THE CHAPTERS
PREFACE:
Frank
Hardy and his year younger brother, Joe sat at the table with their
friends, Chet Morton and Biff Hooper.
They were making plans for Frank’s birthday party the following
day.
“It’s
supposed to be warm, so maybe we can play outside for a while,” Frank
suggested. It was fall and
the dark-haired boy would turn eleven on the eighth of October.
“Yeah,”
grinned Chet, “then we can come inside for cake and ice cream!”
Nine-year-old
Joe laughed, “Auntie made two cakes, Chet; one double chocolate for you
and a chocolate chip for the rest of us!”
Chet
liked to eat and took the ribbing with a chuckle.
The others joined him.
“At
least we’re home this year,” Frank stated as the laughter died.
“Yeah,”
Joe agreed, exchanging a glance with his brother.
“That’s
right,” Biff said, rubbing his chin.
“You guys went away last year for Frank’s birthday, but you
never told us about that trip.”
Frank
looked at Joe. His younger
brother shrugged his shoulders.
“You
want to hear about it?” Joe asked.
“Yeah,”
chorused Chet and Biff.
“Alright,”
Joe smiled, “but it won’t be what you expect.”
