“I spoke with a deputy,” Frank Hardy told the group of people assembled in Chris Bayer’s kitchen. “He’s sending someone over to talk to us, but said that officially, we have to wait twenty-four hours before Chris or Joe can be declared as ‘missing’." “What do we do? They could be in real trouble if this is related to Mark’s murder,” Catherine cried, her voice raw with emotion. “We’re not going to wait,” Frank declared. “Phil, I want you and Chet to stay here with Catherine. Talk to the deputy and tell him everything we’ve pieced together. “Meanwhile, I’ll take Biff and Luke with me,” the older Hardy boy continued. “We’re going to check out Dave’s friend and see if he’s been in the neighborhood with his gray truck recently." “Sounds like a plan,” Phil Cohen stated, patting Frank on the shoulder encouragingly. “Just be really careful,” Catherine advised. * * * The hospital staff rushed into action and the deputy guarding Billy Moss’s room was busy calling the sheriff’s office. Evelyn Saunders stood in the hallway outside Billy’s room. Her hand firmly planted across her mouth as tears streamed from her face, she couldn’t believe what she had just witnessed. She turned and glanced down the hall where the ‘medicine man’ had run. What was he doing in Billy’s room? Did he cause Billy to go into cardiac arrest? She was about to turn back when she spotted something on the floor. A small plastic bag; like a sandwich bag, only smaller. Evelyn knelt and picked it up just as Deputy Craig Dustin came back down the hall. “What’s that?” he asked the coroner. “I don’t know,” she replied. She opened the bag and was immediately assaulted by a strong odor. “Oh God! Its triph-oxide,” she cried, her face draining of color. “What?” “A poison; it’s made from a plant found on the mesa’s,” she quickly explained. She turned from the deputy and ran into Billy’s room. She told the doctor and nurses what she’d discovered. “That’s treatable if we can get him stable!” Dr. Wendell Owens shouted. The medical team went back to work and Evelyn went back to the hall to pray. * * * Sheriff Longtooth pulled his jeep to a stop in front of the sheriff’s office. He glanced at his watch. It was almost nine o’clock. Longtooth sighed; he felt like just driving home and going to bed. “That won’t get this mystery solved,” he admonished himself. He climbed out of the jeep and walked into the building, immediately wishing he hadn’t. Shouting voices could be heard all the way down the hallway and Longtooth had a bad feeling. He walked into the outer office of the department and couldn’t believe the pandemonium before him. “What in the blue blazes is going on in here?” The three deputies and two civilians in the room stopped their arguing abruptly and faced Longtooth. Immediately, they began directing their conversation to the sheriff. “Hold it!” the lawman shouted, raising both hands to silence the group. “Sagawi, explain this mess.” Deputy Vernon Sagawi stepped forward and explained, “Thayer and I just got back to the office when Deputy Watson told us he’d sent Deputy Rand Palemoon on a missing persons call. “Apparently, Bayer and his friend here,” Sagawi continued with a nod toward the two young men standing nearby, “were reported missing by Frank Hardy and Catherine Laeche.” Longtooth frowned as he peered at Chris Bayer and Joe Hardy. Both of them were dirty and the teenager had dried blood matted in his hair. Sagawi went on, “He’d no sooner told us, when the door bust’s open and in they walk with Dave Kelhoyouma.” “That’s right,” Joe shouted angrily, “but before we could say anything, this idiot,” he pauses and points accusingly at Deputy Mace Thayer, “grabs Dave and tells him he’s under arrest for killing Mark Campton!” Seeing the sheriff’s steely gaze fall on him, Thayer quickly explained, “You were going to put out a warrant anyway Sheriff, and I did read him his rights first!” Longtooth drew a hand wearily down his face before ordering everyone to have a seat. “Dave needs to…” Joe began protesting, but stopped as the sheriff strode up to him. Longtooth put his hands on the shoulders of the angry teen and looked intently into Joe Hardy’s deep blue eyes before he spoke. “I know we don’t necessarily like one another Mr. Hardy, but believe it or not, I want to find the truth behind all of this more than you do.” Joe swallowed and calmed himself as the sheriff continued. “Everyone will have his say, including Kelhoyouma. So, please have a seat.” Joe nodded silently and sat down beside Chris.
