Preface: Wow! What an assignment this is! My eleventh-grade English teacher, Mr. Strayer and my World History teacher, Mr. Rimes got together and cooked up this peachy idea. The assignment is this: to write a historical composition about our own family. We can write it as a document or in story form. A historical composition! Can you believe it? Needless to say, I am not thrilled. I really don’t know a lot of our family’s history. Both Mom and Dad’s parents passed away while I was quite young. I don’t remember my mom’s parents at all. I was only a year old when they both died in a car accident. I was a little older when my dad’s parents died. I remember Pap and Nana (my dad’s parents) very clearly. We always had a lot of fun at their house. I remember the year Nana got sick. It was the same year I met my cousin Monica for the first time. Hm-m…now there’s a piece of family history. Maybe I can write about that. It’ll take some research, which I’m used to doing. Frank, my older brother by a year, and I are detectives. Technically, I suppose we’re “amateur detectives”, since we’re not old enough to be licensed. We work on a lot of cases though; sometimes with our dad and sometimes on our own. Our dad, Fenton Hardy is a detective and I guess Frank and I are just ‘chips off the old block’, as they say. Anyway, where was I going with that? Oh, research! Sometimes we have to do a lot of research on our cases. Definitely not the most exciting part of being a detective! This assignment is due in two weeks so I better get started. I’m glad Dad’s working locally ‘cause I’ll need to ask him a lot of questions. I’ll have to contact some other relatives, too. Okay, Hardy! No more procrastinating; time to start this composition. I think I’ll write it like a story…a little more creative that way. Here goes nothing! Hey, wish me luck, or better yet, wish me an “A”! -Joe Hardy
Joe Hardy English Comp. Class assignment Family History Composition Franklin Warren Hardy sat in his easy chair, reading the Sunday paper. No, that wasn’t correct. He had been reading the paper, but now found his mind wandering.
He could hear his wife, Esther Mae bustling about in the kitchen. He glanced at his watch. It would be several hours before the kids arrived, but you couldn’t tell Esther that. Laying the paper aside, he walked to the mantle…
