CHAPTER 31

Luke Martin found an empty seat near the windows of his third period World Cultures class. He sighed as he felt several sets of eyes ‘checking him out’. Although Bayport High was the fourth high school Luke had attended in the past year, he still wasn’t used to being the new kid.

The teacher wasn’t in the classroom yet, allowing the students to talk and laugh among themselves. Luke sat back and assessed them. ‘That one’s a typical nerd. Hey, she’s pretty cute. Jock, definitely a jock,’ he thought, glancing about the room. Since everyone seemed to have lost interest in him, Luke turned his gaze out the window.

The trees were almost bare, except for a few brown leaves that were struggling to hold on ‘til the bitter end. He’d never lived this far north and wondered if there would be a lot of snow in this area. The squeaking of the desk next to his own broke into Luke’s thoughts. He turned casually to see his neighbor.

The blond haired boy was built like an athlete. ‘Another jock,’ Luke thought, ‘but with his blond hair, he could get away with a name like Han.’ The guy was in an animated conversation with a pretty ash-blond girl in the next row. Luke caught himself smiling as he watched the girl’s obvious admiration for the jock.

Another girl, an attractive redhead, spoke to the blond girl, tearing her attention away from the jock. The guy pulled out his history book and a notebook, getting ready for the class to begin.

Joe Hardy had been telling his girlfriend Vanessa Bender about their new mystery. Joe and his brother often helped their father with his detective work, as well as take on cases of their own. When Beth Webber starting asking Vanessa about an up-coming girl’s basketball game, Joe turned his attention to his own desk. He longingly glanced out the window, hoping the predicted snow had started falling.

Joe realized that the kid sitting next to the windows was new. He had been in Joe’s first period English class. He tried to remember the guy’s name so he could say hello.

"Hey, your name’s Luke, right?" Joe asked as the name came to him. He extended his hand to the boy, "I’m Joe Hardy. Saw you first period, but you were too far away to introduce myself."

"Nice to meet you, Joe," Luke smiled, shaking Joe’s hand, "My name’s Luke Martin." Luke felt there was something really sincere about this guy, Joe. It’s like he really was glad to meet him.

While they had been meeting each other, Larry Gilmore strode into his World Cultures class. "Alright people, let’s settle down and get to work here!" he called out. His eyes fell on Joe Hardy and an unrecognized youth. Joe was talking to the new kid, which didn’t surprise Mr. Gilmore at all. Joe Hardy was a very friendly, outgoing kid.

"Mr. Hardy?" Mr. Gilmore called out as the class all turned to look at Joe, "perhaps you’d like to introduce the rest of us to your new friend?" Luke felt his face flush red at the sudden attention, but Joe didn’t seem bothered. He stood up and motioned for Luke to join him.

"Fellow Bayport history students and esteemed teacher," Joe dramatically stated, grinning at his classmates, "I’d like for you to meet Luke Martin. This is his first day with us and I think we need to show him we’re glad he’s here." With that, Joe led the class in a round of applause, while several students shouted greetings of welcome.

As they sat back down, Joe gave Luke a warm smile. "You’re going to need a notebook for this class," Joe warned Luke, "Here’s some paper for today." Luke thanked Joe and opened his textbook, thinking that he might like Bayport after all.

After the boys had left for school, Fenton Hardy had continued his interview with Tighndale Cassidy. The real estate developer had been pleased that Fenton Hardy’s sons would be available to keep surveillance on his properties for a few days.

At first, Tigh balked at the boys helping, afraid they were too young for such a job. Even Mr. Hardy’s assurance of the boys’ experience in such matters didn’t convince the man. Only after Gertrude Hardy offered her opinion of her nephews’ abilities, did the man agree to allow the boys to take on the task.

Once Mr. Cassidy found out that the handsome woman wasn’t Fenton’s wife, but rather his single sister, his flirtations with her were obvious, starting with him inviting Gertrude to join them in their discussion.

"Good morning, Dear," Susan Martin greeted her husband as he came into the kitchen carrying a slight, dark-haired girl. He placed the girl in a wheelchair that sat beside the kitchen window. He carefully strapped her into the seat and gently kissed her forehead. She looked up at him and smiled.

"How is Hope this morning?" Susan asked, looking at the girl. Hope’s dark eyes sparkled and she smiled when she met Susan’s gaze.

"Hope is content, Sarah," Daniel Martin stated, getting a frown from his wife, "that’s the most we can expect."

"Honey, I’m Susan now," she said gently. "We need to use the new names all the time, or we’ll get careless."

"You’re right." Dan replied, "How was, um, Luke this morning?"

"Nervous," she said, "He didn’t eat. I hope we can stay this time. It’s been really hard on him."

"It’s been hard for us all," Dan said evenly, "Can’t he look at Hope? She’d be dead if... anyway, there was no way I was going to allow her to die."

"That’s because you never were like them, Dan," Susan responded, "You are a good man."
