"How was your day, Luke?"
Susan Martin asked as her son came in through the kitchen door.
"It started out pretty much how it usually does. Got lots of weird looks," Luke replied, grabbing an apple from the basket on the table, "but it ended better than I could have ever expected." "The boys in that black van have something to do with it?" Mrs. Martin inquired, handing Luke a glass of cold milk. "Yeah," Luke grinned, "I think I’ve already made a friend. His name’s Joe and he’s in three of my classes. The van belongs to him and his brother, Frank. I sat with them and their group of friends at lunch. They all seemed really nice." "I’m glad, Luke," Susan smiled and ruffled her son’s dark hair. "Maybe you can invite Joe and his friends over sometime. I’d like to meet them." Luke cringed inwardly and glanced at the raven-haired girl that sat in the wheelchair across the table from him. Hope was smiling at him. Not that it was unusual, because Hope almost always smiled. What would his new friends think if they saw her? No way would he invite them to his house! Susan saw Luke glance at Hope and she silently sighed. Since Hope came into their lives, the secure world they’d lived in was turned upside down. "They invited me to join them after school tomorrow for pizza," Luke said, looking up at his mother from the chair he was perched on, "Since it’s Friday, I thought it would be okay." "We’ll run it past your father," she answered, "but I really don’t see why not. He’ll be glad that you’ve made some friends." * * * The driver of the black Monte Carlo pulled out of the fast-food parking lot, into the mainstream traffic of New York City. He expertly maneuvered his vehicle and was soon moving north, out of the city. "Who we huntin’ down, anyway?" asked the stocky, dark-haired man in the passenger seat, as he tossed his burger wrapper to the back seat. "Didn’t you read the file, Diller?" replied a muscular man of Hispanic descent. "Naw," replied John Diller, "Figured you’d do it so I didn’t need to." Max Bianco shook his head, "How in the world did you ever make it in this organization? To answer your question, we are to dispose of one David Morgan and any witnesses that might be detrimental to us." "So where we headin’?" Diller inquired. "Bayport." * * * Early the next morning, Frank Hardy had just walked into the kitchen for breakfast when the telephone on the wall rang. He reached to answer it, giving his mother a quick smile as she placed a platter of pancakes on the table. "Hello," the 18-year-old youth greeted the caller, "Frank Hardy speaking. May I help you?" "Ah, hi Frank," the caller responded, "This is Luke, ah, I sat with Joe at lunch, remember?" "Sure, Luke," Frank replied, "Did you want to speak to Joe?" "Ah, yeah," Luke said, "If he’s available." "Hang on, Luke," Frank said into the phone, and then carefully cupped his hand over the receiver and called up the stairs for his brother. Getting no response from Joe, Frank got back on the phone. "Luke, can you stay on the line for a couple minutes?" Frank asked, "It seems my baby brother is still in hibernation. I’ll have to run and get him." "Sure," Luke answered. Frank set the phone down and ran upstairs to Joe’s room. "Hey, Sleeping Beauty," Frank teased, pulling on the comforter that cocooned Joe, "Come on, Joe! You’ve got a phone call." "It’s only 6 o’clock!" Joe grumbled, glancing at his alarm clock with one eye, "I don’t have to get up for school yet!" "Look," Frank responded, "It’s your new friend Luke. Maybe he needs a lift to school this morning? Anyway, he’s holding on the line, so hurry." Joe untangled himself from the comforter, threw on a pair of sweat pants and followed his brother to the kitchen. "Luke, what’s up?" Joe said into the phone, stifling a yawn. "Hi Joe. My parents said it would be okay to go with you guys for pizza after school today," Luke said enthusiastically, "I’m afraid I’ll have to rely on you for transportation, though. Is that a problem?" "No way," Joe replied, "in fact, Frank and I can pick you up for school this morning if you’d like us to." "You would do that for me?" Luke answered in wonderment. "Sure," Joe chuckled, "It would be our pleasure. Mine actually, since I’m driving today! I’ve got to get gas this morning though, so it will be a little early." "Alright!" Luke exclaimed,
"Thanks so much, Joe! I’ll see you shortly, then."
