CHAPTER 20

Within minutes, everyone was tested, including Phil Cohen, Callie Shaw and Vanessa Bender, who had arrived at the hospital also.

The group was led to a private waiting area to wait for the results. Everyone listened as Chief of Police Ezra Collig filled in the details about the Game Master. He was careful in his explanation, avoiding any association between the Network and Joe.

At the mention of Stephen Ambrose, the Hardy’s were shocked. He had used Gertrude Hardy to get close to the family. Ambrose had even made copies of Gertrude’s keys so he would be able to come and go from their home freely. Fenton immediately ran to his sister’s side, offering comfort, but she would have none of it.

"I brought that dreaded man into our home, Fenton," Gertrude said, tears welling in her eyes, "I feel used and betrayed, but I will not give him the satisfaction of feeling any sorrow. I hope they lock him up and throw away the key for what he has done to Frank and what he’s put Joe through!" Fenton and Joe smiled proudly at the woman’s grit.

Joe and Vanessa were tired of waiting. They walked down to Frank’s room. Joe offered the only chair to Vanessa, but she insisted he sit, knowing he had hardly slept in the past several days. Vanessa stood behind her boyfriend and gently massaged his neck. Frank was sleeping, and soon Joe drifted off to sleep. Vanessa left him to rest quietly, returning to the waiting room with the others.

Frank Hardy opened his eyes and saw his baby brother sleeping nearby. He couldn’t believe Joe was really there! What about the police? Were they still looking for him?

"Joe? Wake up, Bro!" Frank called out, hoarsely. Joe heard Frank’s voice, but wanted to keep sleeping.

"Five more minutes, Frank," Joe mumbled, "I won’t be late for school."

"Come on Joe!" Frank insisted, "We need to talk!"

Joe opened his eyes and was completely disoriented. He finally focused on Frank’s dark brown eyes. Joe’s handsome face broke into a broad smile.

"Frank! Man, am I glad to see you!" Joe began, "I’ve got so much to tell..." Joe was interrupted by a knock on the door. Vanessa’s pretty blond head poked around the corner.

"Joe, the test results are in," she simply said, then gave Frank a warm smile. "We’ll be right back, Frank!" Joe added.

"Both Fenton and Joe are great matches," Dr. Takahara began. "I’m going to tell you the reason why I believe..."

"I’m giving Frank my kidney." Joe stated, arms crossed defying anyone to argue with him.

"Joe, I should do it," Fenton began, "What if something happens to your remaining kidney? You’re young. You’re constantly putting your life on the line. God forbid, but something is more likely to happen to you than to me."

"Not true," the blond youth argued, "You are doing the same job with the same risks, so that argument doesn’t wash, Dad! Besides, the fact that I’m young is better. It means my kidneys are young, too."

"If you gentlemen will let me finish," Dr. Talkahara smiled at the two men, "Joe is right. Even thought you are both compatible, the closer the donor is to Frank’s chronological age, the better." Joe smiled triumphantly.

"I’d like to get Joe admitted and start the preparations as soon as possible, but since Joe is a minor, Mr. Hardy, I’ll need your signature on all the paperwork," the doctor stated. Joe glanced expectedly at his father and Fenton just smiled. He glanced at his wife who gave an approving nod.

"I guess it’s a go, then," Fenton replied, then he grabbed Joe in a bear hug, "I’m extremely proud of you Son. Not just for what you’re doing now, but for everything you’ve done for your brother and our family these past several days."

Fenton, Laura and Gertrude Hardy entered the quiet hospital room and looked at the two teenagers sleeping soundly on the beds. Both were connected to IV lines and their fluids were being closely monitored. It had been 24 hours since the surgery and, so far, both boys were doing exceptionally well.

"Come ladies," Fenton said, taking the arm of his wife and his sister, "I’ll treat you to lunch while the boy’s are still asleep." The trio headed for the hospital cafeteria.

A few minutes later, Frank Hardy opened his eyes. He looked immediately to the bed next to his. His younger brother was just stirring. Frank felt tears filling his eyes as he thought about all Joe had done for him. Joe turned and looked at Frank. His blue eyes were bright and he smiled.

"Do you feel as crummy as I do right now?" Joe asked, wincing as he tried to turn toward Frank.

"Yeah," Frank returned Joe’s smile. Frank became serious; "I’ll never be able to pay you back for all you’ve done..."

"Pay me back?" Joe stared at his brother. "Frank, you are constantly bailing me out of messes and you’ve saved my life more times than I can count! I owe you my life. Consider my kidney as a down-payment!"

The brothers laughed, but then groaned in pain. "I never knew laughing could hurt so much!" Frank quipped.

"Me either!" Joe agreed. The two boys looked at each other and grinned, knowing their lives were more bonded than ever.
