"Gray?" a voice crackled over the
car radio, "Abels reporting in, Sir."
"Gray here; what’s going on, Abels?" the Gray Man asked into the radio’s mouth piece, as Frank and Fenton Hardy listened in. "We’re at the warehouse and have already scanned the building with our infra-sensors," Network agent Rijn Abels responded, "We see three people inside." "What’s an infra-sensor?" Frank asked the Gray Man. "A type of scanner that registers body heat," Arthur Gray replied, "Our armed forces have been using this technology for years. Its only recently become affordable to the homeland intelligence services." "It works on the same principle as the night-vision goggles I gave you and Joe for Christmas last year," added Mr. Hardy. "Three people," Gray pondered out loud, "It has to be Garris, Morgan’s boy and Joseph. That’s good. The other Assassins haven’t arrived yet." "Abels?" Gray said into the radio, "Where are the locations?" "Two are close together, about 40 feet from the back of the warehouse along the right hand wall," Abels answered, "The other one is close to the front, near the main entrance. The two in the rear are putting off intense heat, Sir." "The two in the back are obviously Bryan and Joe," Fenton concluded, "Is there a back entrance to this place?" "Two, but they’re not accessible," Gray replied, bringing his rented sedan to a stop near a steel gray non-descript building. The three men exited the car and walked toward an abandoned looking trawler docked nearby. * * * "Stay low in the shadows and follow me," Joe Hardy whispered to Luke Martin as the two boys slipped out of the supply closet. They began moving toward the back of the building, staying hidden in the darkness offered by the shadowy interior. "Mr. Hardy! Are you foolish enough to think you can get past me?" Nicholas Garris called into the darkness. He squinted, trying to see movement in the dark recesses of the vast room. He knew the only exit the boys could get out of was at the front of the building. He just needed to stay between the door and his escaped prisoners. "Shouldn’t we head for the door?" Luke whispered as the pair made their way deeper into the warehouse. "That’s what he’ll expect us to do," Joe replied in a hushed voice, "but there has to be a back door here somewhere. If we can find it without being discovered, we might have a chance to escape." Outside the building, Network agents kept their eyes focused on the Leviathan warehouse from the trawler. Gray, Fenton and Frank were escorted to a room where the infra-sensor was set up. "They’re moving!" Frank cried, seeing all three spots moving on the grid screen. "Joe and Luke are trying to get out!" "They’re likely to get themselves killed!" Gray growled, peering at the screen. "We haven’t got time to spare. All other exits are closed off. The boys are working themselves into a corner and Garris will shoot them down like cornered rats." Gray shook his head in frustration. Leave it to Joe Hardy to screw up his operation! Why couldn’t he just sit tight like a good, little captive and wait to be rescued? "I’m going in with your people, Gray," Fenton firmly stated. Gray nodded in acknowledgement, but when Frank started to follow, he spoke up. "Your father, yes, but you are merely a child, Frank," Gray said, "Stay and keep an eye on the monitor. Use the radio to keep us informed." Frank felt his face burning. Gray knew Frank couldn’t protest without Fenton getting suspicious. After all, Gray was right. Frank was too young to be a part of this operation, if he were just any 18-year-old. He stared at Gray as the man and his father left the trawler. Controlling his anger, Frank stared helplessly at the three dots on the screen, the distance between them becoming smaller and smaller. ‘I can’t just sit here!’ Frank thought, glancing at the other Network agents still in the trawler. He saw that they were all busy with their individual jobs. He quietly slipped past them and made his way onto the dock. Frank dashed along the pier, staying in the shadow of the building. As he rounded the edge of the warehouse, he glanced back in time to see his father and several Network agents heading for the front door. Frank ran to the rear of the warehouse. No agents were in sight and Frank quickly assessed why. Both rear doors were sealed shut with heavy chains and pad locks. Even if he picked the lock, it would take too long, Frank thought. He looked around frantically for another means of entry. A smile crossed Frank’s face as he saw the gap around a piece of plywood. Someone placed the plywood over a damaged piece of the metal structure. The metal wall beneath the plywood was crimped as if it had been hit by a vehicle or piece of machinery. Frank pulled on the metal, silently praying that it wouldn’t make any sound. He slipped quietly into the warehouse and was instantly engulfed in deep shadows. He looked around and got his bearings, picturing the grid map on the infra-sensor. He began to move in the direction he’d last seen the dots that represented Joe and Luke. Frank froze as he heard a chilling voice. "Ah, there you two are," Garris crooned as he spotted Joe and Luke in the shadows of the warehouse, "Come along boys or I’ll have to shoot out your kneecaps to keep you from running." Garris carefully aimed at Luke’s legs.
