CHAPTER 20

In the seedy motel room outside of Bayport, the man picked up the cell-phone. He punched in a familiar number and listened as it rang on the other end.

"It’s all in motion," he said into the receiver. "I was able to inject the kid’s juice yesterday. The first batch I drugged was only half a dose, ‘cause the juice container was almost empty. I heard him ask his mother for more the day before. It was a great idea to bug their house."

"Has there been a reaction to the drug?" asked the voice on the phone.

"It’s slow working until it gets into your system." the man in the motel room replied, "His brother had to bring him home from school yesterday ‘cause he passed out. I was afraid they would catch me in the house, but the kid went right to sleep and the younger one left."

"Good," said the voice on the other end of the conversation, "I believe it’s time to start. Keep an eye on the house and keep listening to what’s going on there."

"Will Joseph Hardy please report to the main office immediately!" came an announcement over the P. A. system at Bayport High. Joe Hardy was in the library rewriting the research paper that had gotten ruined the day before. He glanced at the P. A. speaker and frowned. ‘What could this be about?’ Joe wondered as he made his way to the monitor’s desk.

"Mrs. Glenn, I’ve been called to the office. Do I need a hall pass?" Joe asked. She wrote out a pass and handed it to Joe. He retrieved his books and went out the door and down the stairs to the main office. As he passed the door of the school, he noticed an ambulance in front of the school. Joe’s heart leaped into his throat as he suddenly knew this all had to do with Frank. He raced into the office.

"Where’s my brother? Where’s Frank?" Joe asked the secretary, feeling panic rising inside him. Phil Cohen was suddenly at his side. "Phil, what’s going on?"

"Frank passed out again," Phil began, "He started feeling sick in POD. The nurse decided to call an ambulance since she couldn’t reach your parents. I told her to have you paged on the P. A."

"Where is Frank now?" Joe asked anxiously.

"They are loading him on the stretcher to take him to the hospital," Phil replied. Just then, two ambulance attendants came down the hall, pushing a gurney that bore a very still and very pale Frank Hardy.

"Frank!" Joe ran to his brother’s side, "Frank, hang on Big Brother!" Frank heard his brother’s anxious voice. He tried to open his eyes but it was no use. He was so very tired.

"I’ll drive you to the hospital. Let’s take your van," Phil offered, taking Joe’s arm. Joe nodded numbly, handing his key ring to Phil. ‘What’s happening to Frank? Wasn’t he fine this morning?’ Joe’s mind raced with unanswered questions.

They reached the emergency room just as Frank was being wheeled inside. Joe ran to Frank’s side but was stopped by a nurse.

"You can’t go with him," she said gently, leading Joe to the waiting area. "If you’re family, maybe you can fill out these forms?" Joe nodded and she handed him a clipboard with several papers attached. Phil caught up with Joe and took the clipboard from his hand, seeing the tears filling Joe’s eyes.

"He’ll be okay, Joe," Phil said, putting an arm around Joe’s shoulder, "It’s probably a virus or something."

"I’ve got to call my parents," Joe said in a whisper. He walked to the pay phones in the corner of the waiting room. He dialed the number of his father’s cell-phone. He told his dad what was going on. Fenton Hardy promised to get hold of Laura Hardy and they would be there as soon as possible.

Less than 30 minutes later, Mr. and Mrs. Hardy walked into the emergency waiting room to find Joe pacing anxiously and Phil chewing nervously on his finger nails. Joe went to his parents and fell into their arms. Mr. and Mrs. Hardy embraced their son and they both walked Joe to a chair in the waiting room.

"What’s going on with Frank?" A distraught Fenton Hardy asked Joe. Joe told his parents every detail, repeating the events of the previous day.

Just then, their family doctor walked into the waiting room. He made his way to the family and pulled up a chair in front of them. Phil Cohen cautiously came nearer and Joe gave him a small smile, waving him to join them.

"I just happened to be here making rounds when Frank was brought in," Dr. Bates began, "I’m really quite puzzled by Frank’s condition. He looked terrible when he arrived and he still seems tired. I’m running tests and we’ll get the lab work done as quickly as possible. In the mean time, I’d like to keep him here until we know what we’re dealing with."

"Is he going to be alright?" Fenton asked.

"Let’s wait and see what the tests say first," stated the doctor cautiously, "Personally, I don’t feel like this is something life-threatening."

"Can we see him?" Joe questioned. Dr. Bates smiled at Joe, knowing the impetuous younger Hardy very well.

"Yes, as if I could keep you from him," the doctor said, addressing Joe. "But, please, let him sleep. Don’t wake him." The Hardys and Phil made their way to the elevator and went to Frank’s room. Frank was lying very still, but his coloring was good and he seemed to be sleeping comfortably.

Joe stepped up to Frank and squeezed his older brother’s hand. Laura and Fenton moved to the head of the bed, where Mrs. Hardy gently kissed Frank’s forehead. "He doesn’t have a fever, Fenton. If this is a virus, why doesn’t he have a fever?"

"I’m no doctor, though it does seem strange," Fenton agreed. "Usually, the body fights off a virus, causing a fever."

A little while later, Dr. Bates came into the room. "I thought you might still be here," the doctor said, his face showing deep concern, "Frank’s blood test just came up from the lab. There is some kind of toxin in his bloodstream. The problem is, we don’t recognize it at all."
