Luke Martin made his way into the
cafeteria of Bayport High and looked around. He grabbed a tray and made
his way through the line quickly because most of the students were
already sitting at tables. He glanced around and noticed that the kids
were divided into little clique groups, all absorbed in their own little
worlds.
He saw an isolated table in the corner and started walking towards it, when he heard someone calling out his name. He looked around nervously and recognized Joe Hardy waving to him. "Come on, Luke," Joe called out, "we’ve got room here!" Luke sighed with relief and walked toward Joe’s table. He over heard Joe telling his friends, "...his name is Luke Martin. He’s in my Lit and World Culture classes." Luke offered a smile to the assembled group. The only one he recognized besides Joe was the pretty girl Joe had been talking to in history class. Luke sat next to Joe. "Guys," Joe began, "This is Luke. Luke, these are some of the greatest people in all of Bayport. That’s Chet Morton across from you, then Biff Hooper, Tony Prito and Phil Cohen on the end. The lovely lady to my left is my girlfriend, Vanessa Bender." The group greeted Luke warmly with handshakes and welcomes. Just then, Luke felt a hand clamp on his shoulder. He glanced up to see a dark-haired guy and a pretty honey blond girl behind him. "Giving away our seats again, Joe?" "You know there’s always room for you!" Joe grinned as Frank Hardy and Callie Shaw sat down on the other side of Luke. "Luke, I’d like for you to meet my best friend Frank, who just happens to be my big brother, too!" Frank shook hands with Luke and Joe introduced him to Callie. "Welcome to Bayport, Luke," Frank said. "I’m sorry that you had to make friends with Joe first," added Callie with a teasing twinkle in her eye, "Please believe me when I say that not all Bayporters are as crazy as Joe." "He might be a bit crazy," Vanessa defended her boyfriend, "but you won’t find anyone more friendly, helpful or caring." "Thanks, ‘Ness," Joe said, putting an arm around Vanessa, "at least someone at this table cares about my delicate self-esteem!" Chet and Biff both burst out laughing, almost choking on their lunches. They had been friends of Joe and Frank for many years. "’Delicate self-esteem?’" Biff snorted, "You gotta be kidding Hardy! You have an ego the size of the Grand Canyon!" The group at the table erupted in laughter, including Joe himself. Luke chuckled with the rest, figuring that Joe was probably used to such teasing. He liked these kids. They all seemed to really enjoy each other’s company. ‘These are the kind of people I want to be friends with,’ Luke thought. The afternoon passed quickly and Luke was glad to see that Joe was in his Chemistry I class, too. They ended up sharing the same lab table, which suited Luke just fine. Now Luke was gathering his books to put them in his backpack. He had homework in English and Chemistry. As he headed out the door and began the long, cold walk to his house, he noticed Joe and his brother climbing into a black van in the student parking lot. Frank was behind the wheel as they drove to the exit. Luke looked up and waved to Joe in the passenger seat. "Hey, Luke," Joe called, rolling down the window, "Are you walking home? We can give you a lift." Luke hesitated. They seemed like great guys, but he really didn’t know them well. A crossing guard overheard Joe and saw Luke hesitate. "Look kid," the woman said with a smile, "You can trust these boys. They’ve been my neighbors since they were toddlers and they’re great kids. They’ll get you home safe." "Thanks, Mrs. Wheeler," Joe chuckled, "Now I know why I’ve never charged you anything for mowing your lawn all these years!" Assured that the Hardy brothers were okay, Luke climbed inside the van. Susan Martin frowned as she watched her 18-year-old son climb out of an unfamiliar black van. Luke waved to the two boys in the van as it pulled away. * * * At the table that evening, Fenton Hardy filled the boys in on the rest of his conversation with Tigh Cassidy, as they enjoyed a delicious meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans, prepared by their mother and aunt. "I’m certainly glad you’re helping that nice man," commented Gertrude Hardy as she served wedges of juicy apple pie for dessert. "He certainly seemed to like you, Aunt Gertrude!" Frank grinned, then gave his brother a wink. "I’ll say," Joe continued the teasing, "I’ve never heard anyone gush on and on about your coffee cake as much as Mr. Cassidy did this morning!" Though Laura Hardy found her sons’ conversation amusing, she felt it better to stop it before Gertrude got too embarrassed. "I think that’s enough, boys," she said softly, looking them each in the eyes. Though their eyes continued to twinkle mischievously, they did as they were told. The phone suddenly rang and Mr. Hardy promptly answered it. "Gert, it’s for you," the elder Hardy couldn’t contain a playful grin, "its Tigh Cassidy!"
