THE GAME MASTER |

THE CHAPTERS |
"Frank is running a temperature," Dr. Bates told Fenton Hardy, after checking the boy. "I’m going to order more blood work and try to figure out what’s changed to bring this fever on. Try not to worry too much. Usually, a fever is a good thing."
"He was awake," Mr. Hardy said softly, "That ought to count for something, right?"
"That is very surprising," the doctor related, "considering how very sick Frank is right now. Personally, I’m going to count that as a positive sign."

‘Everything is coming together despite Joseph’s little friends helping him. Joseph will kill Collig and we will have him.’ smiled the Game Master, ‘Frank will die, even if he is given the antidote. The poison has damaged him beyond repair, and if Joseph doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life in prison, he will belong to us now.’

Joe Hardy stood in front of the chair facing Chief Ezra Collig; the Taurus loaded and aimed straight at the man’s chest. Joe was ready to apologize for what he was about to do, when he looked carefully at the chief. Suddenly Joe had a strong impression that Frank was telling him ‘Don’t do it!’ Joe shook his head.
"I c-can’t do this," Joe said, knowing that he was killing his brother, mother and probably his aunt by conceding in dispair.
"Don’t put that gun down. Hold it very steady on target," said Collig’s voice. Joe looked up startled, but held the gun steady. "Some ‘suits’ from the government are here and had me put on a bullet proof vest. They said you were coming to kill me to save Frank." Collig looked into Joe Hardy’s tear filled eyes and smiled, "I knew you wouldn’t go through with it. You love your family, but you’re no murderer."
"If I d-don’t s-shoot," Joe said, trying to keep his composure, "that guy in my van is going to have his partner kill Mom. Frank will die too, since I haven’t got the antidote yet."
"So, pull the trigger Joe; Make it believable," Collig responded, "Kill me." Joe felt nauseas, but swallowed down the bile that threatened the back of his throat. Joe Hardy pulled the trigger.

Frank’s eyes flew open. ‘No,’ his mind screamed, ‘Joe, don’t do it!’ Fenton sensed Frank’s distress and tried to calm his son. Frank’s eyes were wide with terror. Fenton ran out the door to catch Dr. Bates.
"Frank, are you in pain?" the doctor asked, checking the boy’s eyes carefully. Frank minutely shook his head no. Tears were falling from his eyes. There was no way he could tell them that Joe was in trouble.

Joe fired two shoots at Collig’s bulletproof protected chest. The door to the house opened almost right away and the man called ‘Rook’ entered. He held his own gun on Joe as he entered the room.
"Nice work, kid," the man said, reaching for the gun in Joe’s hand. Joe’s reaction was purely instinctive. He raised the gun and trained it on Rook.
"Don’t be stupid kid," the man said, "Think about your brother and your dear mommy." At that moment, Rook heard movement behind him and to his left. He began to sweat as he noticed the gun in a very much alive Ezra Collig’s hand.
"You are surrounded," Collig stated, "Drop the weapon, now!" Suddenly, the man began to convulse, the gun slipping from his hand.
"No!" Joe screamed, trying to pull off the ski mask to retrieve the suicide pill from the man’s mouth. It was too late. Joe slumped against Collig’s chair.
"Knight will kill my Mom if he doesn’t hear from this guy within the hour," Joe stated, looking up at Collig.
They both turned to see who was in the hallway behind the man. Joe was shocked to see the Gray Man standing there with two other Network agents.
"Your mother and aunt are safe. They will never know how close they came to dying tonight," Gray stated, taking the gun from Joe’s hand. "Unfortunately, Knight met with the same demise as this man. By the way, your brother has already been given the antidote."
"Frank needs me," Joe said, hearing his brother’s plea all over again. "I’m going to the hospital." Gray followed Joe out to the van.
"This isn’t over," Gray told the blond boy, "The Game Master is still out there. The Assassins still want you. We have to plot our next course of action."
"Later," Joe stated, starting the engine, "Frank’s all that matters now."
