As soon as Joe and the
hit man disappeared over the rise, Tony Prito jumped from the tree and
ran with all his might toward the old mill.
After stopping to catch his breath at the side of the building, he pulled the radio from his pocket. "‘Wiz’, this is ‘Pizza’. Come in, please!" "I copy, ‘Pizza’. Where are you? What’s going on?" Phil Cohen asked into the radio. "We got a big problem," Tony cried. "Joe’s leading the hit man to Mr. Hardy, but there’s a major glitch. That creepo strapped a bomb to Frank!" "What? Wait, how could you know that?" Phil questioned. "Joe made a big deal about it just as he passed by the tree I was hiding in. I’m sure he did it to warn us," Tony explained. "Anyway, it doesn’t matter. The question is, can you disarm a bomb?" * * * "What’s this?" Torrance Poole asked as Joe began climbing down into the pit that led to the tunnel. Joe quickly explained about the tunnel that led to the cave where Walsh was hiding. "Clever," Poole said, running a hand over his smooth head. Then he frowned as he peered into the pit. The space was small and the kid might try something, despite his brother’s present predicament. Poole took the small detonator from his pocket. "I’ve got your brother’s life in my hand, Joey," Poole stated as he began the descent. "Don’t try anything stupid." Joe looked up at the man, feeling a mix of anger and helplessness. He couldn’t do anything to help Frank and he certainly wouldn’t do anything that would put Frank’s life in jeopardy. He could only pray that his father knew what was going on, and had a plan to deal with the bomb. * * * "These men are friends of mine," Fenton Hardy explained to Mike Walsh. He introduced the man to his associate, Sam Radley and to his pilot friend, Jack Wayne. "Y-your son is leading the hit man h-here?" Walsh stammered. He’d been tricked and betrayed by a bunch of teenagers. "It will be just him and Joe," Fenton said calmly. "We’ll easily overpower the man, and then we can call in the police." "We need you to draw Poole out," the detective stated carefully, using the hit man’s name and watching Walsh. Mike’s eyes grew wide with fear and he began backing away. "We’ll all be here," Sam offered. "Poole won’t get near you." With that, both Fenton and Sam pulled out their weapons. "O-okay," Mike said softly. "I want this nightmare to end. I’ll do whatever you say." * * * Phil Cohen and Tony Prito made their way into the mill. They’d left Biff Hooper to guard the outside and to get a message to Mr. Hardy about the bomb. The two teens searched the downstairs, and then climbed up to the second floor. When they reached the room where Frank Hardy was held captive, Phil and Tony gasped. Swallowing the bile that threatened the back of his throat, Phil walked cautiously up to his friend. He saw the panic in Frank’s eyes and tried to reassure him. "Frank? Is it safe to remove this?" Phil asked, pointing to the gag in Frank’s mouth. Frank slowly nodded. Phil carefully removed the cloth. "You need to get out of here! Joe’s taking Poole to kill Walsh," Frank said hoarsely. "Once Walsh is dead, he’ll set off this bomb and he’ll kill Joe!" Tony quickly explained to Frank what was going on, and that Mr. Hardy, Sam Radley and Jack Wayne were waiting for Poole in the cave. "Biff is contacting your dad," Phil added. "In the meantime, I thought we’d disarm this new jewelry you’re wearing." "There’s a booby-trap," Frank explained, "We need to re-route before you try to disconnect anything." "You watched him make this thing, didn’t you?" Phil asked with a grin. Frank slowly nodded. "Follow my directions," Frank replied, "and we might live to tell our grandkids about this adventure." The process of disarming the bomb was painstakingly slow. All three boys were sweating profusely and nerves were tight. What if Biff couldn’t reach Mr. Hardy? What if Joe accidentally made the guy mad? What if Phil or Frank made a mistake? * * * "‘Sport’ calling ‘Sherlock’, come in please!" Fenton Hardy picked up his two-way radio and responded. "‘Sport’? Where is ‘Wiz’? What’s going on?" "Joe and Poole are in the tunnel by now, but there’s a problem," Biff answered. "Phil and Tony are trying to disarm a bomb that was strapped to Frank. Poole has the detonator with him!" "Oh my God!" Mr. Hardy cried, hearing the news. The four men near him stood in shock. They all realized their original plan to attack Poole wouldn’t work. Too many lives were now in danger.
