Chief of Police Ezra Collig ran a hand
through his thinning brown hair. They’d found the two bodies in the
basement, just as Joe Hardy had described to Officer Con Riley. As Joe
had assessed, it certainly appeared to be a classical execution. His
question was, where was Joe Hardy? Why had the boy taken off after Riley
had ordered him to stay put until the police arrived?
Although he’d never admit it out loud, Frank and Joe Hardy were good detectives. They were well trained by their father, Fenton. Ezra didn’t like the boys being involved in such a dangerous line of work at their ages, and that often caused him to be gruff with them. He wondered now if Joe was possibly chasing a lead. Did the murderer return? Was Joe chasing him down or, worse yet, had the murderer returned and caught the boys off guard? "Riley," Collig growled, "Let’s get the upstairs searched. If Joe or the Martin boy were able, we would have heard from them by now. They may be tied up someplace in the house." Con Riley confirmed the order and took two other officers with him up the steps of the house. Con’s stomach felt sour as he began a thorough search of the bedrooms. He knew what the Chief wasn’t saying. If the killer had returned to the scene and found Joe and Luke, he would have probably killed them both. * * * Tigh Cassidy parked his Audi in front of the Hardy home. He stepped out of the car, and quickly opened the opposite door for Gertrude. He escorted the lady to the front porch. "I’ve had a wonderful day, Trudy dear," Tigh smiled, his pale blue eyes sparkling, "I do hope we’ll be able to do this again, very soon." "Tigh, now I’m going to be the one who’s presumptuous," Gertrude said, "but the day doesn’t have to end just yet. Why don’t you come in and join me for coffee?" Tigh accepted and Gertrude opened the door. She led the man into the kitchen and put on a fresh pot of coffee. Moments later, Laura Hardy came into the kitchen, having heard the sound of their arrival. She sighed when she saw Gertrude and Mr. Cassidy. "Laura?" Gert asked, "Is something wrong?" "I was hoping you were Joe or Frank," she answered. She sat at the table with the couple and began filling them in on the events of the afternoon and evening. "This is my entire fault," Tigh stated, "If I hadn’t agreed to let those boys guard my property, none of this would have happened. How can I begin to apologize?" Laura shook her head, "It’s no one’s fault, Tigh. I always feel guilty when the boys get hurt on one of their cases, but it doesn’t change anything. There is no way I could keep them from doing the work they love." * * * Earl Reese pulled the Hardy’s van to a stop along a dirt road just off of Shore Road. Bob Weaver pulled their van directly beside it. The men worked silently, tying up the boys. Bob used nylon rope to secure the wrists and ankles of both the boys. Reese, meanwhile, secured their mouths with navy blue bandanas. Making sure there were no other cars in sight, the two men carried the boys to the white van. * * * "Chief! Chief Collig!" Frank dashed across the Martin’s front lawn toward the Police chief as he stood on the front porch. "Chief Collig?" Frank asked, climbing the steps, "Is my brother around here?" Collig glanced at the dark-haired youth that stood before him. He’d heard about Frank’s ‘accident’ the previous night, and couldn’t help but wonder if this current tragedy had anything to do with it. "Joe’s not here, but he called us," Collig told Frank, "Perhaps you can shed a little light…" "Chief! You gotta see what Riley found!" yelled Officer Rameraz. Collig ran back inside the house with Frank close behind. The chief figured it was pointless to try and make Frank stay behind. Officer Riley was standing at the door of one of the bedrooms. His face was an _expression of bewilderment. "What’s going on, Riley?" Collig asked. "You have to see this for yourself," Riley answered. The chief pushed past the officer and entered the room. There on a king size waterbed laid a young girl. Her dark eyes were bright with apprehension. Collig moved closer to the girl. "That’s Joe’s coat," Frank offered, peering over Collig’s shoulder at the blue letterman jacket that covered the dark-haired girl. "Joe was definitely here and, knowing my brother, there’s no way he would have left her here alone if he could have helped it." Collig frowned. He suspected that
Frank was right, but if he was, it meant Joe Hardy, and probably the
Martin boy as well, were in the hands of a murderous, professional hit
man.
