“Whoa!” Biff Hooper exclaimed.
“Is that creep Gallo in jail?” “Yes,” Frank answered.
“He was a janitor at the museum, but he was working for someone
who was a ‘Baby Broker.’” “Baby Broker?” Chet wrinkled his nose.
“What’s that?” “They’re people who steal other people’s babies…”
Frank stated. “Or children,” Joe interjected, not wanting to be thought
of as a baby. “Right,” Frank smiled at his brother.
“Or children, and sell them to people who can’t have kids.” “Like adoption?” Biff asked. Joe shook his head. “Adopted
kids are usually orphans. I
was no orphan.” “So, you never got to see the sights?” Chet asked,
changing the subject. “Only the one Smithsonian museum,” Frank replied.
“But that’s okay. I’m
sure I’ll get there someday.” *
* * Less
than a month later, Joe sat at the desk in his room and looked through
all the brochures his father had given him about Disney World in His
eyes lit up as he gazed at the pictures of Joe
heard Frank go into the bathroom that separated their bedrooms.
He bit his lower lip and stared at the closed bathroom door for
several minutes. Joe
gathered all the brochures and quickly shoved them into the drawer of his
desk. He closed the drawer
and smiled. *
* * Early
the next morning, the Hardy family gathered for breakfast. “Well
Joe,” Fenton Hardy smiled at his blond boy, “Are we still going to
Disney World for your tenth birthday next week?” Joe
looked up from his scrambled eggs and toast.
He glanced at the faces around the table as they all looked
expectantly towards him. Joe
bit his lip. He had dreamed
of going to Disney World for years. It
would be an awesome way to spend his birthday. “That
would be really great Dad,” Joe said with a smile.
“But there’s someplace else I’d rather go.” Fenton
raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Really?” “Yes,
Sir,” the blue-eyed boy answered. “If
it’s just the same to you, could we go to Washington, D. C.?” Fenton
exchanged a bewildered look with his wife, Laura.
They both turned to look at Frank. “Joe,”
Frank shook his head slowly, “you don’t have to go to “No,”
Joe grinned, “I really want to go to Frank
swallowed. He had the best
little brother in the world. “There’s
only one thing,” Joe said seriously, “I definitely don’t want to see any of the Smithsonian museums again!” THE END
