CHAPTER 13

"You must be the famous Mr. Fenton Hardy," greeted a man with close-cropped gray hair. "I’m Sergeant Hank Clayton, at your service."

"Good to meet you, Sir," Fenton shook the man’s outstretched hand.

"I could only get a two-seater bird," Hank said, guiding the detective to a small helicopter, "but we have some back-up heading toward Reedville as we speak. I don’t know who you know in Washington, but we’ve been told to give you our full co-operation. I called on some of my reserve boys in Scranton and they’re heading out right now. If the wind is with us, we’ll probably beat them to Reedville by 15 or 20 minutes."

"We need to get there as soon as possible," Mr. Hardy explained. "From what I’ve heard, several people are already dead and a maniac killer is stalking my two sons."

"Let’s go, then, Sir!"

"No cross-bow," Joe whispered in his brother’s ear as he watched the man standing in the sanctuary doorway. He was dressed in black jeans and a black, long sleeve jersey. He had an all-American look to him, with his short blond hair and clean shaven chin. Joe estimated his age to be about thirty.

"Good," Frank replied, concerning the missing bow. In the business of setting up their mock church, Frank had forgotten about the cross-bow used to kill the Gales family.

"He may have a knife, though," Frank suggested.

"I don’t plan on getting close enough to him to find out," Joe answered.

"Well, boys," the man called out, "It seems you’ve done some redecorating. Can’t say that I like it much, though."

Frank and Joe remained hidden, watching and waiting.

"Come now, I’m unarmed," the man called, holding out his arms with the palms up, "I just want to meet you clever boys face to face. Just let me look at you!"

"What do we do?" Joe asked, his voice tense. Frank didn’t answer, but stood up. Joe swallowed hard, but then followed his brother’s lead.

"Ah! There you are. You’re younger than I imagined. I thought you were older, but I’ll bet you’re not much older than the Kelly girl."

"Now that you’ve seen us, what do you want?" Frank asked, stepping out of the choir loft.

"I have a little proposition for you boys," the man smiled. "You see, you’ve put a damper on my plans tonight. I needed that Kelly girl, but somehow you tricked me and she escaped."

"At first, I was really quite angry with you both, but I’ve had time to think this over. I could take you both with me on an incredible journey. You will live forever."

Joe started quietly humming the theme to the ‘Twilight Zone’ as he stood beside Frank. Frank stayed focused on the man in the doorway.

"Why don’t you come on in, and we’ll chat," Frank said with a smile.

"Are you crazy, Frank?" Joe hissed in his brother’s ear, "We don’t want to get close to him!"

"Do you think your little furnishings frighten me?" the man asked.

"I think you’re afraid to come in, because you know we’ve invited God back in this place," Frank challenged.

The man laughed and it sent chills down Joe’s spine. He sure hoped Frank was right. Joe watched as the man took a hesitating step forward.

"Come on in, just a little more," Frank taunted. He could see the sweat breaking out on the man’s forehead.

"Come now!" the man suddenly shouted, looking wildly around the room, "Fill me with your power!" He raised his hands and took another half-step into the sanctuary.

As if it were planned, thunder suddenly rumbled and lightening flashed outside the stained glass windows. The entire building shook as the thunder faded.

The man in black stepped back over the thresh hold with a whimper. He glanced once at the Hardy brothers, then turned and ran out the front doors.

"Awesome!" Joe said, staring at the vacated spot where the man had been standing. "You were right, Frank. He was too scared to come inside!"
