CHAPTER 31

As Fenton Hardy emerged from his home office later that night, he noticed his two teenaged boys heading out the front door of their home on Elm Street.

"Boys!" Mr. Hardy quickly called out, bringing both Frank and Joe to an abrupt stop.

"Did you need us, Dad?" asked Frank as they both turned toward their father.

"I take it, you’re heading over to Cassidy’s property?" the detective inquired.

"We’re meeting Biff and Tony over at Chet’s place," answered Joe, "Then we plan to set up surveillance around Mr. Cassidy’s property."

Chet’s family lived on a farm just on the edge of town, close to the property Tighndale Cassidy had purchased.

"I need to fill you both in on the information I picked up today," Mr. Hardy said, "Come in the office for a minute. I won’t keep you from meeting your friends. This won’t take long." Frank and Joe exchanged a quick glance and followed their father into his office.

As the boys sat in the two chairs Fenton provided for clients, Mr. Hardy sat in the leather chair behind a large oak desk. He smiled at the two young men that sat before him. It was his dream that in a few years, he’d be able to make the boys equal partners in the detective business. He looked forward to that day with great anticipation.

"Dad?" queried Joe, seeing a dreamy look in his father’s eyes.

"Sorry," replied Mr. Hardy with an embarrassed grin, "Just daydreaming and that’s not very profitable, is it?" The boys smiled and waited for him to go on.

"I had Sam Radley do some checking for me," Fenton began, referring to his assistant, "He discovered that three other parties had put bids on the property Mr. Cassidy now owns."

"So, maybe someone is still interested enough to try and discourage Mr. Cassidy from doing anything with the property?" Frank inquired thoughtfully.

"But the stuff going on sounds more like kid stuff, not the work of a disgruntled business man," Joe added.

"Actually," Mr. Hardy stated, "it could be both, Joe. If it’s one of the other parties…let me see, I’ve got the names here. Ah, yes, the Leviathan Corporation, Darby Buildings, Inc., and a Mr. Hewett Campbell." Mr. Hardy handed the list to Joe and Frank.

"As I was saying," the elder Hardy continued, "If one of these parties is involved, they could have hired some kids to do the dirty work."

"Why the sudden interest?" Joe asked, drawing the attention of his father and brother, "I mean, those houses have been empty for a couple of years. Why would four different parties be bidding on that land now?"

"H-m-m. Interesting thought, Joe," Fenton acknowledged, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "As you boys know, I’m still tied up in another case. Maybe that’s an angle you two can check into over the weekend."

"Not to change the subject, but," Frank looked at his dad, his eyes sparkling with interest, "how is your case coming? Can you tell us about it?"

"’Fraid not," Mr. Hardy said, chuckling softly at the boys forlorn expressions. "It’s classified. I’ve got to head for Washington in the morning and meet with Arthur Gray. You boys may remember him from the Walker camp…" Fenton glanced quickly at his younger son, immediately sorry for bringing to mind a time Joe would like to forget.

Frank also looked quickly to his brother. The boys both knew Arthur Gray, better known as the "Gray Man", a top operative for the secret government agency known as the Network. Since first meeting Gray, the boys had worked with the agent several times, keeping their involvement with the Network a secret from their parents.

Fenton had worked security with Gray during a political campaign. It was during a rally at the Bayport Mall, that a terrorist group, known as the Assassins, blew up Frank and Joe’s car, killing Joe’s young girlfriend, Iola Morton.

"I’m sorry, Joe," Fenton immediately apologized. Though it had been well over a year since Iola’s death, and Joe had a new girlfriend now, Mr. Hardy knew his sensitive son would forever grieve for his first love.

"Its okay, Dad," Joe gave his dad a small smile, carefully masking the hurt in his eyes, "Frank and I both remember Mr. Gray."

"I’m meeting with him to discuss the probability that the Assassins are setting up some kind of base here on the east coast," Mr. Hardy continued, "At present, that’s about all I can tell you."

The boys bid their father good-bye and headed out to their van. As Frank pulled the van out of the driveway, he glanced at Joe.

"You okay?" he asked, his voice laced with concern.

"Yeah," Joe said, smiling at Frank, "Really."

"You know, the Assassins have bases all over the United States, all over the world, in fact," Frank pondered, "What’s so special about them setting one up here on the east coast?"

"Are you mind-reading again?" Joe asked with a grin, "I was wondering the same thing myself. Maybe this is important because the seat of our entire government is here on the east coast?"

"Maybe," Frank agreed, "but I think it’s more involved than just that."

"Well, you’re probably right," Joe said, "but for now, we have our own case to deal with and the guys are waiting for us."
