Both Joe and Frank Hardy
were anxious to discuss Mike Walsh’s situation with their father, but
they had agreed to wait and talk to him after the two Hardy women went to
bed.
The evening seemed to stretch on forever and Joe was growing very impatient. It seemed to him, that both his mother and aunt had an unusual desire to stay up late that night. Finally, just after the late night news was coming on, Mrs. Hardy announced that she was going to get ready for bed. Both Frank and Joe promptly rose from their seats in the comfortable family room and kissed her goodnight. Fenton Hardy kissed his wife and promised to join her after the news. Gertrude Hardy put down her knitting and stood up a few moments later. She, too, said that she was retiring for the evening, bidding the Hardy men goodnight. Joe nearly burst at the seams in his enthusiasm. "Dad! We’ve got a lot to tell you!" Fenton smiled at Joe’s exuberance. "Judging from your present manner, this evening had to be pure torture for you, Joe!" the detective stated, grinning broadly. Joe smiled in return, feeling his neck and cheeks turn red. "Come along, my boys," Mr. Hardy encouraged. He led the boys down the hallway to his office in the back of the house. "So, tell me what you’ve found," Fenton began. "I’m assuming this has to do with the old mill?" "Right!" Joe started. "I chased the ghost last night!" "Only the ghost wasn’t a ghost," Frank picked up, "he’s a man on the run." "Okay," Mr. Hardy carefully rubbed his chin. "Give me all the details." Together, Frank and Joe told their father all about Walsh, the mill, the tunnel and the hit man.
* * * Torrance Poole watched the Hardy family that night with delight. In his line of work, he learned to study people and their habits. He recorded notes on each member of the Hardy family. Fenton – Reserved, cautious; Openly affectionate to wife and sons Wife – Blond, name unknown; pretty, petite. Graceful yet strong. Very loving toward rest of family Older woman?? Who?? Aunt, mother (not old enough)?? Brisk, efficient. Probably bossy and domineering Franklin – called Frank - dark hair like Fenton – much like father. Reserved, conservative; probably the older brother Joseph – Goes by Joe - blond like mother – impatient, anxious; Easy to smile & laugh; more outgoing After the lights in the house were extinguished, he decided to head back to his motel room and grab a few hours of sleep. Poole called the front desk and asked for a 5 a.m. wake up call. He wanted to be near the Hardy home before anyone left for the day. Poole strongly suspected that Fenton or his sons would lead him to Michael Walsh, and he intended to do whatever necessary to accomplish what he was hired to do; even if it meant taking out a few Hardys, too. Torrance Poole woke up with the ringing of the phone. He quickly dressed and drove directly to the Hardy home. He watched the two women leave the house early. He was not interested in them. During the night, he’d devised a plan. Once he put it into action, the Hardy men would willingly lead him to Walsh. * * * That same morning, Frank made his way down the back staircase and into the kitchen. Though he’d slept well, lack of sleep the previous night left him feeling not very well rested. A note on the kitchen table announced that his mother and aunt had already left the house to run some errands. Seeing no sign of his father or brother, Frank decided to make breakfast. He was setting the frying pan on the stove to preheat when a noise outside the back door caught his attention. Frank turned off the stove, disengaged the security alarm and stepped out onto the small back porch deck. Seeing nothing amiss, he turned to go back inside when his head suddenly exploded with pain. Poole quickly threw the youth over his shoulder and carried him to his van, which he’d pulled in the driveway. ‘Smooth as silk’, purred the killer as he drove down Elm Street.
