CHAPTER 31

"My people are moving in on the warehouse as we speak," Arthur Gray stated, racing toward Southport.

"You believe Joe and the Martin boy are still there?" Fenton Hardy asked.

"One of my best men intercepted a message from Garris to the Assassin’s headquarters," Gray explained, "He specifically mentioned the Morgan boy and referred to a ‘bonus package’, which I assume is Joe. The Assassins are rerouting the two men that killed Morgan and his wife. They are now heading back to Southport to pick up the two boys. My people are trying to intercept them now. Fortunately, they were almost in Canada, so we should easily beat them to the warehouse."

"How do you plan on getting into the warehouse, Mr. Gray?" questioned Frank from the back seat of the sedan, "If Garris suspects anything, he’ll kill the prisoners, and then kill himself. Isn’t that how the Assassins work?"

"We will have to get your brother and his friend out without letting Garris know we’re there."

"Such devastation!" Gertrude Hardy sighed, gazing at the ashes that had once been an elegant Victorian house. She and Tigh Cassidy strolled along the perimeter of the property.

"It’s not the end of the world, my dear Trudy," Tigh smiled, "I needed to tear down some of the structures for parking anyway."

"Still," Gertrude said with a slight chuckle, "couldn’t they have torched one of the ugly houses?" Tigh laughed.

"Trudy," Tigh began, becoming serious again, "it will take a considerable amount of work, but I’m more determined than ever to create an inn here. Maybe I can even combine the two biggest houses in the far lots. They would work beautifully. I can construct a covered causeway between them."

"Yes!" Gertrude agreed, "With windows facing the bay. It would be lovely!"

"I have but one request of you, dear lady," Mr. Cassidy gazed deeply into Gertrude’s dark brown eyes, "I simply can’t do this alone. I need someone with your vison by my side. Promise me you will stay with me through the entire project?"

"Well…" Miss Hardy hesitated.

"The truth is," Tigh continued, "I would ask you this very day to marry me, but I feel I need to provide a home for you first. So I guess I’m asking you to be my wife, eventually, once the inn is finished."

"I-I don’t know, Tigh," Gertrude stammered, "We’ve only known each other a week!"

"I realize that, my dear," Tigh agreed, "but we’re not twenty-year olds with a long future before us. I know that I love you, Trudy, and I’m not even asking for an answer right now. If you’ll agree to help me through this project, I’ll then ask you again, properly."

Mentally pushing aside the protests of pain his body was screaming at him, Joe Hardy crawled around in the make-shift prison Nicholas Garris had put him and Luke Martin in. It had taken several hours to get loose of the bonds around his wrists and ankles. Finally succeeding, Joe and Luke were now searching for a way out of the supply closet.

Feeling frustrated, the younger Hardy glanced at the door of the closet. Through the crack in the door frame, Joe’s eye caught sight of the bar that held the door closed and frowned. It certainly wasn’t the 4x4 board that had been across the door before. Whatever it was, it was much smaller than the heavy board that had kept Luke prisoner earlier.

With renewed hope, Joe scoured the floor for something he could use as leverage. In the far corner, Joe discovered several thin strips of stainless steel, about the thickness of a ruler and roughly 5 feet long. Joe then pushed a large metal drum up to the door.

"What are you doing, Joe?" Luke asked, having watched his friend for several minutes.

"Hopefully," Joe replied, ‘I’m getting us out of here. Garris is here by himself now. It’s two to one. If we wait, more Assassins will probably show up. Someone must be coming to get us or Garris would have taken us away himself."

"But he still has a gun," Luke said, worry clouding his hazel eyes.

"But we have surprise on our side too," Joe replied, giving Luke a confident grin. "Garris thinks I’m half dead. He’s underestimated the famous ‘Hardy resilience’. I think we can beat him, Luke, but we’ve got to hurry."

Joe quickly began forcing the steel strip through the door crack, between the cross bar and the drum. He feverishly maneuvered the strip, pushing on it and trying to raise whatever was barring the door.

Mustering all his strength and gritting his teeth against the pain that wracked his body, Joe pushed down on the steel strip. Luke saw Joe straining and quickly added his own muscle power to the task. Just when both boys had reached the end of their endurance, Joe felt the bar give and slip from the iron eyelets and crash to the floor.

Joe thought his heart had stopped as the sound of the metal bar Garris had placed through the eyelets echoed off the warehouse walls. ‘Not a chance Garris didn’t hear that!’ Joe thought, quickly pushing the drum away from the door, ‘Garris used a metal barrier on purpose, just so he would hear us if we tried to escape!’

Joe swayed slightly as a wave of dizziness washed over him. ‘Don’t pass out now, Hardy,’ he admonished himself, gripping the edge of the drum.

Joe felt Luke take his arm. He glanced up and gave the other youth a quick smile, "Let’s get outta here, Luke!"
