CHAPTER 20

‘Where are those idiots the Director let me borrow?’ the Game Master paced back and forth across the motel room. ‘They should have reported in by now!’ He reached over and flipped on the television set, hoping to catch the early morning news. The top story brought a smile to the man’s face. "...and our top story, Bayport Police Chief Ezra Collig was found shot to death this morning..."

Joe Hardy saw his father coming out of Frank’s hospital room. Fenton looked up as Joe approached and the two men embraced.

"Good news, Joe," Fenton began, keeping an arm around his son’s broad shoulder. He was worried at Joe’s appearance. His skin was pale, his eyes were bloodshot with dark circles under them and he seemed completely exhausted. "Frank’s been awake, at least for brief periods. Also, Dr. Bates has taken him off the respirator." Fenton was pleased by the sparkle that came to Joe’s eyes at the news of Frank’s improvement.

"I thought I sent you home to get some rest?" Mr. Hardy inquired as he turned to face Joe.

"I tried," Joe replied, unable to look his father in the eyes. "Are you heading home?"

"Think I’ll grab some strong coffee from the cafeteria before I try driving home," Fenton replied, "I’ll check in with you before I leave." Joe nodded and went to Frank’s room as Fenton walked away.

Stephen Ambrose pulled into the Hardy’s driveway and made his way to the front door. Laura Hardy answered.

"Stephen? What brings you here so early?" Mrs. Hardy asked with a smile. She moved aside and invited the man inside.

"I hope you don’t mind that I’m making a pest of myself," the man timidly spoke, "I’ve been so concerned about you all. I’ve got to leave town for a few days and thought I should check in with you before I go."

Laura directed the distinguished man to the kitchen where Gertrude Hardy was preparing omelets for breakfast.

"Stephen, how nice of you to stop by on your way to the airport," Gertrude greeted pleasantly, already knowing of Stephen’s planned trip. "Won’t you join us for breakfast?"

"I’m sorry, Dear," he gently kissed Gertrude’s cheek, "I must be off, but I wanted to see how Frank was doing. I’m also quite concerned for Joe. He is quite upset these days."

"Good news, " Laura said, her face bright, "Frank is off the respirator and showing signs of improvement."

"My, that is good news! Wonderful!" the man replied, "And Joe, does he know this?"

"Joe left early for the hospital," Laura responded, "He was gone before we got up, so I’m sure he knows."

"Well then," Stephen said, putting his hat on and heading for the door, "I’m so glad I’m leaving on a positive note! By the time I return, perhaps Frank will be home where he belongs!"

Fenton Hardy sat at the counter of the hospital snack shop nursing a cold cup of black coffee and watching the news. "...police believe they have the murder weapon used to kill Chief of Police Ezra Collig. A hand gun found at the scene was dusted for prints and a potential suspect is being sought by the police..." The cold coffee in Fenton’s stomach lurched and he barely made it to the men’s room in time.

Joe walked into Frank’s room, his stomach still in knots over what transpired at the Collig house. He made his way to Frank’s bedside.

"Frank?" Joe whispered softly, "Can you hear me Big Brother?" Joe’s heart soared as he saw Frank’s eyes blink open and he looked into his brother’s dark, brown orbs.

"Joe," the name escaped in a hoarse whisper from Frank’s lips, "Oh Joe. I saw the l-letters, the Game Master’s letters. You’ve g-got to tell Dad."

"I will, soon," Joe promised, glancing nervously at the door. "Frank? You’ve got to promise me that you’ll believe in me, no matter what."

"Joe, what’s going on? What have you done?" Frank felt sick as he remembered the image of Joe aiming a gun at Chief Collig. Wasn’t that a dream?

"Frank, I’ve got to get out of here," Joe anxiously stated, "but promise me you’ll believe in me no matter what you hear or see over the next day or two." Frank saw tears rolling down Joe’s pale cheeks.

"I believe in you, Baby Brother," Frank assured, "No matter what!" Frank felt his own eyes filling with tears. Joe squeezed Frank’s hand and moved toward the door. He paused and looked back at his brother.

"Keep getting better and Frank?" Joe said, his voice cracking with emotion, "I love you!" Joe glanced down the hallway. He saw his father talking to Con Riley and two other Bayport police officers. Joe quickly turned and walked down the hall in the opposite direction.
