CHAPTER 20

He quietly opened the door, shutting off the security system as he entered. He turned the alarm system back on so the family wouldn’t suspect anything. He made his way up the back steps, into the boy’s room. He smiled pleasantly as he waited.

At 10 p.m., Fenton Hardy sent his wife and sister home with Joe amid much protesting from the boy. When Joe absolutely refused to leave Frank, Fenton took his son aside. He told Joe to take Laura and Gertrude home. He then explained that he wanted Joe to get a few hours rest, then come back and relieve him first thing in the morning. Finally, Joe agreed and he took the women back to the house.

The two women went right to bed, physically and emotionally drained. Joe waited until he was sure they were in bed before he went to Frank’s room. He checked the e-mail to see if there was anything from the Gray Man. There was nothing, yet.

Joe went to the bathroom and showered. He walked into his bedroom and pulled on a clean pair of boxers and sat down at his desk. He knew he wouldn’t be able to sleep, so he worked on his research paper. He suddenly heard movement behind him and he turned around in his chair.

"Who are you?" the boy demanded, facing a stout man with a ski mask over his face. The man was holding a gun. Joe clenched his fists and prepared for an opportunity to fight.

"Easy boy. You can call me Rook," the man said, "Stand up and get dressed. Keep in mind that my friend is standing in the hallway right outside your dear mommy’s bedroom with a gun." Joe relaxed his hands, knowing there was absolutely nothing he would do to jeopardize his mother’s or his aunt’s lives. He did as he was told and quickly got dressed.

The Gray Man entered the hospital without being noticed. His ability to blend into any environment was part of what made him a top agent in the Network. He quickly found the clothes he needed in a supply closet. After changing, Gray made his way to Frank Hardy’s room and slipped inside.

The boy’s father was asleep in a chair. ‘That makes this easier,’ Gray thought as he approached the bed. He was surprised at how terrible Frank looked. He pulled a syringe from his pocket and fed the fluid into Frank’s IV line. The antidote was powerful and should bring results within 3 hours, if it wasn’t too late already. Gray silently slipped from the room and out of the hospital. No one would remember seeing him there.

"Where’s the package with your recent instructions?" asked the gunman, once Joe was dressed. Joe stalled for time by playing dumb and pretending not to know what the man was talking about. The slap across his face took Joe completely by surprise, and he fell to the floor. "Let’s try again, kid. Where’s the package?"

"It’s in the van," Joe replied, getting back on his feet.

"Here’s what we’re going to do," the man said, "We are going out to your van. We will drive to Collig’s house and you will play the game as you were instructed. If anything goes wrong and my friend Knight doesn’t hear from me that Collig’s dead within the hour, he will take great pleasure in killing your mother. Plus, you will never be able to save your brother’s life."

"Gray, where are you?" crackled a voice over the Gray Man’s two-way radio. "There’s activity here."

"What’s happening?" asked Gray.

"Two Assassins entered the house. One just came out with Hardy. They are leaving in the black van." Replied the Network operative, watching the Hardy home. "The other one must still be inside with the women."

"Right," responded Gray, "Everyone is in place. Wait for my signal to close down this operation." ‘I just wish I could have forewarned my impetuous friend of our plan.’ Gray thought. He hoped that Joe Hardy would remain cool and calm. Gray shook his head. ‘That’s certainly expecting a lot from young, Mr. Hardy.’

"Where am I?" the boy pondered, totally disoriented. He felt weak and helpless. ‘What’s happening to me?’ Something was stuck in his throat. He tried to cough it out, but couldn’t. Panic seized him and he tried moving.

"Frank? Son?" Fenton Hardy moved quickly to his 18-year-old son’s side. He brushed a stray lock of hair from off of Frank’s forehead. Fenton frowned. He felt Frank’s forehead again. It was very warm and moist. ‘A fever?’ Fenton wondered, pressing the button for the nurse. "Sh-h; it’s alright Frank. Just relax."

Frank felt assured by the soothing voice. He forced his eyes open. ‘Dad?’ He tried to say, but not sound came. Fenton looked into his son’s warm, brown eyes and smiled.

Joe Hardy stopped the van in front of Chief Collig’s house. Under the watchful eye of his capture, Joe loaded the Taurus and tucked it behind his back in the waistband of his jeans.

"Failure means the death of two people you love," the man in the mask stated. "Don’t be stupid, kid."

Joe exited the van and knocked on Collig’s door. Mrs. Collig answered and let Joe into the house. She led him to the living room. Joe could see the chief sitting in an easy chair watching the late news, his back to Joe.

"I’m going to bed. I’ll leave you two to talk," Mrs. Collig said, and then went up the stairs.

"Come on in, Joe," Collig called from the chair. Joe Hardy pulled the gun out from behind him and walked forward. He moved in front of Collig’s chair and aimed the gun at the chief’s chest.
