THE GAME MASTER |

THE CHAPTERS |
"Freeze!" The Network agents closed in on the front of the motel as the Game Master came dashing out. Looking at the agents surrounding him, the Game Master closed his eyes and shook his head in disbelief. Then he began laughing as the Gray Man moved in and cuffed him. Gray read Stephen Ambrose his rights.
"Gray," Ambrose smiled, turning slightly to face the Network agent, "You should have hired Joseph Hardy to hunt me down long ago."
"And you," Gray countered, "should have stayed in retirement."

"Fenton? Where is Frank?" Laura Hardy’s panicked voice sounded outside of Frank’s hospital room. She and her sister-in-law Gertrude had just arrived at the hospital minutes before.
"They’ve taken him upstairs to start dialysis," Fenton Hardy replied in a hollow, drained voice. "Frank’s kidney’s have completely shut down." Laura began sobbing and Gertrude Hardy stood in shocked silence. Fenton put his arms around the two women.

Joe Hardy stared in wide-eyed terror at the man coming into the bathroom. ‘I won’t let him take me to the Assassins without a fight,’ the boy silently vowed, instinctively tensing for a confrontation.
The man noted Joe’s reaction to him and smiled warmly, "Relax, Hardy. I’m with here with Gray." He reached over and gently pulled the tape from Joe’s mouth. "I’m Agent Rijn Abels."
Abels escorted Joe out to the empty gray Taurus. Joe sat in the back and suddenly the impact of all that had transpired in the past several days hit him like a tidal wave. Joe began trembling uncontrollably and tears ran silently down his cheeks.
The front passenger door opened and Joe quickly wiped away the tears with the back of his hand. Gray pretended not to notice the boy’s emotional state. Agent Abels climbed in behind the wheel of the car and started the engine.
"Your name will not be associated with the arrest of the Game Master," Gray was telling Joe, "Of course, you understand why. However, you did come in rather useful on this bust. I’ve personally been after the Game Master for several years."
"I helped you only to say thank you for giving Frank the antidote," Joe responded. Joe thought a moment. "Did you know his identity?"
"No," Gray replied, "That’s why he has been so difficult to catch. The watch you’re wearing not only has a tracing device in it, it also has a voice bug. We had to be sure it was definitely the Game Master, or whether it was an Assassin impersonator."
"And if it hadn’t been the Game Master, just an Assassin, would you have let them take me?" the seventeen-year-old asked.
"As tempting as it would have been to have you out of my hair," the Gray Man answered, "No, I wouldn’t want them to have you. Despite my personal feelings for you, Joseph, both you and Frank have a lot of potential, you just need to do some growing up first." Joe chuckled and laid his head back on the seat, trying to remember when he had last ate or slept. In minutes, the boy was sound asleep.
"Gray," Abels started, glancing at the man opposite him, "Why not just admit that the Hardy brothers are good at what they do?"
"Never," Gray answered with a shake of his head, "they mustn’t ever know how valuable they have been to us. Come, we must pick up Collig from the safe house and clear young Joseph’s good name."

"Frank Hardy’s family?" a pretty Asian woman in a pale green surgical outfit called out, entering the main waiting area of Bayport General Hospital.
"Yes," Fenton Hardy responded, rising from his chair.
"Please, sit down," the woman said with a smile, "I’m Dr. Hannah Takahara. I’m with the Urology Department here at BGH and I’ve been assigned to Frank’s case." Mr. Hardy sat down beside his wife and sister. "I know this is a difficult time and I don’t want to patronize you with a lot of false hope or general platitudes. I am going to be very honest and forthwith. Frank’s condition is extremely serious. The poison that was in his bloodstream, settled in his kidneys. Even though the poison has mysteriously disappeared, the damage to the kidneys is irreversible. He has had a successful dialysis treatment, and is feeling better right now, but his natural kidney function is completely nonexistent."
"In other words," Mr. Hardy swallowed hard, "He’ll be on dialysis for the rest of his life?"
"Unfortunately," continued Dr. Takahara, "that’s not possible. Dialysis is not designed to take over the operation of the kidneys in a long-term situation. It is simply a temporary solution."
"Is Frank going to die?" Laura Hardy asked in a small voice.
"Frank can live a long, healthy life if we can find him a compatible kidney," the doctor said.
"Transplant? You’re talking about a kidney transplant?" questioned Gertrude Hardy. "Well now we’re getting somewhere! Where do I go to be tested?" Dr. Takahara smiled.
"You can all be tested, if you like," she continued, "but usually the best candidate is a sibling. Does Frank have any brothers or sisters?"
