Leroy Longtooth rubbed his bare chin and his black eyebrows creased into a perfect “v” above his dark brown eyes.  He sat in an interrogation room across the table from David Kelhoyouma, Chris Bayer and Joe Hardy.

The trio had told the local sheriff what had transpired in the past few hours, from the time Bull Byron had pulled the gun on Chris, to Dave’s finding them as they escaped from the cave under Balcony House.

He looked at Dave and said, “What about Stan Lomayaktewa’s involvement in this?  You know him; is it possible that he killed Campton?”

“We have known each other since childhood,” Dave answered with a shrug, “but money talks loudly to some people.  Stan likes to spend money.”

The sheriff of Montezuma County nodded.  “I don’t think this is limited to Lomayaktewa and Byron.  I believe there is at least one other person involved.”

Longtooth was about to continue when someone knocked on the door.  The lawman stood and answered the door.  He spoke briefly to the deputy outside, and then returned to the table.

“Catherine Laeche is here with two of Mr. Hardy’s young friends,” the sheriff stated, nodding in Joe’s direction.

“Thank you for calling her,” Chris said, having asked that the sheriff contact Catherine and let her know that he and Joe were okay.

“Apparently,” Longtooth faced Joe and folded his hands on top of the table, “you and your brother enjoy disobeying direct orders.  He and two of your friends have gone out to Yellowjacket Canyon.

“Stan’s house?” Dave questioned.

“Seems so,” Longtooth answered.

Joe paled.  He knew Lomayaktewa and Byron wouldn’t hesitate to kill Frank and their friends.  “Are you going to go after them?”

“Already doing just that.  There are two county deputies and two state troopers on their way to Lomayaktewa’s cabin,” the sheriff grinned slightly.  “Believe it or not Mr. Hardy, I do know how to do my job.”

Matoka Hrappowi knew he had little time to spare.  He drove his old SUV toward Mesa Verde National Park as fast as he dared.

“I still think we should just head north and get into Canada as fast as possible,” Bull Byron said, gripping the armrests.  “So we lose the merchandise in the cave; it’s no big deal.”

“But Bayer and that boy are a big deal,” Hrappowi snarled as he glanced at his partner.  “The kid should have died in the fire.  By now, Moss is dead; the only loose end is the other boy that was at Campton’s cabin.

“We have enough dynamite to blow the opening of the cave closed forever,” the old man continued, “and it will be loud enough to attract attention.”

“And we can just slip away while the sheriff and the fire department investigate the explosion,” Byron grinned, understanding his friend’s plan.

“Exactly,” Matoka replied.  “Even if they dig, the kid and Bayer will already be dead.

“The sheriff will be too busy to bother with what the dark-haired kid and his friends have to say.  Besides, they’ll be too busy grieving over Bayer and the blond kid,” he went on.

“By the time old Longtooth finds out about Stan and our association with him and Campton, we’ll be long gone!” Bull laughed.

On their way to the County Sheriff’s office in Durango, Frank Hardy had Biff Hooper stop at Chris Bayer’s apartment to check on Catherine and their friends.

Frank dashed inside and found a note from Catherine saying only that they were on their way to the sheriff’s office.

Frank took over driving and Biff moved into the back of the van and let Luke Martin sit in the front passenger seat as they headed for Durango.

They hadn’t gotten far out of Cortez, where Chris lived, when Frank spotted the Bronco.  He knew it was the same battered vehicle he’d seen in Yellowjacket Canyon; the same one that had pulled up to Stan Lomayaktewa’s cabin.

“I think we’re going to postpone our trip to the sheriff for a bit, guys,” the older Hardy said, slowing down so he could follow the Bronco unobserved.

“That the same SUV that was chasing us?” Luke asked, peering out the front windshield.

“I’m positive,” Frank answered.  “See if you can find the cell-phone in my back pack.  We’ll call the sheriff and let him know what’s going on here.  Hopefully, he’ll believe us.”

“Sheriff!  I’m beginning to think the whole county’s done gone mad,” exclaimed Deputy Rand Palemoon as Longtooth, Dave Kelhoyouma and Joe Hardy returned to the main office.

“What now?”

“Just took a call from a kid.  Said his name was Hooper,” the deputy explained.  “He said he and some friends are tailing a late model Bronco.”

“Could be Hrappowi’s truck,” the lawman considered.

“Sounds like it,” Palemoon continued.  “The kid said an old guy with long braids is driving and another big, muscular guy is with him.”

“The guy with braids could be the guy that knocked me out at Campton’s cabin,” Joe mentioned.

“The muscular guy sounds like Bull Byron,” Chris interjected.

“I believe Matoka Hrappowi might be our third party I started to tell you about,” the sheriff nodded.  He looked at Joe, “The man with the braids.

“Did the Hooper boy say where they were headed?”

“Yes, Sir,” the deputy replied. “They’re going to Mesa Verde.”

“They’ll go and check the cave!” Joe exclaimed.  “We’ll never get there in time to keep them from blowing up the cave!”

“They don’t realize what they’re doing,” Chris frantically stated.  “Before Bull pulled the gun on me, I’d taken some readings from our equipment.  If they blow up that cave, it will destroy Balcony House.”

“We need to go now!” Dave shouted.  Joe, Chris, Catherine and the others stared at the sheriff.

“I’m calling in a helicopter,” Longtooth stated as he reached for the telephone.  “That’s the only way we can get there in time.”

“Ah, Sir?” Palemoon warily called out.  “That wasn’t the only call.”

“What else?”

“Deputy Craig Dustin finally got through to us from the hospital.  Someone tried to kill Billy Moss!”
