"Hello, Morgan," Max Bianco
smiled at the terror in the man’s eyes.
"H-how did you find me, Bianco?" Dan Martin asked, trembling. "Let’s see. We traced you to Kentucky first. I believe you were Denny Morris, there. Then you moved your dear family to Alabama as the Davis Mathews family. As Dirk Meadows, you moved to West Virginia," Bianco used the tip of his gun to tick off the numbers on his fingers, "Finally, you became Daniel Martin and settled here in New York." "You have to be pretty stupid to think we wouldn’t be able to track you down, Morgan," John Diller sneered, "You are an embarrassment to your fellow Assassins." "I’ve never had the heart of an Assassin," Dan replied loudly, hoping and praying that Susan would hear and have a chance to escape, "I was blackmailed into joining with you by my own father." "Diller," Bianco said, keeping his gun trained on Dan, "Check the house. We know his kid’s not here, but we need to take care of his wife and the girl." "Listen, Diller, Bianco," Dan pleaded, "Take me, kill me, whatever you want, but leave my wife and son alone, please!" Bianco nodded his head to Diller, ignoring Dan’s desperate plea. Diller began searching the house. Susan heard voices downstairs. She was about to call out when she made out Dan’s voice. They had found them. Somehow, the Assassins had found them! Susan knew they would die, but if she hurried, she could save Hope. She slipped off her shoes and dashed to Hope’s room. She glanced around. It had a feminine look, but was void of anything personal. Would they guess it was a guest room? She lifted Hope’s frail body and carried her to her own bedroom. Susan pulled the panel off of the side of the waterbed frame and gently placed Hope inside. She kissed Hope’s forehead as the girl’s frightened eyes searched for reassurance in Susan’s face. Susan smiled at the girl, and then closed the panel, completely hiding Hope. She pulled the bedspread into place and moved to the vanity in the corner. She sat down and composed herself. Susan heard doors slamming and jumped when John Diller came marching into her room. He grabbed the woman by the arm and took her down to join her husband. "Where’s the girl, Morgan?" a voice asked from the basement, as Susan was being led down the stairs. She gasped as she saw her husband, tied to a kitchen chair. Dan’s face was bloody and battered. "She’s dead!" Susan spoke up, drawing Bianco’s attention. "We called her Hope, but she was too weak. She died in Alabama." "So where’s she buried, huh?" asked Bianco as Diller tied the woman to a second chair. "Along the side of the road, back in the woods," Dan said through broken teeth and swollen lips, "Couldn’t bury her anywhere else without a lot of questions." "Any sign of the girl?" Bianco asked his partner. "She’s not in the house," Diller replied, "and as bad as she was messed up, don’t suppose she went for a walk." "Let’s get this done, then," Bianco said, coming up in front of Susan. "Before you die, you might want to know that an associate of ours has your son, Bryan." Bianco smiled evilly as Susan’s eyes filled with tears. "Don’t worry your pretty, little head about it," Bianco continued, "We’ll train him well. He’ll make a wonderful addition to the Assassins." Ten minutes later, Max Bianco and John Diller climbed into the Monte Carlo. As it pulled around the corner out of sight, a black van pulled to a stop in the Martin’s driveway. * * * "Where’s Joe?" Frank Hardy asked, walking into the family’s kitchen, "He was supposed to wake me when he got home." Laura Hardy looked up at her eldest son. Frank still sported the bandage around his head that had been put on at the hospital, but otherwise, looked a lot better than he had the previous night. "Actually," Laura responded to Frank’s question, "I’m getting a bit concerned. If he was just dropping Luke off at home, he should have been back a long time ago." "Maybe I’ll give them a call," Frank suggested, "Joe has Luke’s number written on his notebook upstairs. I’ll bet they got to talking or maybe Joe went in to meet Luke’s family and lost track of the time." Frank turned and went up the back staircase to the second story of their century old house. * * * "This is the one I plan to live in and operate as an inn," Tigh Cassidy was explaining to Gertrude Hardy, as he escorted the woman through the huge, Victorian manor. "There are nine bedrooms and six full bathrooms. I’ll need to have an elevator installed and maybe enlarge the kitchen and dining areas, but I really think it could work. What do you think, Trudy?" "I agree," Gertrude smiled, "I love the big windows and the wraparound porch. I can picture red geraniums hanging in baskets over the banister. The porch is wide enough, you could put up several porch swings." "A woman with vision!" Tigh
laughed, "Trudy, my dear, you are going to be a great help to me.
You can ‘see’ beauty where it hasn’t been yet!" He pulled her
into a warm embrace. At first, Gertrude stiffened at the unexpected show
of affection, but then, gave in to the feelings she’d been harboring
all day. As they pulled slightly apart, Gertrude gazed into Tigh’s blue
eyes. ‘I think I’m falling in love,’ she thought, ‘Whatever will
my family think?’
