CHAPTER 31

The dirty, white van pulled up across from Luke Martin’s house, filling the space vacated by the Monte Carlo less than an hour ago. Like their predecessors, Earl Reese and Bob Weaver loaded their weapons and carefully checked the residential street for potential witnesses.

They exited the vehicle and walked toward the house, knowing the two boys had to be inside, because of the presence of the black van. Reese and Weaver closed in on the house, and Reese chanced a glance in the front window. He saw the Morgan boy weeping uncontrollably on the sofa, but there was no sign of the blond kid.

"Let’s go ‘round back and come in quietly," Reese ordered. "The Morgan kid’s not gonna to be a problem at all, but I don’t know where his friend is at. Keep your eyes peeled." Weaver nodded silently and they made their way into the back of the house.

Joe Hardy followed the muted thumping sound to the master bedroom. It was coming from the platform under the king size waterbed. He carefully removed the panel that allowed access to the heating unit under the bed.

Joe let out a soft gasp as he beheld the girl under the bed. He gently lifted her and laid her on top of the bed. Joe’s heart broke a he took in her scars, her twisted, pencil-thin limbs and her dark, brown, frightened eyes.

"You must be Hope," the younger Hardy said soothingly, "My name’s Joe. I’m a friend of Luke’s. You’ll be okay, Hope. Help is coming." Joe pulled off his letterman jacket and gently placed it over the trembling girl. "I’m going to check on Luke. I’ll be back as soon as I can."

Joe started for the door, but stopped. He turned back to the girl and looked at her once again. ‘What?’ he thought to himself, ‘What am I feeling here? Something weird…’ Joe shook his head and walked out of the room.

Biff Hooper and Chet Morton arrived at the Hardy home as quick as they could. Frank Hardy ran out the door and jumped into Biff’s Bronco. The trio took off for Luke Martin’s house.

Biff hadn’t driven more than two blocks on the main street of town, when sirens bore down on them. Biff pulled to the side of the road as two police cars, a crime lab van and an ambulance shot past them.

"I got a real bad feeling that those guys are going where we’re going," Frank stated, gripping the dashboard, "Let’s go Biff!"

The Gray Man was not happy to learn of Frank and Joe Hardy’s involvement with his current investigation. How did those two boys always manage to get into the thick of things without even trying?

Gray pulled strings all over Washington to get Fenton and himself on a Red-eye flight back to New York as soon as possible. The sooner they got to Bayport, the better.

Luke Martin never heard the two men as they silently moved in on him. By the time Luke sensed their presence, they were on top of him. He let out a brief cry before the butt of a pistol crashed against the side of his head.

Joe Hardy froze at the top of the stairs. At first, he thought the police had arrived, but he’d not heard any sirens. Then, before he could think of a course of action, a mountainous man glanced up at him from the doorway of the living room, and with a wicked grin, he raised a .45 handgun straight at Joe’s heart.

"Come on down here, kid," the mountain said in a voice that suggested he wasn’t going to take no for an answer.

Joe’s mind reeled with questions. Where were the police? Did this guy hurt Luke? Had he killed Luke’s parents? Would he come up and find Hope? For some reason, that last thought terrified Joe the most.

‘If I try to run up here, I’ll lead him right to Hope. She’s helpless. I can’t do that,’ Joe reasoned.

"I-I’m comin’ Mister," Joe said, raising his hands and playing his scared kid routine, "P-please d-don’t shoot me!" Joe hoped that he’d be able to disarm the man when he reached the bottom of the steps. Then he’d just need to wait for the police to get there.

Joe’s hope of easy escape came crashing down as a second mountain size man emerged from the living room with Luke’s unconscious form over his shoulder.

As Joe neared the landing, mountain number one lunged forward with more agility than Joe would have ever expected for a man of his size. He grabbed the collar of Joe’s shirt with his left hand and slammed the pistol in his right hand against Joe’s temple before the boy even realized what was happening.

Sirens filled the air as Reese and Weaver hurried out the front door. Afraid to be seen with the boys, Reese climbed into the Hardy’s van with Joe still over his shoulder. He dumped Joe between the seats and grabbed Luke off of Weaver’s back. He dropped Luke over Joe on the van floor.

"Get to our van," Reese hissed, "We’ll transfer them down the road."

In seconds, the police pulled up in front of the Martin’s house. There wasn’t another vehicle in sight along the quiet street.

Biff, having tailed the emergency vehicles closely, pulled his Blazer as close as the police allowed. Frank jumped out, but was disappointed and yet relieved, that his and Joe’s van wasn’t there.
