whether it was helping their detective father or working on a case of their own. They reached their father’s office and knocked on the door.

"Come in, boys," called Mr. Hardy from inside. The boys moved into the book-lined room. Frank sat in the available leather chair, while Joe perched on the corner of his father’s mahogany desk. Fenton quickly introduced Joe to Mr. Meadows.

"Boys," Fenton Hardy began, "Mr. Meadows recently purchased a piece of property here in Bayport that you have some history with." Both boys looked from their father to Mr. Meadows, then back to their father.

"He and his wife have purchased the old Turner mill and about five acres of land around it."

Frank and Joe exchanged a knowing glance. The Turner mill had been the sight of one of their first cases. At the time, it had been owned by Elekton Controls Limited, a company that moved out of Bayport shortly after the Hardys broke the case of THE SECRET OF THE OLD MILL. Joe hid a smile as he recalled how inexperienced he and Frank had been then. Even so, they put a group of counterfeiters behind bars for their efforts.

"So, why do you need a detective, Mr. Meadows?" Joe asked the little man.

"Well," Percy Meadows responded, "I believe the mill is haunted!"
