John Diller and Max Bianco pulled into a
service station just on the edge of Bayport. They had checked into a
cheap motel on the outskirts of town the night before. Bianco started
pumping gas into the car, but then motioned for Diller to come out and
take over.
"I’m gonna get some cigarettes," Bianco stated, "Watch the pump." He left his partner to finish filling the tank and headed inside the BP Station mini-mart. Moments later, Diller watched a black conversion van pull up at the pump beside him. A blond teenage boy climbed out of the driver’s door and began pumping the gas. "Nice wheels," Joe Hardy commented to the man across from him. Joe loved powerful, sleek cars and the Monte Carlo the guy was putting gas into was a beauty. "Yeah," grunted Diller, removing the nozzle from the gas tank. ‘Real friendly, talkative guy,’ Joe thought to himself. "Hey Frank," Joe called, tapping on his brother’s window to get the older boy’s attention, "Watch this while I go into the store." Frank opened his door and climbed out, while Joe jogged across the asphalt and into the mini-mart. "Why, if it isn’t the youngest Hardy man," commented Gus Sanderson, the manager of the mini-mart as he watched Joe walk into the store, "What can I do for you Joe? You paid for your gas at the pump, right?" "Yes, Sir," Joe smiled at the gray-haired man behind the counter, "but I needed some extra nourishment before school today." Gus laughed loudly as Joe placed a half pint of chocolate milk and a glazed, cinnamon donut on the counter. "Real nourishing, Joe!" Gus chuckled as he rang up the purchase. Joe picked up his snack and headed for the door as Max Bianco moved toward the counter. He carefully watched the blond youth climb into a black van and drive away. He took careful note of the license plate on the rear of the vehicle as it pulled away from the station. ‘GT A CLU,’ thought Bianco with a grin, ‘Personalized plates are so easy to remember.’ He bought his cigarettes and went out to the car, casually tossing the package of ‘Kools’ in the air and catching them again. John Diller watched his partner from the passenger seat of the Monte Carlo. Bianco was smiling. It was such a rare sight that at first, Diller didn’t recognize him. "Diller," stated Bianco as he sat down in the driver’s seat of the black sedan, "you will remember this day for the rest of your pathetic life." "What are you babbling about?" Diller questioned. "Just mark my words, my friend," Bianco grinned as he pulled the car onto the road, "Good fortune has smiled on us today!" * * * After school, an enthusiastic group of teens gathered around their favorite table in ‘Mr. Pizza’. Tony Prito, a handsome 18-year-old youth with dark hair and a good friend of the Hardys, worked after school at the pizza place. He chatted with his group of friends, but then took their order back to the kitchen. "Congratulations, Joe," enthused Biff Hooper, a tall, blond, muscular 17-year-old, "You got a higher score than I did on that Chemistry exam, and I studied ‘til my brains were turning to Jell-o!" "It pays to have a ‘Brain-iac’ for a brother," Joe grinned, glancing at his older brother. "You deserve that 98%, Joe," Frank said, shaking his head, "I only helped. You did all the memorizing on your own. I’m proud of you." Joe felt his face turn red at the praise from his brother. It meant a lot to Joe. Frank was often thought of as the ‘smart’ Hardy brother, meaning Joe was something less. Joe knew he was smart in his own way; he just didn’t get straight "A’s" in school like Frank. Frank was more studious than his brother and enjoyed reading and learning from books. Joe was more a ‘hands-on’ learner. He learned more by experience and watching others than from any textbook. Luke Martin had watched the exchange with curious interest. Obviously, Joe’s friends were surprised that Joe had scored so high on the Chemistry test. That seemed odd to Luke, who thought Joe seemed like a pretty intelligent guy. The whole thing made Luke realize that he really was an outsider. He didn’t know much about Joe, Frank or their friends. ‘Maybe I shouldn’t even be here’ He thought glumly. Vanessa Bender had been congratulating her boyfriend, too, when she noticed a faraway look on Luke Martin’s face. She bent close to Joe and whispered in his ear. Joe glanced at Luke, and then gave Vanessa a kiss on the cheek, "Go to it, ‘Ness," he added, encouragingly. Vanessa got Luke’s attention and asked if he’d help her get drinks, at the self-serve beverage bar. Luke nodded and went with the girl across the room. "It’s hard being the new kid, isn’t it?" Vanessa asked, glancing into Luke’s hazel eyes, "See, I know because I was the new kid just a few months ago." "You’re kidding, right?" Luke asked, wide-eyed, "You seem to fit right in with all of them!" "It’s true," Vanessa smiled, "But Joe, Frank, Callie and the rest of the gang, they were so great. They did everything they could to include me. It wasn’t long before I felt like I’d known them my whole life." "I…we, my family and I, have moved so much in the last year," Luke sadly said, "I just want to have some friends to, you know, hang with and do stuff." "Luke," Vanessa added,
snapping a lid on the cola she was holding, "Give it a week or two,
and you’ll feel like you’ve been a part of our group forever. I
guarantee it!"
