Ezra Collig and Frank Hardy walked into the
police station together. Chief Collig ushered Frank down a set of stairs
to the small crime lab in the basement.
"Mc Cann," grunted the chief to a tall, thin man, about 40 years old. He wore glasses and a white lab coat. "I hope you have something for me." "Actually, I finished with your baseball bat, Chief," the man responded in a whiney, nasal voice, "and I just finished typing up my report." He handed Collig a sheaf of paper. "Translate all of this," ordered Collig. "Well, Sir, the DNA from the blood, tissue and hair match your victim, a guy named Franklin J. Hardy," Mc Cann explained glancing at Frank with a frown as Frank coughed and looked uncomfortable. Collig looked up from the paper and quickly introduced Mc Cann to the older Hardy boy. "I should have guessed since you’re wearing that attractive band aide on your head." Mc Cann added with a grin. Frank self-consciously fingered the gauze around his head. "There is good news. I was able to pull two clear prints from the bat, also," Mc Cann stated, "One was a thumb print that matched a local boy named Benjamin Fielding, 23, a high school drop-out with a record. He’s been charged with robbery and assault. Served a two-year sentence here in Bayport for stealing cars." "I remember Buzz Fielding. What else?" the chief asked. "The other print was an index finger. Its owner is one Jameson Ford, no convictions, but is known to hang out with the Fielding fellow," Mc Cann said, "He was picked up once for purse snatching, but the old lady couldn’t identify him." "We need to visit these guys," Frank quickly said, looking at the chief, "They might be able to finger Garris! He’s got to be the one that hired them!" * * * Joe Hardy’s entire body throbbed with pain. He was tied securely to a hard wooden chair in Nicholas Garris’ office. Unable to stretch or move his battered body, it was stiff and sore now. He was also exhausted, but too uncomfortable to even doze off in the chair. The two hired thugs and Garris had left the office for a brief period several hours earlier. Joe had heard a gun shot and realized, with some guilt, that the man with the broken arm had probably been killed. The other one was probably doing some errand for Garris. As for the man himself, he worked busily at his desk most of the morning and into the afternoon. Joe let out a soft groan without realizing it. It startled him; it was the first sound he’d made since being recaptured. He looked at Garris and saw the Assassin smiling. "You have to be quite uncomfortable by now, Mr. Hardy," Garris rose from his chair and knelt in front of Joe, "Are you hungry? Tired? Perhaps you’re thirsty? I’m sure your friend Bryan is too. Oh, that’s right; you know him as Luke. Please forgive me." Joe refused to respond to Garris, though the mention of food and water made Joe realize he hadn’t eaten since breakfast the day before, and he couldn’t even remember the last time he’d had something drink. "I’m not at all sure why my superiors want you alive," Garris commented, firmly holding Joe’s chin in his hand, "I would have preferred a slow, painful death for you. You and your brother have been a rather nasty thorn in our flesh for too long." "Alas, I must follow orders," Garris continued, rising to his feet, "But what to do with you while I fetch some nourishment? You can’t be trusted to be left on your own." Garris stood and gazed at the blond boy for several seconds. "The only way I can leave you is to kill you," Garris finally said, pulling a large hand gun from his desk drawer. He walked up to Joe and placed the tip of the muzzle against the boy’s forehead. "But my Boss wouldn’t like it if I killed you so, I’ll just have to render you unconscious." Garris raised the pistol and brought it hard across Joe’s left temple. * * * Fenton Hardy and Arthur Gray stopped at the Bayport police station, just as Frank was coming out the doors. "We were coming to check the lab report on the bat," Mr. Hardy stated, smiling at Frank, "but it looks like you beat us to it!" Frank smiled back and quickly briefed the two men on the forensic results. "Chief Collig sent Officers Riley and O’Donnell to pick up Buzz Fielding and Jamey Ford for questioning," Frank added, "What did you two find out?" "Struck out, unfortunately," Fenton replied with a shake of his head. Frank and Joe had both followed enough dead-end leads to know how Mr. Hardy was feeling. "Dad," Frank offered, "If they had wanted Joe or Luke dead, they would have killed them at the house. Joe’s alive and we’ll find him." "I’m usually the one encouraging you," Fenton smiled at his son, "Thank you for the reminder." The Gray Man drove in silence, knowing that Frank was correct in his theory. The Assassins most definitely wanted the younger Hardy alive; but to comment on that information, would give away the fact that the boys had helped the Network in the past. * * * Tigh Cassidy and Gertrude Hardy brought their purchased chicken meal into the Hardy kitchen. Laura Hardy heard the couple and soon joined them, setting places on the table for Fenton and Frank as well. Within minutes, Gray dropped the Hardy men off at their home, while he headed for his motel room. He would check with his people to see if they’d turned up anything new. As the Hardys and Mr. Cassidy ate lunch, little conversation occurred; each person was well aware of the empty chair at the far end of the table; the chair where Joe should be sitting.
