Dave Kelhoyouma made his way to Stan Lomayaktewa’s house in record time.  Dave’s friend lived in a log cabin in the Yellowjacket Canyon, about 20 miles north of Cortez.  Dave had a bad feeling that something was very wrong in Mesa Verde National Park and there was no way his sister was going to be hurt by it all.

“Stan!” Dave pounded on the door of the cabin.

“Dave?  What in the world is wrong?” Stan asked, looking into his best friend’s angry face.

Dave quickly related the events that had transpired since their arrest the previous morning.  Stan listened intently, a frown creasing his forehead.  As Dave concluded, Stan ran a hand over his face and shook his head.

“Unbelievable!” Stan finally said.  “Catherine…God knows, Cat wouldn’t hurt a fly!  How can Longtooth even consider something so ludicrous?

“Could Bayer have anything to do with this?” Stan questioned, peering into Dave’s dark eyes.

“I may not like Chris Bayer or his relationship with Cat,” Dave answered with a shake of his head, “but he’s no killer either.”

“Look,” Stan advised, “get your sister a good lawyer just in case.  I can’t imagine the county D.A. prosecuting on such thin evidence, but it’s better to be safe.”

Dave nodded as he headed for the door.

“Meanwhile, I’ll keep my eyes and ears open and mingle with the locals,” Stan offered.  “Maybe I’ll pick up something.”

* * *

The earlier phone call had left him very upset.  Things could fall apart if they weren’t careful.  It had all started out so easy, but was now growing more complicated by the day.

He wasn’t sure what would happen to the whole operation, but he did know one thing – Frank and Joe Hardy would have to be silenced.

* * *

Billy Moss pulled his jeep to rest on a grassy knoll just outside of town.  He got out and watched the black van that had been following him park behind his own vehicle.  He knew from their expressions, that the two teenagers walking towards him were determined to get some answers.

He glanced out over the hillside to the town of Durango below.  Truth was, he wanted answers too.  Maybe talking things out with these boys would help him sift through all the facts and clues.  He turned to greet the Hardy brothers.

“The Chief won’t like us meeting like this,” Billy grinned as he seated himself on a boulder. “Pull up a rock, boys.”

“What did the autopsy show?” Joe bluntly asked.

“You guessed right,” Billy answered.  “It looks like Mark was murdered.  He was stabbed and bled to death.”

“Do you think Catherine Laeche had anything to do with it?” Frank questioned.

Billy sighed. “I really don’t know, but my gut says no way.

“I don’t see any motive unless we’re all totally missing something here,” Billy continued.

“What if it wasn’t intentional?” Frank asked, getting an angry glare from his younger brother.  Frank ignored it.

“I mean,” he went on, “what if they had an argument or something, and he was accidentally stabbed?”

“Whoever thrust that blade into his chest was aiming to kill him,” Billy answered with a shake of his head.  He explained about the location of the stab wound, the kind of knife it was and what coroner Evelyn Saunders thoughts were.  He didn’t tell them about Mark being left-handed or the blade tip.  He decided to hold onto that information for the time being.

“But everyone says Mark was so well liked,” Joe offered.  “There’s no motive here; not for Catherine or anyone else.”

“That we know of,” added Frank.  Both Joe and Billy looked questioningly at the dark-haired youth.

“Did the sheriff check out where Mark lived?” Frank asked Billy.

“Probably,” Billy replied with a shrug of his shoulders.  “I would imagine that was standard procedure.”

“I wonder how thoroughly his place was searched,” Frank pondered.

“What are you thinking?” Billy questioned.

“I get it,” Joe piped in, “maybe there was more to Mark Campton than everyone thinks.”

“Sure,” Frank smiled, “even Catherine admitted that she didn’t know much about his personal life.  Seemed he kept to himself.”

“So we go check out Mark’s place, right?” Joe asked, anxious to do something physical.

“You can’t do that!” Billy exclaimed.  “How are you going to get in?”

“You don’t have to be a part of this,” Frank said, standing up to leave.  “We don’t want you to get into trouble.”

Billy eyed the two boys carefully.  “Uh-uh.  You guys are stuck with me, like it or not.”

Joe and Frank glanced at each other.  Billy watched the exchange.

“Okay,” Frank finally said, “but be warned.  We’ll do just about anything to get to the bottom of this…”

“Even if it means bending the law a little,” Joe interjected.

“Like ‘breaking & entering’?” Billy asked, raising his eyebrows apprehensively.

“Yes,” the Hardy brother’s answered in unison.
