THE CHAPTERS

The dead leaves of late autumn now
frozen with November’s first light snow, crunched under his feet as he
walked purposefully among the headstones. The early morning sun was
shining with a deceptively warm glow through the barren trees. He paused
to catch his breath; the cold air he sucked into his lungs causing him to
shiver slightly. There it was. The pink granite sparkled in winter’s
light. He walked on, already feeling the warm tears cascading down his
cold cheeks.
Joe Hardy knelt beside the headstone of his first love. He first met her when he was only four years old. They were playmates as small children. In grade school, Joe thought all girls had cooties; but secretly, he thought if she had them, they were very pretty ones. In Junior High, they started ‘dating’; going to football games, dances and each other’s houses. During their first year of high school, it was official that Joe Hardy and Iola Morton belonged to each other. But their dreams of a future together came to a tragic and abrupt end. In his mind’s eye, Joe could clearly recall the day Iola died as if it had just happened yesterday, instead of over a year ago. He couldn’t save her and now she was gone. He closed his eyes as he saw the flaming vehicle that had consumed her. Though nothing had remained of Iola, her family had erected this headstone on the family plot to remember her. "I’m so sorry, Iola," he whispered, his voice strained with emotion. "I came today to wish you a happy birthday, but…I’m really saying good-bye. I’ll never forget you and I’ll still come by to visit, but it’s time for me to move on with my life, no matter how much it hurts." He caressed the cold granite with his gloved hand. "I met a really nice girl," Joe continued gently, "Her name’s Vanessa. We’ve been dating several months now. She’s really been good to me and she’s been very patient. She knows all about you. I think you’d like her, Iola." He tried to brush the tears off his cheeks, but they were frozen, making his face feel stiff. "Don’t be mad at me, please," the boy said, "I’ll always have a part of you in my heart, and I know a part of me went with you, too. I loved you, Iola." He put the bouquet of pink carnations against the headstone and began walking away, the words of a familiar song going through his soul: Got a picture of you I carry in my heart, I close my eyes and see it, when the world gets dark. Got a mem’ry of you I carry in my soul, I wrap it close around me when the nights get cold. And if you ask me how I’m doin’, I’d say just fine; But the truth is, Baby, if you could read my mind... Not a day goes by that I don’t think of you, After all this time you’re still with me it’s true. Somehow you remain locked so deep inside; Baby, Baby, oh Baby! Not a day goes by!
I still wait for the phone in the middle of the night, Thinking you might call me if your dreams don’t turn out right. And it still amazes me that I lie here in the dark, Wishing you were next to me with your head against my heart.
Minutes turn to hours, and the hours to days, Seems it’s been forever that I felt this way. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of you, After all this time you’re still with me it’s true. Somehow you remain locked so deep inside; Baby, Baby, oh Baby! Not a day goes by!
