"We were sent by Garris to help you
two with a job," stated the gorilla-sized man that stood facing Max
Bianco. He led the man and his slightly smaller partner into the motel
room. Bianco studied the two hired thugs with interest. Both were huge,
well over 6-foot tall, and both had muscles on top of their muscles.
"Did Garris tell you about the job?" Max asked. "He said we were to kidnap a couple kids," the gorilla, named Earl Reese, replied. "This is Morgan’s son and the kid with him is named Joe Hardy," Bianco stated, handing Reese the photo he and Diller had taken earlier. Reese studied the picture, and then handed it to his partner, a bald guy named Bob Weaver. Bianco’s two-way radio crackled and Diller’s voice came through, "The Hardy kid and Morgan’s boy picked up another dark-haired kid at the hospital. They’re all three at a house on the corner of High and Elm Streets." "Stay posted there and let me know if they leave," Max said to his partner, "Any idea who the other kid is, Diller?" "I ain’t positive, but I think he was with the blond kid at the gas station," Diller replied. "We’ll go relieve this Diller guy and take care of the kids," Reese said, moving toward the door, "That way, you guys can take care of your, ah, other business." "Fine," Bianco agreed, but moved close to face Reese, "but we get credit for finding Hardy’s kid. Be sure to tell Garris." * * * Gertrude Hardy turned and saw Tigh Cassidy gazing at her. She felt her face flush red and she quickly turned away. At 55 years old, she knew her chances for romance were limited at best, but she had been attracted to this man from the moment she met him. Was the look she had just seen in his eyes, mutual interest? "I believe you are right about this room," Tigh said softly, not wanting to disturb the feelings that were almost visible in the air, "The lighting is beautiful." He turned to look at the woman. "This will sound presumptuous, but I’m too old to move slowly when it comes to matters of the heart," Tigh continued, facing Gertrude, "I find you very attractive and I’d be honored if you’d accompany me for dinner this evening." "Well," Gertrude fiddled with the handle of her small handbag, "I suppose that would be alright." "Excellent!" Tigh smiled brightly, "Where do you recommend? After all, you are more familiar with this town than I." Gertrude told him of a small Italian place not far from where they were. "Shall we go, my lady?" Tigh asked, carefully taking Gertrude’s arm. "I like pet-names and nick-names. I feel they make a relationship very personal. How do you feel about me calling you Trudy?" * * * "Luke," Frank Hardy looked into Luke Martin’s hazel eyes, "Let Joe and me talk all this out, then we’ll sleep on it. Can you come over tomorrow afternoon, say around two o’clock?" "Yeah," Luke said, nodding his head, "I better get home anyway. Dad will have cooled down by now and hopefully he’s not planning on us moving immediately." "I’ll drive you home," Joe offered, but then turned to Frank, "Mom went right over to the Red Cross office after dropping off Dad at the airport. I’m not sure when Aunt Gertrude will be here. Will you be alright?" "Yeah," Frank replied, "I’m feeling a little sluggish anyway. I’ll take a nap ‘til you get back. Turn on the burglar alarm when you leave." Joe and Luke headed out to the van while Frank quickly drifted off to sleep. * * * John Diller had returned to the hotel room to find Max Bianco in a foul mood. He decided the best way to perk up his partner was to get him back to their job. "Since those two mountains are dealing with the kids, what’s say we pay a little social call on David Morgan?" Diller suggested. Bianco looked at his partner, "For the first time since we’ve been paired up, you have a good idea." The two men headed out the door and climbed into the Monte Carlo. * * * "What’s wrong? This is the wrong way to my house," Luke nervously asked Joe Hardy, peering at the blond youth. "Someone’s following us," Joe stated, glancing quickly in the rearview mirror. "What? Are you sure?" Luke asked, looking back at another van in the distance. "That dirty, white van?" "Yeah," Joe replied, "It was parked along High street and has been following us since we left my house. Let’s lose these clowns." Joe began turning and darting down streets and alleys all over Bayport. Having lived here since he was a toddler, Joe knew the layout of the town by heart. He hoped his pursuers were from out-of-town and he’d quickly be able to shake them off their tail. * * * The black Monte Carlo pulled up across the street from the rental property where the Martin family lived. The car was parked in the driveway and there were lights on in the house. Max Bianco and John Diller cautiously
pushed fresh clips of ammo into their semi-automatic Taurus pistols.
Bianco carefully scanned the neighborhood. The late afternoon street was
deserted. They got out of the car and silently made their way to the back
porch of the house.
