"Fenton, be careful!" Laura
Hardy addressed her husband as he prepared to board his plane.
"It’s only a meeting, Love," Fenton chuckled, giving her a tender hug. "Yes, I know," she agreed, "and Frank was only on a surveillance job last night, but look what happened." "Yes," Fenton said, his tone more serious, "I’m not sure the boys should go back out there, but I’m sure I’d be unable to persuade them of that. They promised Tigh and they’ve assumed responsibility for the case." "They’re just like their father," Laura said, smiling slightly. "I’m very proud of them, you know?" Fenton stated. "They’re good boys," she acknowledged. "Just remind them to…" Fenton began. "Be careful," Laura finished, and then she kissed her husband goodbye. * * * "What took you so long? Mom called an hour ago!" Frank complained after he had changed into the clean clothes Joe had brought for him. "I had to go see Iola first," Joe replied quietly, sitting on the edge of the hospital bed. Frank suddenly remembered what day it was and he felt terrible. He glanced at Luke Martin. "Luke? Could you give us a sec?" Frank asked politely. Luke, feeling the tension between the two brothers, nodded and exited with a promise to wait in the hall. "Hey, Little Brother," Frank said tenderly, putting his hand on Joe’s tense shoulder, "I’m really sorry. I just remembered that it was Iola’s birthday. Of course you needed to spend some time with her today." "Frank?" Joe looked up into Frank’s compassionate brown eyes, "I told her about Vanessa. I felt…it felt like Iola understood. Is that crazy?" "No," Frank assured him, "I think Iola would be happy for you. I think she would want you to move on with your life." "I hope so," Joe said, then turned to Frank with a grin, "You’re pretty philosophical for an invalid. Maybe that head injury was a good thing, huh?" Frank playfully slapped Joe on the back of his head. "Let’s go find Luke," Frank said, still chuckling. * * * "So you never told me why you were so down this morning, Luke," Joe stated, glancing in the mirror of the van to catch a glimpse of Luke Martin in the back seat. "I had a fight with my dad, that’s all," Luke said with a more defensive tone than he planned. "It’s cool if you don’t want to talk about it," Joe responded, not sure what got Luke so upset, "I just wanted to help, if I can." Luke sighed, and felt his face flush as hot tears begin to burn his eyes. He quickly brushed them away, but not before the Hardy brothers noticed. "Luke," Frank began gently, "If there’s a problem, we might be able to help. It’s kind of what we do best." "Yeah," Joe added, "With our dad being a detective, we inherited this ability to, I don’t know, we just like to help people." Luke studied the two brothers. His instincts told him that they could be trusted. Didn’t they just say their dad was a detective? If he’s some kind of cop, then maybe he could even help Luke’s dad? "I don’t know why, but I feel like I can trust you guys," Luke started, brushing the tears from his eyes again. "Are you sure you want to hear this?" "We’re sure, if you’re ready to tell us," Frank said, exchanging a knowing glance with Joe, "Let’s take it inside. We can talk in the…" "Bedroom!" Joe finished, "I promised Mom I’d get you right to bed, Frank." Frank wrinkled his nose in disgust. "Fine," he said, "Let’s go to my room." * * * In the back of an old warehouse in Southport, Nicholas Garris sat staring at the folder in front of him that contained information his hired help had provided. He pulled out a color photograph and laid it on his desk. The handsome face staring up at him was too familiar. He was pulled away from his thoughts as the telephone rang. "Hello, Leviathan Corporation, Garris speaking." "Hello, Garris. This is Bianco," Max Bianco said into the telephone, "The Boss said I should call you and tell you about a situation up here in Bayport." "I’m well aware of what’s going on in Bayport," Garris stated with irritation into the phone mouthpiece. "Oh?" Bianco was surprised, "You already know about the tie between Fenton Hardy’s kid and the Morgan kid?" Garris picked up the picture on his desk, "What are you talking about? What does this have to do with the Cassidy property on Woodland Road?" "Don’t know anything ‘bout any property," Bianco stated, "We were sent to find Morgan, that guy that escaped our detention center a year ago. We picked up his trail a month ago and traced him to Bayport. Anyway, we found out where he’s livin’ and we been keepin’ an eye on his kid." "And this Morgan kid is a friend
of Fenton Hardy’s son?" Garris asked, smiling, "How very
interesting."
