"Gert! Gertrude! Are you alright?"
Fenton Hardy asked franticly, as he arrived on the scene of the fire. He
caught sight of his sister and Tigh Cassidy as soon as he and Frank
pulled up to the fire trucks.
"I’m fine, Fenton," Gertrude replied, embracing her brother. "But it’s so dreadful! That beautiful house is in ruin now!" "Do you have any idea what happened Mr. Cassidy?" Frank asked, watching the firefighters dousing the blaze. "No. I have to assume it was the same vandals that have been plaguing the property since I bought it," the man sadly replied. "Tigh," Mr. Hardy said, "If it’s any consolation, the police have one of the kids in custody and they know who has been giving the orders to vandalize the place." "That’s encouraging news, Mr. Hardy!" Tigh replied with a smile. The man then frowned, "But what of your son? Any news?" "Actually," Fenton answered, "We believe the vandalism is tied to Joe’s abduction. We need to head back to the police station to ask a few questions of the kid in custody. Hopefully, the answers will lead us to Joe." * * * As the Hardy men returned to town to question Jamey Ford, the Fire Chief approached Ezra Collig. "Chief Collig?" Ed Painter called out. Chief Collig had been talking with Tighndale Cassidy, but quickly turned to the Fire Chief. "What do you have for me, Ed?" the chief asked. "The place was purposefully torched, as you suspected," Painter answered, "There was a gasoline can found inside the structure. That, ah, wasn’t all we found. Maybe you should come and see for yourself." Collig followed the man to the rear of the house. The pair entered through the back door and Painter led the chief through to the front room. Collig stared at the two charred bodies on the floor. "Did they die of smoke inhalation?" "Don’t think so, Sir," Painter led Ezra near one of the bodies. "This guy’s been shot. Don’t know about the other one yet." * * * "Did you tie up my loose ends, Mr. Reese?" Nicholas Garris grinned at the mountain sized thug that stood before him. "Yeah," Reese replied nervously, "So gimme what’s owed me so I can get outta here." "Certainly," Garris replied. He pushed a large padded envelope across the desk toward the man. Earl Reese reached out for the package and instantly realized his mistake. He had instinctively reached with his right hand, the same hand he drew his gun with. As the bullets from Garris’ gun tore into his body, Reese wished he hadn’t been so greedy. He was dead before he hit the floor. "Now, Mr. Reese," Garris grinned wickedly, "All my loose ends are taken care of." * * * As Fenton and Frank exited the car and started into the police station, Arthur Gray pulled up behind Fenton’s car. He called out to the Hardys and ran toward them. "We need to get to Southport right away!" the Gray Man stated, "My people intercepted a new transmission from the Assassins." "There’s a guy in here that can tell us where Joe is! We’ve got to question him!" Frank replied, only wanting to find his brother. "I know where Joseph is, Frank," Gray responded, "That’s what I’m trying to tell you. If we don’t hurry, the Assassins will take Bryan Morgan and your brother out of the country. Then we’ll have a very difficult time tracking them down." "Lead the way, Gray!" Fenton cried, squeezing Frank’s shoulder and dashing for the car. * * * "You think Hope could be your dead girlfriend?" Luke Martin asked, wondering if maybe Joe had been hit on the head one time too many. "Think about it, Luke! Garris said your dad built the bomb that blew up our old car," Joe explained, "But Frank and I didn’t set the bomb off. Iola did! She got to the car before me…" Joe paused, the image of the explosion vivid in his mind. "I just can’t believe my father could be involved with these people," Luke shook his head, "Our whole life was a lie! I wonder if my mom knew the truth?" "I don’t think your dad was a bad person, Luke," Joe said gently, "If he rescued Iola from the Assassins; that says a lot. He put his own life on the line to save her." Luke shook his head and looked at Joe. "I’m sorry I got you involved in all of this, Joe. All you were doing was being a friend." "Its okay," Joe replied with a
shrug, "I have a certain knack for finding trouble and getting stuck
in the middle of it. It’s like I wear a sign that says, ‘I’m Joe
Hardy. Kidnap me’."
