THE CHAPTERS |
This
story is about Joe Hardy. He
is only four years old and lives with his mother, father, aunt and
brother Frank. Joe’s
father is a detective, but he used to be a police officer.
A detective is like a police officer that works by himself,
chasing down criminals. Joe’s
mom works sometimes as a volunteer and now, his brother Frank goes to
kindergarten. Joe’s
Aunt Gertrude watches him everyday and she lives in their big house on
the corner of On
Frank’s first day of school, Joe was very sad.
He loved his brother and wanted Frank to stay home and play with
him. Mom explained that Frank
had to go to school because it was the law. Joe
watched Frank climb into the family station wagon and drive away with
Mom. “Frank
will be home before you know it, Joey,” said Dad.
He gave Joe a hug, but then he went to his car and drove away. “Can
we play a game?” Joe asked Aunty. “I
have some sewing to do. Go
play in the yard until Frank comes home at lunch time,” Aunty said. Joe
took a ball and went into the yard to play.
He bounced the ball on the fence and caught it.
He did this a few times when he noticed something strange.
There was someone beside him doing the same thing! Joe
ran in the house and got his Aunty. He
showed her his new playmate. Aunty
smiled. “That is your
shadow. See?
I have a shadow, too.” Sure
enough, Joe saw that Aunty had a shadow-friend, too. Everyday,
after Frank left for school, Joe would go and play with his new friend in
the backyard. When Joe ran,
his friend would run; when Joe jumped, his friend would jump – they had
so much fun together. When
Frank came home, Joe would have lunch with his brother.
After lunch, the boys both had to take their naps.
Joe would forget about his shadow-friend until the next day. One
morning after Frank went to school, Joe put on his sweater and went
outside. It was cloudy and a
little chilly. Joe
looked everywhere, but he couldn’t find his friend.
He checked around the fence. He
looked near the swing set. He
searched by the sand box. His
friend was gone! Joe
ran in and told Aunty. “Well,
that is a mystery!” Aunty said. She
went with Joe outside. She
looked up at the cloudy sky and knew what was wrong. “I
think you and I can do a little detective work, Joey,” Aunty said. Joe
followed her into the house. “Find
a flashlight, Joey,” Aunty said. She
was busy closing all the curtains in the living room.
Joe ran to the kitchen and got a flashlight from the utility
drawer. When
Joe got back to the living room, it was dark and Aunty had moved the
couch away from the wall. “Joey,
detectives use flashlights to look for missing people all the time,”
Aunty said. “Does
Daddy have a flashlight with him?” Joe asked. “Of
course,” said Aunty. “Now,
go stand in front of the wall, but not too close.” Joe
walked to the wall and stopped. Suddenly
there was light behind him and in front of him…was his shadow-friend! Joe
and his friend jumped for joy! Aunty
laughed. “You
see, Joey? Your daddy isn’t
the only detective in this family,” Aunty said. THE
