CHAPTER 31

As soon as they got back to their motel room for the night, Max Bianco began punching a number on the telephone keypad. John Diller sat on the edge of his bed, still perplexed by his partner’s peculiar behavior earlier. Ever since they left the gas station that morning, Bianco had been grinning like the cat that swallowed the canary.

"It’s Bianco. I gotta talk to the Boss," Max said into the telephone mouthpiece, "Tell him this information will be the highlight of his day."

"Hey, Boss," Max began, "First, we got no where lookin’ for Morgan. We’ll get back at it tomorrow. Diller ‘n me are stayin’ at the Bayport Motor Inn. Yeah, we had no problems finding the place. Had to fill up the car this mornin’, and ran into somethin’ real interestin’. You know that P.I. that worked for Gray and the Network? Yeah, right. Hardy. He was from New York, right? There’s a kid here in Bayport named Hardy. He’s about 16 or 17 years old. First name is ‘Joe’. Drives a black van, license plate reads, ‘G-T space, A space, C-L-U.’ Thought you might find that interestin’. Right, Boss. Bye."

"That kid at the mini-mart," Diller said, finally figuring out what Bianco was so happy about, "You think he’s maybe Hardy’s kid?"

"If he is," Bianco said with a grin, "Our friends in higher places have wanted him for a long time. We may just get a nice little bonus out of this trip."

Joe Hardy and Biff Hooper were huddled low behind the shrubbery at the edge of Mr. Cassidy’s property, watching one of the empty houses.

"Great!" Biff cried in a loud whisper, pulling off his gloves, "I think my fingers are completely frozen!" He began blowing on his cold hands.

"I hate surveillance jobs," agreed Joe, "Especially when it’s so stinking cold!" He began flexing his own, gloved fingers in an attempt to ward off the early winter evening cold.

"This is the ultimate in boring!" Biff sighed, "There’s nothing happening. Even the bad guys know when to get out of the cold."

"Yeah. I wonder if the other guys have seen any action?" questioned Joe.

Several yards away, at another vantage point on the same property, Chet Morton and Tony Prito were watching another house. They were waiting for Frank, who had dropped them all off and went to hide their van down the road.

"Cheese and crackers!" exclaimed Chet between chattering teeth, "we’re freezing out here and Frank’s probably sitting in the warm van taking a nap!"

"Not likely," responded Tony with a shake of his dark head, "But he should have been here by now. Maybe he went to check with Joe and Biff first."

Frank had dropped off both surveillance teams and parked the van in the shadows along the road, well away from the Cassidy property. He quickly made his way to the first lot in the line of eight. Six of the lots contained houses, while two were acreage only.

As he started to cross the empty lot to reach the first house, a brief flash of light toward the back of the property caught his attention. Knowing that Chet and Tony were nearby as backup, Frank went to where he thought he saw the light. He took out his penlight and carefully directed the beam on the ground. There were several fresh footprints in the light coating of snow.

Too late, Frank heard a slight noise behind him. Turning defensively, Frank’s vision was filled with a fast approaching object that collided swiftly with his temple. Pain and darkness washed over him, bringing Frank to his knees. Before he could get up, a second blow connected with the back of his head and Frank sank to the ground, unconscious.

Dan Martin carefully spooned another mouthful of processed food into Hope’s mouth. He smiled at the girl, wondering if she had been pretty at one time. Her misshaped features and mangled body gave no sign of beauty, but her brown eyes carried a twinkle.

He wiped off Hope’s chin, "There you go, Honey Pie," Dan smiled, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead. He put her spoon and dish in the sink and then moved her wheelchair into the living room.

Dan turned on the television, but really didn’t watch it. He just stared at the girl in the wheelchair. She had disrupted their lives and things would never be the same for his family, but she had also been their salvation. Because of Hope, he was free. At least, he hoped so.

Joe Hardy couldn’t believe how bad his head was suddenly hurting. He tried rubbing his temples, but the pain was exploding through his brain on all sides.

"Man, my head," Joe finally said, unable to stand the pain any longer, "I’ve never had a headache come on so strong before!"

Biff glanced at his friend. Joe was holding both sides of his head tightly and pinching his eyes closed. At first, Biff thought maybe Joe was looking for an excuse to go get warm in the van, but when Joe opened his eyes, Biff knew Joe was serious.

Tears were coming from Joe’s eyes as the pain became unbearable. "Come on, Joe," Biff helped Joe to his feet, "We’ll find Frank and the other guys."

At the mention of Frank’s name, the pain evaporated. Joe stopped and his eyes grew wide in realization. "Frank! Oh God, Biff! Frank’s hurt bad!" The two teens began running across the front yards of the property.
