"Luke? Luke! You need to get a move
on. You don’t want to be late your first day!"
Luke Martin cringed at the sound of his mother’s voice, but then smiled. ‘At least I got to pick a cool name this time!’ The 18-year-old thought. He chose Luke, as in ‘Luke Skywalker’. His favorite movies were the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy. His favorite character was really ‘Han Solo’, but the name didn’t work for him. He was 6 feet tall with dark brown hair and hazel eyes. ‘Maybe if I looked Swedish or something!’ Luke pondered, ‘I might have gotten away with Han.’ He ran down the stairs of the two-story house they were renting in the town of Bayport, New York. His mother was frying eggs as he entered the kitchen. He gave her a quick smile before taking his seat. "Thought a hearty breakfast might help you get going today," Susan Martin said, sliding two over-easy eggs onto the plate in front of Luke. "Thanks, Mom," he replied, "but I don’t think a good breakfast is going to make today any easier. I’m still gonna’ be the new kid. I’m always the new kid! It doesn’t help that I’m still stuck in 11th grade either." "That’s only because we moved so much last year," she responded, "It’s no fault of yours." "Your father thinks this is it," Susan smiled, "He really likes it here and he thinks we may be safe." "I’ve heard that before," Luke said with a sigh. "Mom, I’m sorry, but I gotta’ run or I’ll be late." Susan sadly watched as her son went out the back door. * * * "You are far too young to be Fenton Hardy, but you certainly fit the description I was given!" the tall, handsome gentleman exclaimed when 18-year-old Frank Hardy opened their front door. "You are looking for my father," Frank suggested, "Most people think we look a lot alike." Both Frank and his father, world famous private detective Fenton Hardy, had deep, mahogany brown hair and warm, brown eyes. They were only an inch different in height, but Frank was leaner than his father. "Chief Collig sent me over," the man explained, "My name is Tighndale Cassidy. The chief thought your father might be able to help me with a problem I’m having." "I’ll run and get Dad," offered a voice from the stairs behind Frank. The voice belonged to Frank’s year younger brother. Unlike his father and brother, Joe’s hair was fair and he had deep blue eyes. An inch shorter than Frank’s 6’ 1", Joe had a more muscular build like their father. "Great Joe," Frank replied, but then turned back to their guest, "I’m Frank and that was my brother, Joe. Why don’t you come inside, Mr. Cassidy? Dad will be with us in a minute." Before Frank had a chance to escort the man into the living room, Joe reappeared with Fenton Hardy in step behind him. Frank quickly made introductions and the group headed for the Hardy’s spacious living room. "Joe?" Mr. Hardy glanced at his younger son, "Will you ask Gertrude to put on some fresh coffee, please?" Joe nodded and went to the kitchen to find his aunt. Gertrude Hardy was Fenton’s older, unmarried sister. She lived with her brother’s family and was known to be peppery and opinionated. Despite her abrupt mannerisms, she deeply loved her brother and his family very much. She was especially proud of her two teenaged nephews. "Aunt Gertrude," Joe said, walking into the cheery, warm kitchen, "Dad would like some fresh coffee for our guest." "Too late," the tall, angular woman replied, "I’ve already got it started. You can’t live in this house for this many years and not know the routine when a potential client shows up! I’ll serve coffee and my fresh baked coffee cake shortly. Run along, now Joseph!" Joe gave his aunt a grin and quickly went back to the living room, hoping he’d not missed too much of the discussion. "I really don’t understand it at all," Mr. Cassidy was saying, "The properties aren’t special. They do offer a great view of the bay, which means a lot for my purposes, but they aren’t valuable." "What are your plans for the properties?" Fenton asked. "Some of them may be restored as apartments for senior citizens. Others will be torn down for extra parking and landscaping. Two particular houses, the last properties in the row, sit back away from the rest and are fairly close together. I may restore them for my own personal home or possibly a ‘Bed & Breakfast’ type inn." "I’m thinking about retirement soon and I love boating and fishing. Barmet Bay looks suitable for both." Mr. Cassidy explained. "There are great fishing holes along the shore of several of the islands," Joe interjected enthusiastically, "Frank and I fish out there sometimes." "Wonderful!" Tighndale Cassidy smiled at the exuberant youth, "Perhaps when your father solves this perplexing mystery for me, you and your brother can show me the best spots." Fenton gave Joe a cautionary glance as he addressed Mr. Cassidy once again, "What types of vandalism have you noticed, Mr. Cassidy?" "Please call me Tigh. To answer your question, the houses have been broken into, garbage dumped inside two of them," he stated, "but the worst damage has been broken windows and a fire set on the porch of one house." "Gracious! Sounds like the work of hooligans to me!" exclaimed Gertrude Hardy as she carried a tray into the room. Frank took the tray from his aunt and set it on the coffee table. "I’m inclined to agree, dear lady," Tigh smiled, "You must be Mr. Hardy’s lovely wife." Both Frank and Joe could hardly suppress their laughter. Aunt Gertrude was blushing! |
